The town of Fontainebleau is located southwest of the department of Seine-et-Marne and covers 17,205 hectares. It is the largest municipality in the Île-de-France region, and is almost entirely covered by a forest that also extends to a few neighboring municipalities (25,000 hectares in total). This forest is for the Parisians a place to walk but its rugged terrain and its many rocks also make it a place known for the sport of climbing. The agglomeration of Melun is located at the northern limit of the forest, and northwest is Barbizon, a village famous for the many pre-impressionist painters who lived there. Various areas of the forest are covered with silica (quartz) in its raw state.
