Stunning situation set overlooking beautiful farmland.
An ideal place for our family reunion holiday. Spacious, well-equipped and comfortable with beautiful outdoor spaces both in and out of the property. Local walks, bike rides, swimming and eating al fresco made this a very special place to be. We even saw the hunt surrounding us early one morning.
A couple of quibbles: although the website states free wifi, there is none so expect to use up your data allowance on 3G. Also bring a hairdryer if you use one as this was also not to be found. Only minor inconveniences to an otherwise superb holiday.
It is always extremely gratifying when a guest agrees with us that la Brousse is indeed a special place with stunning views.
We are surprised that you could not find the hair dryer, which can be found in the chest of drawers in the main bedroom.
A beautiful house and lovely location
The setting and comfort of the house makes it very difficult to tear yourself away. There are two terraces so you can have breakfast watching the sun rise or pre-dinner drinks watching it set. Take binoculars so you can fully appreciate the bird life and wildlife that surrounds the house. The owners have thought of, and provided, everything to enhance your stay; plenty of high quality sun chairs and loungers and pool equipment. There is a BBQ on the west facing terrace but the kitchen is large and fully equipped.
The bedrooms are all beautifully furnished and so peaceful that you will probably sleep late but then that will set you up for lunch in one the restaurants that are recommended. The lounge and dining room are very spacious with spectacular oak beams - take care when dancing!
There are some delightful villages and towns nearby: we loved Brantome, Aubterre Sur Dronne and of course Villebois Lavalette. We made good use of the walking guides and visitor guides provided and could have gone further afield had the delights of the house not kept calling us back.
Perfect, tranquil, rural retreat
My wife and I, plus our 3 older kids, had a relaxed, peaceful week at La Brousse - the house, the pool, the food, the weather and surrounding area were all superb. The accommodation was well presented and spotless clean on arrival. The 2 upstairs balconies were perfectly laid out for meals in the sun or in the shade, depending on the time of day, with countryside views. We visited many of the numerous small villages round about, in search of Boulangeries and Restaurants - always a pleasure, on the quiet country roads. The locals were always freindly and open, despite our poor French-speaking skills!. Richard, the owner was also prompt and helpfull in all communications. All in all, a very enjoyable experience.
Full marks for a 1st class property
We have now visited La Brousse four times in consecutive years and love it. It has everything you need for a great holiday.
Are you looking for a holiday property in a quiet rural location, yet within easy reach of beautiful countryside, fields of flowers, fascinating and ancient towns and cities and which has a pool for those long hot summer days? Then, La Brousse may be just the property you are looking for. La Brousse is convenient for all the low cost routes from the UK into France with flights to Bordeaux, Bergerac, Limoge, or the TGV to Angouleme. The nearest small towns and villages are Vendoire, Verteillac, Gurat and St Martial Viveyrol
La Brousse is one of three individually owned properties forming a horseshoe on the sides of what was once a farmyard. All properties were once barns and have been tastefully and cleverly converted into living accommodation. Character has been preserved with many open beams, terracotta roofs, two wells in the grounds and an open baking oven.
There is a swimming pool shared between the three properties. A sensible list of rules is available covering all the usual things such as the pool alarm, keeping children under supervision, no glass in the vicinity etc. The pool is well tended and clean and something of suntrap. Loungers are available along with a parasol both at the pool and also at the house itself, where they can be used on the balcony. Flotation aids and inflatables are available for those who need them. Whilst the pool is shared we have never found it to be busy and often have had sole use of it.
Parking for vehicles is available in the grounds and the rear garden. All mod cons are provided including a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave as well as a full hob (bottle gas) and electric oven. Plenty of continental socket adaptors are available if needed. The main supermarket is ‘Super U’ at Villebois Lavalette about 15 mins by car. Alternatively La Clerc and Aldi are in RIberac about 25 mins by car
Nearby, Gurat has a lovely church with modern stained glass. Verteillac has several eateries and bars and is a thriving village with a lovely square. L’ecole is a great place to eat locally at Vendoire and The Perigord and Le Calice offer eating options in Verteillac. For special occasions the Le Mas de Montet Hotel and Restaurant in Petit Bersac and the Moulin de la Roc near Brantome or the Moulin de L’Abbaye in Brantome itself are all to be recommended.
Lovely old building full of charm
The property is in a beautiful location with stunning views. A brilliant Fully equipped kitchen for all your catering needs.
If you love peace and quite and love the open countryside this is the place for you and of course the added bonus of a swimming pool on site. Yes we would recommend this property, the perfect get away from it all destination.
La Brousse offers a superb location; far enough away from bustling towns to allow you to appreciate the peace and tranquillity of its hillside views, yet near enough to local amenities to make life practical during your stay. Situated on the Charentes/Dordogne (Perigord Vert) border, it offers the opportunity to explore the variety of the area.
The quiet country roads are ideal for cycling to the local hamlets of Champagne, Gurat, Vendoire and beyond, to enjoy the ever changing rural landscape, including the poppy lined roadsides in late spring or the sunflower fields in full bloom in July/August. The local countryside also offers many tranquil way marked walks.
Vendoire is a 5 minute drive away and can be recommended for it's local restaurant (L'Ecole). The nearest town is Villebois-Lavalette (15 min) with its covered market square, cobbled streets, 17th century Chateau and medieval church, whose imposing spire can be seen from afar. The Lavalette restaurant, which overlooks the market square, enjoys a well deserved reputation for its creative cuisine using local produce. The town also has a supermarket with a particularly good fresh fish counter.
Further afield in opposite directions (20 min) lie the towns of Aubeterre and Riberac, both offering canoeing enthusiasts a scenic passage along the River Dronne. Riberac hosts an extremely popular market each Friday. Aubeterre is a picturesque small town offering cafes, restaurants and medieval churches, one famously hewn into an underground grotto.
The historic larger town of Angouleme (30 min) is built on a hill, providing extensive views from its Esplanade. It has a wide range of shops and restaurants a mixture of wide avenues and squares, and narrow back streets. Les Halles is a covered food market: try the oysters. It has a station with TGV connections to Bordeaux and Paris.
The beautiful Brantome (40m) is well worth a visit; built on a river lined with grottos and abbeys it is an ideal spot to have lunch and take in the atmosphere. The well-known towns of Bergerac and Cognac are only an hour away and, once again, are wonderful places to visit even if you are not intending to tour the local vineyards and taste the local wines (a temptation hard to resist). Day trips to St. Emilion, Perigueux and Bordeaux itself are all very feasible, depending on the pace that you are seeking.
