Susan Sparks and John Anderson
About Susan Sparks and John Anderson
John and Susan love the Pacific Northwest. Where else can you mountain bike, kayak, run trails, ride horses, golf, and fish all within 20 minutes of where you live? John grew up in the Tri-Cities. After leaving the Army, he moved to this area to pursue degrees in computer engineering and business. Susan grew up in a tiny town in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of northern California. She moved up to Snohomish County after earning her graduate degree in speech pathology. She is fortunate to work in pediatrics as a home care therapist. Although John commutes to Microsoft every day, they still spend lots of time outdoors, either working on the property or just enjoying this unique part of the country.
Susan Sparks and John Anderson purchased this House in 2004
Why Susan Sparks and John Anderson chose Monroe
We wanted to live close enough to Bellevue and Seattle for John to pursue his career in computer science. Yet we have horses and dogs and so needed a large piece of land. We also needed two houses so that my parents could live on the property with us. We also wanted room to garden. And, we wanted privacy and trees. Oh, and enough space so that we could bike and horseback ride without having to drive anywhere. Knowing that it would be almost impossible to find all of this in one property, we were stunned when we found Rooftop Aerie. It was perfect. And the view took our breath away! Over the years, family and friends have shared some of the most important events of their life here. So, in 2016, the Rooftop was completely remodeled in order to offer it as a wedding venue. However, due to a number of factors, we chose instead to create a unique, private, spacious vacation retreat. We want to share this spectacular property with others and hope that you enjoy it as much as we do.
What makes this House unique
Rooftop Aerie feels like a mountain retreat and yet it is close enough to the city to allow you to take advantage of all of the events and amenities that the area has to offer. We have horses, dogs, cats, and a mini donkey living on the property. Visiting wildlife include: many deer, wild rabbits, eagles, hawks, owls, a bobcat, a cougar (neighbors post sightings) and a local bear (but the property is fenced, so the bear is only spotted outside the perimeter :) We also have, of course, many honey bees, hummingbirds, and wild birds. Please know that this IS a farming community, so you can hear duck, sheep and chickens in the early morning.

Home Away From Home
We cannot say enough about our stay at Rooftop Aerie. This home is all as it is described and then some. We had 3 couples staying in the home and we had plenty of room to spread out as well as be together. It was one of the most relaxing places we have ever stayed. The views are spectacular, the home is very comfortable and the setting of farm life leaves you feeling so relaxed. John and Susan are so very accommodating and made us feel right at home. Of course their sweet dog, Sparrow, was also very welcoming. We all look forward to our next stay at Rooftop Aerie!
Welcoming hosts; a comfortable home; beautiful views! The kitchen is well-supplied with spices. Bed was just right. Space is perfect- we hosted family members for a dinner here and it was great for 6 of us. Location is an easy drive to Snohomish, grocery stores and restaurants. We picked up pumpkins at nearby Bob's Corn. We are grateful for the experience and highly recommend this as a country retreat!
We thoroughly enjoyed are stay at the property. The owners went out of there way to accommodate our group with a few special requests. I would recommend this place 100%.
Wow!!! What an amazing property! Susan and John are the best! So friendly and accommodating!
We enjoyed this property and hope to return! What a great experience! The views are stunning, hummingbirds and bird watching, their dog, Sparrow, became a part of our family!!! The boys loved her and she made their stay memorable!! She is a sweet border collie and very obedient and courteous. Susan even took the boys to see the horse and donkey too! They are the best hosts!! The house, kitchen and bathrooms were well stocked and full of amenities and super clean! Gas grill, space heaters, wine drinking on the porch, the roof top views and space were just beautiful!! Very comfortable and nicely furnished. We couldn’t have asked for more! Thank you Susan, John & Sparrow! We hope you will have us back again!
The property is nestled in a setting of rolling hills, farmland and ranch-style settlements. The gated driveway entrance secures privacy and security. The rooftop provides solitude and a peaceful space for daily devotionals/reflection and a connection to the earth, nature's beauty and bounty. Our family of five had ample living space, the girls loved the room with the twin beds and trundle. It created the perfect sleepover when their cousin stayed with us. The master bedroom with it's own bath created the perfect "in-law" space. There was wifi that we could connect to and run all of our devices during "downtime", and the perfect view of the night sky out of the living room windows. The kitchen already had condiments, coffee and a water cooler. Our first night, the owners treated us to one of a 2-for-1 Jet City Pizza deal - Jet City extra cheese rocks, especially for breakfast! We absolutely fell in love with the owner's border collie, and we often sat out on the beautifully landscaped grounds with her playing fetch. The hummingbirds could be seen going to their feeders - I had never seen them so close before - beautiful! On our last night outside we could see a hot air balloon making it's way over the trees in the distance. We were about 30 minutes from Seattle, Kirkland, Snohomish and we loved exploring - so much Washington, so little time!
Great family vacation!
Stayed here for a family vacation with our 6 and 4 year old. Loved the peace and quiet! The house has everything you might want and then some. We enjoyed watching the hummingbirds over morning coffee and while grilling in the evening. We had a few family members come from Seattle, and Susan & John were so accommodating. Monroe proper is not that far and has many nice restaurants & grocery stores. We will definitely stay again if we are in the area!
