About Patricia Szot and Craig Sanders
My husband and I currently live in the Seattle area. We recently purchased this home as a vacation getaway. We have visited the Big Island many times and fell in love with the area and the island.
Patricia Szot and Craig Sanders purchased this House in 2018
What makes this House unique
I fell in love with the house because of the huge screened-in lanai and the large back yard with all sorts of flowers and fruit trees. I can sit all day long on the lanai enjoying the ocean breeze and the sound of waves crashing into the shore, or the the rain falling onto the roof. At night there is the added pleasure of hearing the coque frogs. The location of Kaloli Point allows safe walking around the area and easy access to coastal water for bird- or whale-watching. The coastline is entirely public so that one can walk along the rocks as far as they can without encroaching on private property.

Plenty of room in this house for our family of six! Had a great time in nice quiet neighborhood!
Enjoyed short walk to beautiful views of ocean in friendly neighborhood. Patti and Craig were easy to communicate with and provided very helpful information on making the most out of your experience in the area. Would definitely stay here again.
It was a pleasure working with you too. Look forward to your next visit.
A great home base for exploring the east side of Hawaii!!
Two families shared this house and loved it! The house comfortable, cute and spacious — we especially loved hanging out on the lanai, listening to the birds and the tree frogs and enjoying the constant breeze.
So glad you enjoyed your stay.
House was adorable and fun
Showed up and house and the cleanliness was not as one would expect. I felt it could have been cleaner. Towels had a sour smell to them. We sure wanted A/C from the moment we walked in until we checked out. This is our first time and are unsure if this is the high temperature season or abnormally hot??? So please take that remark with a grain of salt.
Now we have the negative out of the way there are positive things about this place. Loved the deck in the evenings. Very peaceful with minimal traffic. Close to the ocean. House well stocked for cooking, laundry, and relaxing. Beautiful landscape and plenty of birds to listen to. I like the rain so when here it rained almost every evening. All and all it was a good base station for our first Hawaii excursion. Thank you for inviting us to your home.
Glad to hear you did enjoy Melemele house as your first vacation to Hawaii and found the house pleasant to stay in. Please keep in mind for future visits that you are in the tropics in the summer time, this is the hottest part of the year with the long days and short nights. The VRBO listing specifically indicates there is no AC, but then very few homes and some hotels on the island actually have AC. The homes in Hawaii have lanais because they are typically the coolest areas. Sorry that you didn't find the house clean enough.
though you didn't specify what wasn't clean. The wet hot climate of the tropics may result in a musty smell to the towels.
Relaxing getaway at a great house
We had such a great trip to the Big Island, made so much better with the central location and amenities of Melemele house.
We wanted to see everything manageable in a 7 day vacation, and were able to check nearly everything off our list! Having the full kitchen let us cook breakfast and pack snacks for our daily adventures. The screened in lanai was very relaxing and cool in the evenings. It was very handy having a washer/dryer in the house. We really appreciated the house's beach gear (we used the beach towels and beach chairs).
When we return to the Big Island, we will definitely fit our schedules around this house's availability. A week was just not enough time to see the whole island!
Mahalo Jen and Matt,
So glad you had a great time. You are always welcome back.
Had a great time at the MeleMele house!
Thanks for the wonderful stay at the MeleMele house. This was our first trip to Hilo and this home was about 20 minutes to downtown Hilo. No big deal though, most places on the big Island take some time to get to. We arrived at night and were greeted by the sounds of Coqui Frogs. Arrival was smooth, the kitchen was well stocked and it had everything we needed for cooking. Thanks for the gifts on arrival! The house was clean, warm and welcoming. As I mentioned, this is the rainforest so we did encounter bugs on the lanai but they were of the harmless slow variety. Lot's of fruit trees in the backyard and large toads roaming about. It's 1 1/2 blocks from the water but the swells were high and crashing into the volcanic rock. Beaches can be found elsewhere.
Snorkeling gear is provided as are beach chairs.
If you have a chance the hike to shipman's beach is rewarding although it's not great for kids as it's muddy, long, and mosquito-ey.
The upstairs jacuzzi was a little challenging for some. There were detailed instructions for operating but the spout only seemed to extend about a foot.
So glad you had a wonderful time for your first time to Hawaii. The Big Island has so much to offer.
Thank you for your suggestions with the jacuzzi in the master bathroom, will put information in the booklet on how to deal with the issue. The hose comes out quite a bit but sometimes it gets twisted and you have to untwist it by turning the head around some. Since the cord is under the tub it is hard to know that it is twisted.
A wonderful time in the Melemele House
Thank you for everything this home was filled with all the info you needed to go visit in Hilo Hawaii and restaurants. He home was very well maintained and had many many extras anyone could ever ask for. We enjoyed staying here and we recommend this home to our friends and family. The locals were so friendly.Great experience. Thank you for the great vacation. Sincerely Irma Sanchez Mahalo
So glad you had a wonderful time. You are always welcome back.
Kaloli Point is located along the coast in Hawaii Paradise Park (HPP). Shipman Beach is the closest beach (about 0.8 mile from the house) with a 2.5 mile easy hike to a sandy beach that is protected from ocean waves. A great spot for children. For some of the best snorkeling in the area go to Kapoho Tidepools (21 miles away). Hilo also has several wonderful beaches for swimming and snorkeling/scuba diving (Carlsmith and Richardson beach). For relaxing there is Ahalanui Hot springs (down the road from Kopoho Tide pools). The Hilo side of the Big Island is where the volcanic activity can be seen. Check out the lava flow from Pu'u O'o crater or head to Volcano National Park. Helicopter rides to the lava flow are also available at the Hilo airport.
