Portland is famous for its beer and this two-story Brewmaster’s Cottage is right on theme. The super quiet and private location is midway between the University of Portland and “downtown” St Johns, Portland’s newest up-and- coming neighborhood.
The owners have dedicated their lives and careers to beer. They are passionate about beer, its history and ingredients. They met through beer, each brewed a unique beer for their wedding, and designed this half-size home to express their creativity the way they love best; through beer.
You’re in for a treat once you pass through the Cottage’s hidden gate. The paved front patio greets you with a mosaic of whimsical, mismatched mirrors. Above the blue front door, you notice the beer-themed stained glass window, one of eight beer-themed stained glass windows handmade by the Brewmaster owners. Inside you’re welcomed by a mini-grand foyer with tiny crystal chandelier, checkerboard tiles, and corbel archway with hand-painted green hop finial. Down the hallway, you spy three glowing green hop pendant lights.
You’ll love cooking in the cozy kitchen, fully equipped with a gas stove and oven, dishwasher, microwave, disposal, and soda fountain milkshake blender. The large window lets in plenty of light, and the subway tile and custom cobalt and green hop tiles of the backsplash keep it bright. Breakfast couldn’t be better sitting on stools at the wide peninsula countertop. Turn around and notice the lighted box shelves and cobalt blue glass collection over the big living room windows.
Later, grab your beer and relax in one of two cozy recliners in the bright cobalt blue and yellow living room. Plan your Portland adventure with a Portland or Pacific Northwest guidebook from the amply supplied bookcase. There’s a whole shelf of beer books to learn about beer styles or chart your course to any of Portland’s 105+ breweries. Use the flat screen TV on the desk as a monitor for your laptop with the included HDMI cable and stay in touch with friends using the free WiFi..
Explore the tiny “secret garden” through the sliding doors with its blue bottles, glass fruit, mismatched mirrors and beer signs. Find the mini bocce ball set for a quick game outside, or grab a board game from the bookshelf for a cozy evening inside. Learn about beer history in the downstairs bathroom; the walls are pages from the Comic Book of Beer.
Step out of your shower in either of the two full bathrooms onto heated tile floors. The downstairs bath doubles as a laundry center with stacked washer-dryer and built-in ironing board.
Include your friends in your stay - the Brewmaster’s Cottage sleeps four adults. Leave your laptop on the desk and fold out the hidden Murphy-desk queen bed downstairs. The entire second floor is a spacious king-bed master suite with walk-in closet and double sink bath with tub/shower. Set the bedroom mood by dimming the lights on the gorgeous beer and barrel photo-canvas. In the morning, enjoy your coffee while rocking in the rustic snowshoe chairs on the sunrise view deck off the master bedroom.
The Brewmaster’s Cottage is a Portland beer destination on its own and is the place to stay when exploring Portland’s frequent beer festivals and beer events. All are only a bike, bus or taxi ride away. Ride the paved Peninsula Crossing Trail a half block away on the two provided bicycles. Fancy a walk instead? You’re just over a mile from Portland’s most scenic bridge with great views of downtown Portland, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams and Mt. Saint Helens. Prefer a hike? Cross the bridge and stride onto Ridge Trail, one of 22 gateways into Forest Park, the largest urban wilderness inside city limits. About 20 feet up the trail, remember to turn around for the best photographic view of the St. Johns Bridge.
