About Kimberly Ficklin
Our home is a labor of love! We love to host and having a space where we can do that makes our life incredibly happy! We have been married for 12 years, we have 2 adult daughters and 2 grandchildren. We have been using vacation rentals for over a decade and decided that we would enjoy hosting for other people.

Ideal home base
We packed a lot of activities and site seeing into our 5 days in Portland. This place was great for the two of us. Kimberly communicated regularly with me before the trip and also touched base with me during our stay.
Pros: Comfortable beds, big living space, and everything you could possibly need in the kitchen. I particularly liked the coffee/tea cart which held many teas and a nice coffee maker. Kimberly keeps a basket of toiletries and medicine you may have forgotten in the kitchen and anything in it costs $1. When I discovered that I left my fingernail file at home, I found a fingernail file in there. The decor was also very nice. The shower had great pressure and plenty of hot water. I felt safe and the location of this place was perfect for us. It is a good neighborhood to walk around in and get some fresh Portland air.
Cons: This is the bottom floor (basement?) of a 2.5 story house and we could hear the people upstairs talking (muffled), the television, and walking around. The people above us weren't being rowdy or even very loud, but is was a distracting detail for us. It was also disappointing to not be able to use the fireplace as that would have been nice on our nights at "home." The bathroom is small with only a shower. This was fine for the two of us, but might be cramped with kids. Guests do not have control of the thermostat, which is set at 68 degrees.
Overall a nice, comfortable place to rest up for the next busy day.
Thank you for the wonderful review Cara. We appreciate the feedback as we believe honest reviews help allow future guests to truly find the perfect place for their stay.
That being said, we’d like to clear a few things up for our potential future guests. As stated in the VRBO listing: this is the lower level of a split level home, we live upstairs, there is a potential for noise. Unfortunately, the fireplace isn't listed as an amenity on VRBO. The thermostat is upstairs (with us) and in the winter we do keep it at 68 but as stated in the space, please ask us to change the temperature while you are here if the temperature is unacceptable. I can change in in an instant (I also have a Smart thermostat, so I can change it no matter where I am!) We want your stay to be 100% comfortable!
Located in Quiet Neighborhood, Excellent Get Away for Families with Extra Amenities!
Daughter, Son-in-Law, and Grand-daughters, age 3 and 13 months celebrating early Christmas gathering. Downstairs "Suite" was perfect with Kimberly (Host/Homeowner) providing coffee and tea as unexpected treat, including non-dairy creamer. Also, a basket of "necessities," such as toothbrush, and tooth paste, a for nominal $1.00 per item, was such a great idea!
Thank you for a wonderful holiday family experience! Christmas came early, making the season bright and 2019 a year with which to look forward!
Thank you, Kimberly! We really enjoyed hearing the babies down there enjoying their visit! Have a wonderful holiday!
Better then a hotel
We ready enjoyed staying here. We travel a lot with my husband’s job and stay in hotels. However, we wanted to try homeaway to have the opportunity to cook our own meals and have more space. We are so glad we did. We have 3 children ages 5,3,and 1 and they loved the space. They had toys, movies, books and games to keep us entertained. The place was clean and beautiful. The Ficklin’s gave us our space. We would stay here again and recommend this place to our friends and family.
Thank you for the wonderful review. We enjoyed hearing the kids down there playing and laughing. I'm so happy that you had enough things to keep them occupied. We look forward to your next visit.
Very nice getaway spot
We had a great time during our stay at Mt. Scott Suite. The location was not far from Powell Butte, which was one of our reasons for coming from Arizona. We also visited Multnomah Falls, the Tillamook Creamery, and Canon Beach. The bed we slept on was very comfortable. Facility was clean and well appointed and the host was extremely accommodating and helpful.
Thank you for the wonderful review, Lyle. We enjoyed hosting you and look forward to your return visit.
Everything was perfect
Great hosts. Exceeded expectations.
Thanks for the wonderful review, Greg. We enjoyed hosting you and Jenny!
A family-friendly haven
Me, my husband, and our two kids stayed here for two nights during a stressful time (moving out of state). It was a relief to walk in to the space and find that every detail had been given care by the owners. From interesting decor without much clutter for our two little terrors to destroy, to a "dollar store" of toiletries on top of the fridge, the owners had done a great job.
The two potential challenges I would note for the owners and future guests:
1) The space was quite cold (basement apartment, AC shared with main house above, we visited in the summer). The owners are aware of it and encouraged us to open windows if we were cold. I just wish we had thought to open all the windows the first night because man it was cold! I don't know if closing vents is practical but if it is that could be an improvement.
2) This is a bit of a top 10% of the 1st-world problem, but my husband and I sleep in a king bed at home so queen beds always seem a little small when we travel.
Regardless of those issues, I really can't justify rating this any less than 5 stars because it was super awesome. There were toys and plastic dishes for the kids and a very nice outdoor space as well.
Thank you for the wonderful review, Alex. We really do love what we do and are so happy when our guests can feel the love and care we give. We very much enjoyed hosting your family!
I apologize about the coldness of the downstairs, its hard to get it completely right, each guest is a bit different in their preferences of heat vs. cold but we want you to be 100% comfortable during your stay! I so wish you would have let me know while you were here, I would never want you to be uncomfortable and we could have made a change to the thermostat. Again, apologizes for the cold night.
