Comfortable and relaxing retreat in an historic and picturesque setting
The Blue Door Cottage was just what my friend and I needed for the last week of our visit to the UK. The cottage is charming, comfortable, and well-appointed, and we were able to slow down, relax, and feel at home for a week (with our own separate bedrooms). We didn't have a car and found we didn't need one. The cottage is centrally located for walking around the village of Porthlevan, enjoying the harbour, beach, sunset off the pier, and local pubs and restaurants, and within easy access to coastal walking paths and local buses to neighbouring villages (we arrived via train to Penzance then bus to Porthlevan, and found it was very easy to do day-trips to Marazion and St. Michel's Mount, St. Ives, Helston, etc by bus from Porthlevan). The only way we could have improved on our stay was to stay another week!
We have in the past, been so disappointed with other cottages, in Cornwall with other letting companies and individuals, but this was just blissfully wonderful, exactly how a cottage rental should be.
From the moment we arrived it felt like home, Phil is a fantastic owner and laid on a cream tea and wine, after taking time to explain everything quite late in the day, we just stood and looked at each other and could belive How wonderful it was.
Then to find one of the most comfortable beds, this was heaven.
This is a perfect location for solitude and quiet, parking a bit hit n miss, and certainly not for unfit people.
The cottage was fantastically equipped with absolutely everything you need, kitchen was wonderful and we cooked a few times again with a well equipped.
The outside provided a peaceful place for a nice glass of chilled wine.
It's easy to reach the shops and harbour, albeit a steep hill there n back, but the benefits easily out way this.
Porthleven has some very fine eating. And drinking places after a hard day on the beach, notably Sea Breeze at the bottom of the hill, just fantastic but book.
I could rave on about the cottage the owner and porthleven as not had a blissful holiday like this in years, and definitely will be going back.
Thanks again Phil.

Fabulous hidden gem in Cornwall
We had a lovely stay at this wonderful little cottage during the summer holidays. Tucked away down a side street, we were removed from all the noise and bustle of the waterfront while being only a 500m walk from the harbour/beach and all amenities/shops when we did want to join in the action.
The cottage was very well equipped and we were greeted with flowers, wine and light-as-a-feather scones, complete with jam and clotted cream, on our arrival. Phil was an extremely attentive host without being at all obtrusive and he could not have been more helpful, even sending on things we had left behind!
The cottage is only small, but the décor cleverly makes the most of the space and the cottage is light and airy. Wooden floors are a bonus too when returning with sandy feet from the beach!
We loved Porthleven which reminded us of Doc Martin's Port Isaac; quaint and full of character. We were particularly thrilled to discover a Rick Stein seafood restaurant on the harbour-front!
All in all, a lovely stay.
On arriving at the blue door cottage my wife and I were met by Phil Whitehorne who showed us around the house. The house itself was very clean and had everything we would need in place for our weeks stay including good bottle of wine in the fridge. Unfortunately I found the 2 x 2 seater settees rather uncomfortable and the stairs were steep.
All cooking utensils were clean and available in a well laid out kitchen off the sitting room if eating in was on the menu.
The cottage itself is set about 30 meters in from the road in a quiet location and 5 minutes or so from a fairly quiet harbor where one can watch the world go round.
There are a number of restaurants at the harbor but I suggest the local pubs such as the Harbor Inn or The Ship Inn where you can get very good meals and drinks at a reasonable price.
I have given our stay at the blue door cottage 4 stars. Would I stay at the blue door cottage again, yes.
Blue Door Cottage
The cottage had everything and was clean and tidy. The village was beautiful and friendly. We could live in Portleven happily whatever time of year.
