Our lovely 5-star graded, 2-bedroom 'Balfour Apartment' is within Pilrig House - an A-listed, 17th-century Scottish townhouse (built in 1638), which has a distinguished history and a wonderful literary connection with Robert Louis Stevenson - it was his mother's family's home. RLS, as a child, visited and played in the gardens here - he mentions Pilrig House in many of his novels and letters, eg Kidnapped and Catriona.

An Enviably Peaceful Park Location

Pilrig House is uniquely located in a tranquil park, yet it is only a short stroll or 5 minutes by bus to Edinburgh's city centre and all the main attractions. We hope this reassures you as to the authenticity of all the reviews you read. On our own website, you can also read in excess of another 150 independent guest reviews, and view some typical comments left in the apartment's Guestbook.

About Debbie or Philip Martin

Readers, we liked it so much we got married here - here we are several years and several pounds on...

Philip is a retired mechanical engineer, who travelled the world as a naval engineer for many years - living in Mexico & Belize for periods of time. He is an amateur historian & has amazing local & Scottish historical knowledge. I am an ex-copy editor who worked for over 20 years in the field of publishing, & then on a freelance basis as an editor/proofreader. We both enjoy travel, books, films &, life in general. We decided, after meeting, that we couldn't bear to sell Philip's apartment in Pilrig House - it was just so special, & so we decided to turn it into a rental apartment. A year later, with great joy, we moved back into the house ourselves, then we purchased another apartment for renovation and rental, and so it just grew over the years since we started up. We have made many great friends, and still gain enormous joy and satisfaction in welcoming visitors here from around the world. It is also lovely that so many people come back time and time again.

Our emphasis, right from the start, was to create incredibly clean & exceptionally comfortable, accommodation, with in excess of the usual facilities found in vacation rentals – & to maintain this high standard. We also wanted to ensure we met our guests’ needs, and so listened to our visitors and took on board, almost without exception, all comments and suggestions over the years. We always personally offer a warm welcome, and are really pleased to be able to provide further support your stay, if it is wanted! On arrival, we take you into the apartment, showing you all the need-to-know things, and will always take as long as you want to answer all your questions – it is nice to meet the owner & to know we are on-hand should you need us & not worry that you are dealing with an anonymous third party.

Why Debbie or Philip Martin chose Edinburgh

Well - there's the fact the Pilrig House is utterly unique as an historic 17th-century townhouse in Edinburgh, then there's the lovely location, and the parkland and Edinburgh skyline views... And the peace! Then, there's the wonderful ambiance in the house itself - it really is special. And, the private parking, the beautiful gardens... there is so much to enjoy about living here. We just couldn't replicate what Pilrig House offers if we searched the length and breadth of Edinburgh. And the fact that we can walk into the centre of Edinburgh in 15 mins, or take a bus right outside the park... more than anything, we love the feeling of living in the country while living in the city.

And, the centre of Edinburgh is under a mile away – most guests walk there, and sometimes take a bus home at the end of the day… and describe their pleasure at returning to the peace and tranquillity of Pilrig House. Great shops are almost on your doorstep – supermarkets, cafes, bars, restaurants…all within easy walking distance.

In each apartment, the living-rooms & bedrooms have park and/or garden views – a lovely change from looking out onto city streets or other buildings! The house’s history also gives it a special feel – some people liken it to staying in a Scottish castle… Robert Louis Stevenson’s mother lived in Pilrig House and he visited here often as a child – we include his novels in all three apartments, so you can read extracts that refer to Pilrig House, and imagine living in another time… One national newspaper journalist wrote after staying here that the house has a ‘timelessness’ that made for instant relaxation….

We have many US & Canadian guests who come back every year, & European guests who visit at least 6 times per year – and they have stayed previously in the best hotels and now choose to stay here… Our Guestbook comments and reviews on all independent sites have been 100% positive - hopefully reassuring you of what you will find when you come to stay.

What makes this apartment unique

All of the above! We awaken to birdsong, can gaze out our windows and see the park in all seasons in all its beauty, or sit in the garden to the side of the house in total privacy and enjoy the tranquillity, and read a book... We often walk down to the Port of Leith, where there are great restaurants right on the waterfront, and grab a bite to eat. Everything we need is close-by - shops, transport links, restaurants, Edinburgh's main train station... and, there are beautiful drives to the East Lothian countryside and coastal trail, including some charming villages and historic castles - within a half-hour's drive. There are also 22 stunning golf-courses along this coastline, eg Gullane, North Berwick, Craigielaw, Muirfield - for golf fans!

Another great bonus is the fact that we can offer guests free parking in a private car park directly to the rear of the property – this is incredibly rare in Edinburgh – most properties have ‘metered’ parking on a street outside their property, which never guarantees a space, and is incredibly expensive – it means you have to top up the metre every couple of hours!

Philip and I often walk to the ‘Shore’ area of Leith, on the waterfront – which is Edinburgh’s port – a 5-10 minute walk from Pilrig House – it has great restaurants and bistros. You can also use your membership card to visit the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s ‘The Vaults’ premises here – even if you don’t like whisky – a great place to have a bar lunch in the oldest building in Leith.

Our stay at Pilrig House, Edinburgh

  • 5 of 5

I treated my daughter and my niece to a trip to Scotland. We decided to stay at Pilrig House. Our hostess Debbie was amazing. We felt like we were staying in a castle and Debbie was our fairy godmother. She helped us before we arrived with tons of valuable information to plan our trip. Once we arrived she showed us to our room where we were greeted with a bouquet of roses, Champagne, birthday cake with candles and a card to help my daughter celebrate her birthday. We did not expect this and were so amazed at the kindness shown to us. The entire apartment was beautifully decorated, clean as a whistle and stocked with so many goodies and extras we felt like royalty. There were cute little knick knacks every where we looked from the stoic little penguin that guarded the bathroom door to the awesome towels on our beds that were shaped into eloquent swans. Every possible thing we could need or desire was there at our finger tips or a phone call away. We were in a safe and centrally located area near a gorgeous park and cute little shops and restaurants. Debbie gave us many tips on great places to eat and shops and she made sure we had easy to follow directions to get around town. At nights we would come home from a day of sightseeing or shopping and have a huge selection of DVD's to watch or books to read or games to play. There were no glitches with the internet or phone connections while we were there. Debbie also introduced us to Mike McKinlay who we hired to pick us up from the airport and take us to our destination and to take us on day trips to the Highlands and Inverness and to view Stirling Castle and all the surrounding villages and towns. He was absolutely amazing. His historical knowledge of Scotland and his witty, hilarious sense of humor made every trip we took a fun adventure. He was a complete gentleman and a safe and punctual driver. We hope to come back to Scotland because with the help of Debbie and Mike we all fell in love with this beautiful country. We would never stay anywhere else but Pilrig House or use any other driving service but Mike McKinlay. They made our dream trip to Scotland a once in a lifetime trip of fantastic memories. We give them both the absolute highest of ratings and to be honest I am very persnickety about hotels and VRBO homes. There is usually something that isn't quite up to par with them but not so with the Pilrig House. We all loved it and felt very catered to and spoiled. Thanks!

A beautiful apartment in Edinburgh with the most gracious and kind host.

  • 5 of 5

Words do not justice for the incredible experience by my family and I had staying at the Pilrig House in early June of this year. Upon arrival, Deb gave us a tour of our apartment. We were stunned. Every expectation was exceeded. We had a fruit, a stocked coffee and tea area and elegant toiletries waiting for us. Also, at our disposal was tour maps, bus routes and information on many sites of Edinburgh. My girls and I loved the swan towels arrangement on our bed and the white fluffy robes and slippers. Needless to say, every morning after our showers we walked around in luxury. Deb graciously took me to to super market for food just after our tour. Just WOW!! A couple of morning, we would be ready to leave to tour Edinburgh and would stop to chat with Phillip. He offered to take us to our site and provided a unique personal view of the city from a local. We were provided a connection to a personal driver, Mike who we toured with for 2 days around the Highland (I had to get my Outlander fix). Lastly, the view out our window was of Pilrig Park. Every morning, I would sit at the window looking at the people and dogs walking the part. This is truly missed. My entire family was sad to leave but we are so thankful we choose to stay at the wonderful place and meet Deb, Phillip and Mike. Much love from the Sawyer's

Lovely, comfortable flat in beautiful Edinburgh park setting

  • 5 of 5

Philip and Debbie were the most amazing hosts, from personal greeting and orientation, to assistance during our stay with any questions or requests for directions. The flat is beautifully decorated, comfortable, with many nicer than home touches, and overlooks a quiet and spacious park with window seats perfect for watching the life in the park, after a day of touring around. It is near two bus stops, and it is very convenient to take buses, if you don't want to hire a car. This is a most amazing place to stay, and we feel lucky we were able to fit into their rental schedule. We definitely recommend this vacation home, and hope to return to visit again! Thanks for our best experience yet!

Absolute Perfection

  • 5 of 5

If it were possible to give the Pilrig House more than 5 stars, we would. We have travelled, extensively throughout the world, renting houses and apartments, and have never been as pleased and impressed as we were with the accommodations and hosts as we were with the Pilrig House. The only negative is that we think that our future lodgings will pale in comparison to the Pilrig House. The apartment was spotlessly clean, furnished beautifully and fully equipped to meet every possible need. The location was perfect, too. It was outside of the city, in a park, and within walking distance to all of the main attractions in Edinburgh. A large supermarket and good restaurants are just a few blocks away. Debbie and Philip were warm, friendly and helpful. Philip offered to drive us to different places during our stay and had great stories to share about Edinburgh’s history.

We could list all of the supplies that were available in our apartment, but all we need to say is that it had every possible item anyone would ever need!

We loved our visit to Edinburgh and will always remember it as one of our best trips.

Can't recommend highly enough

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Balfour apartment for a week in July so that we could visit Edinburgh and also travel to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The apartment was brilliant - beautifully furnished and equipped with everything you could possibly want. The location was fantastic - situated in the middle of Pilrig Park, so you wouldn't know that you were a few minutes away from the city centre and Leith. Everywhere was within a short bus ride or longer walk.

Philip and Debbie were great hosts and very helpful in suggesting things to do and places to eat.

All the family had a brilliant time and would love to revisit. We would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh
