About this property

Historic Royal Hawaiian Estates

Designed by Donald Wexler and Richard Harrison in 1961, this two bedroom two bath unit has been lovingly and thoughtfully curated in every detail. Surround yourself in the whimsy of a mid-century modern tiki theme that will not disappoint. You will find walls of glass in every room that open up onto large private patio with views of the San Jacinto Mountains. There are two pools on site as well as a centrally located spa.

Royal Hawaiian Estates is a 40-unit complex comprised of 12 separate buildings on five acres. Designed by the architecture firm of Wexler & Harrison in 1960, the complex blends the modernist aesthetic with Polynesian architectural detailing (including "tiki apexes" and "flying sevens"). With the help of the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation the complex became the city of Palm Springs' first residential historic district in 2010.

Extremely disappointing
A very disappointing stay. Pros: Good location – close to biking, hiking, restaurants and downtown Palm Springs Cons: So many; I would like to point out that we never spoke or dealt with the owners of this unit. They use a property management company that when I called for the issues below, told me if I didn’t like it here, I should leave. Issues: Washing machine is old, difficult to put soap into dispenser. Flooded the kitchen first day, plumber called and fixed Dish washer does not clean dishes at all. We hand washed dishes for 3 months. Property management refused to fix it. Dryer is old, burns the clothes so not too usable. Fridge is one you have to defrost – this definitely should have been disclosed on vrbo. Every week we had to empty the fridge and defrost the mounds of ice from fridge and freezer. Oven/stove is old – burners don’t all work at all heat levels. Oven burns everything – no matter what the bottom of whatever you’re cooking/baking is burnt. Kitchen table fell apart 3x – legs fell off while we were using it. We fixed the screws/bolts each time. Tiny ant problem on the kitchen counters. Never did figure out where they were coming from Sliding glass doors are a struggle to open. We lubricated the tracks of the sliding doors several times and it did help – but still not easy to do. Shower floor in master is a mess – really needs repair. Outdoor couch is broken and very stained and dirty. Not usable. Unfortunate as the outdoor space is so nice. 2nd bedroom has a giant wooden crib in it. No room for a table or desk to work from, which we needed. Property management refused to move it. Kitchen is very ill equipped. We had to buy a lot of things or borrow from friends. It was impossible to entertain here because of lack of things to cook/serve/eat with. Not even a salad bowl, ladle or a kettle! All in all, this was a huge disappointment. The pictures make it look nice and in fact there is a lot that is nice to look at. But it is like a museum – nice to look at but not to live in for 3 months. There is so much clutter everywhere that we had nowhere to put our own things. The surfaces are covered in knick knacks etc. But, this review might not even be here if the property manager or agent had addressed our concerns.
