Why Alison Cosier chose Arco Da Calheta
We fell in love with the Quinta at first sight. The previous owner had renovated the old stone house in keeping with the typical Madeiran style, retaining the original charm. We added the large patio area, pool, outside kitchen, sun room leading to the covered dining area, and wi-fi in all rooms and our own style of decoration. The Quinta is our family home in Madeira where we feel part of the village and local community, who are warm and friendly. It is ideally situated for a relaxing holiday and for touring the island, it's just a five minute drive to the sandy beach and harbour at Calheta with a choice of bars, restaurants and the local supermarket.
What makes this Villa unique
The Quinta is a charming Madeira stone family house full of character, offering great views, decorated with antiques and vintage finds, a wood burner in the sitting room takes the chill off cooler winter evenings. With the addition of a large patio area, swimming pool that can also be heated in winter for an extra fee, and outside kitchen barbeque surrounded by lush tropical gardens full of bird song. A great mix of contemporary and traditional. The mountain, village and sea views are stunning. One of the added bonuses of the house is the small banana farm and vegetable patch, which is tended by Joao, the husband of our housekeeper Rosa. We love picking fruit and veg for the table, it's one of the things we love most about staying here, fresh seasonal fruit and veg is also available to guests though the farm and vegetable area are out of bounds, Joao will keep the kitchen stocked up. The top bedroom has a large patio with great views and a table for four, a perfect spot for coffee in the morning or a romantic evening setting. The porch by the patio provides a covered dining area with a large hand made chestnut table using wood and craftsmen on the island, the perfect spot for relaxing day or evening. Calheta beach is just five minutes drive away. It's in the sunniest part of the island, and a perfect base for exploring the whole of beautiful Madeira at any time of year.

The gorgeous house, brilliant pool, amazing views and tranquillity of the surroundings – all comes together here to create that relaxing feeling and unforgettable memories.
The villa is situated in a nice place surrounded by hills with beautiful views of the village and nearby ocean. It is 5 minute drive away from sandy beach of Calheta, with a couple of restaurants, a good grocery shop, and a marina where you can book a dolphin watching tour. No problems reaching Funchal or north of the island by car, but when using GPS make sure to remember the ‘next turn’ as the signal is sometimes lost in the vast amount of tunnels. Though road signs are very good and easy to follow.
The house itself is very cosy, nicely decorated and clean. The pool is bigger than we imagined from the photos, plenty of room for family of 4 to have much fun. There is a place to park your car behind the secure gates. The road nearby is not busy, so we have spent a lot of time relaxing outside in this tranquil environment.
Alison, the owner, was very helpful and always answered any questions we had lightning quick. I would highly recommend the villa.
Can’t wait to return ! Thanks
First class -very comfortable.
Enjoyable, peaceful family holiday.
We enjoyed a week here with our 4 year old, 14year old and 17 year old children. The property has good views of the sea and is a drive away from restaurants etc. There is a small supermarket and snack bar at the top of a steep hill which can be walked but we preferred to get in the car and head to the beach. The nearest beach and harbour area (5 min drive) has a great park for the kids and a few nice restaurants to choose from. We found it fairly easy to access anywhere south of the island by car. The property itself has a wonderful swimming pool and gardens as well as a lovely outdoor kitchen / bbq and seating area. The property was clean and well stocked. The top floor double enjoying a balcony with great views. Alison (the owner) couldn't have been more accommodating and communication was excellent.
Highly recommend if you are looking for a week away from it all.

A lovely, well equipped villa in a quiet location.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful location. It's only a 5 minute drive to Calheta and close to many other villages on the South coast of Madeira. I would strongly recommend this villa for a peaceful holiday with family and friends. Thank you Alison and Graham!

Perfect for a family holiday.
We've had an amazing holiday at this Quinta, which is in a wonderful situation. The house itself is well-equipped and beautifully kept whilst the ozone pool was a delight for everyone. We ate out on the terrace every day and our "tweenie" loved his own space/balcony up high. We can't recommend this place enough and hope to return. Thank you for helping to make amazing family memories.
Thank you Jen for taking the time to write a review, it was great to meet you after all our emails. We're delighted to hear that you all had a perfect family holiday at the Quinta, and enjoyed everything Madeira has to offer. That's what our villa and Madeira is all about, fun family holidays that create life time memories. You're more than welcome to return, we look forward to seeing you soon.
All the very best,
Alison and Graham
Great place to relax
The house is an upside down house, with the bedrooms on the first and second floor and sitting room down stairs. The property is well equipped and the real selling point is the outside space. There is a covered patio area where we had breakfast outside each morning - not bad for early march. There are then loungers spread around the pool. The garden is sheltered and we got sun most of the day.
The property is well situated, with easy access to the main highway, although a bit out of the village so not easy to walk into the village.
Glad you enjoyed the spring weather, it has been gorgeous here this past few weeks. The patio certainly is a spectacular space to enjoy relaxing in all types of weather now we have the covered seating area. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay on the north side of the island.
All the best,
Alison and Graham
Our Quinta is located in a village on the sunniest part of the island, the perfect base for exploring, a car is necessary to capture all the charms this beautiful island has to offer. If you fancy lunch or dinner, Calheta beach and harbour is just a five minute drive away with bars and restaurants. There is a sports centre with gym facilities and playground five minutes up the road, where they also have a bar serving coffee, beer, snacks and cold drinks. At Calheta harbour there is also fishing and whale/dolphin watching trips, two large hotels with restaurants, bars and a spa, a large supermarket and a sandy man made beach plus numerous restaurants and bars selling local and international dishes. A little further up the road is a stunning modern museum and art gallery, Casa Das Mudas. You can pick up levada walks close to the house or take a walk on the country roads and enjoy the local scenery including mountains and coastal roads. The island has a wealth of beautiful levada walks, stunning mountain and coastal scenery to explore, with different flora and fauna in the varying micro climates found on the island.. Guided tours are available of the more rugged parts of the island, details at the Quinta. The Quinta is a 30 minute drive from Funchal, the bustling cosmopolitan capital with cobbled streets, a huge choice of restaurants, bars, shops and museums. Golf is available at Palheiro above Funchal and also at Santo do Serra near the airport, there are tennis courts in Arco. You can do paragliding from the top of the mountain in Arco, near the bar Costa Verde, or just sit on the patio by the pool watching them gliding on the thermals over the village. There is a small supermarket in Loreto selling basics and more, a small village shop selling fruit and vegetables, a pharmacy in Arco plus another little supermarket, bakery, hairdressers, post office, a couple of bars and a lovely old church.
