It had potential
Let me preface this by saying I've stayed in VRBOs in Montana, Oregon, Corsica, Costa Rica & now, France. I feel like it is a great alternative to staying in hotels. I will usually look for a good VRBO before resorting to a hotel for our vacations.
Unfortunately, there were more bad things than good at this particular VRBO. The good thing is they can be easily remedied if the owner wishes to do so, but for our trip, it really made it a borderline miserable experience.
We came from Corsica by ferry and were scheduled to arrive in Toulon at 9:45 PM. The ferry didn't arrive until 11:30 PM. We met with local family (luckily they spoke good French) & went to the property with us. The caretaker, Kaki, was very rude to our family because of a misunderstanding regarding the deposit. I had tried on multiple occasions to reach the owner prior to arriving to discuss the deposit but received no reply. So, eventually we were able to stay and get settled (on the property we already paid for.)
The owner originally stated that linens (yes, even sheets for the bed!) were available for rental after I'd committed to staying in the VRBO. I explained that the VRBO site stated explicitly that linens were provided. He said since I was coming from an American site, he would go ahead and provide those. This by itself would have automatically made me check this property off my list had I known in advance.
But, now we were there. Paid the rent and deposit. We get there and realize there are no hand towels, no bath towels, the heat is not adjustable at the home (there were high temperatures in the 60s & 70s F. 19-21 celcius), & no soap. There were 2 half-rolls of toilet paper. We rented the VRBO for 6 days for 4 people.
I called the owner who said towels aren't provided contrary to what was stated on the VRBO site and he could adjust the temperature for us, but we could not adjust it there. He said we could use sheets as towels.
So, we had to buy 4 towels and find room for them in our luggage back to the United States.
Overall, this was the low point of our 2 week trip to Corsica and France.
Good: location, large double-gated home
Bad: Most will need to rent sheets
No towels, hand towels
No soap & minimal TP
Owner unresponsive to emails after we arrived - had to call to get heat on. Rude caretaker
Temp adjustable by owner, hot water takes ~5 mins to get lukewarm
I don't expect luxury at a VRBO but things like soap, towels, TP, & heat are must-haves.
