About Judy Schuman
I'm a woman of a certain age who moved here from LA where I lived in a canyon so I never saw a sunset or the light at the end of the day. I built on a property that overlooks the ocean and shore, with wondrous sunsets every night. I like to grow things, so have planted all sorts of fruit trees, flowers and vegetables, which I share with guests (as well as with an occasional wild pig) and also sell at the farmers markets. I enjoy meeting people from all over both at the markets and the rental..
Why Judy Schuman chose Kailua Kona
For the above reasons. I live on the property in a separate structure, so the rental is quite private. The closest house to this property is about 100' away. Because I am on the property, I act as a sort of concierge, with tips and suggestions.
What makes this Apartment unique
I bought this land and built to take advantage of the vast ocean views and since there is a protected dryland forest just below the property, no one can ever build there. Being at the end of the road, there is no traffic and the noisiest thing is the morning birds. Because I like open spaces, I didn't put in a wall to make this a one bedroom apartment so there is about 700' square feet of space. Looking out from the bedroom, living and dining areas there are wonderful ocean views. There is also a private garden for hanging out.

Beautiful and Peaceful Property
We stayed for a week at this beautiful property and it was so peaceful and serene. It met all of our needs and was well stocked. Judy was a great host. She met us when we arrived with a welcome basket filled with fruits grown on her property. She respected our privacy; but, was available if there was a question or something that we needed. She made sure we had information regarding the island and ocean conditions. We will definitely go back when we visit the Island again. Thank you Judy for your hospitality and sharing your beautiful space.
This is a beautiful retreat from the hustle amd bustle of the tourists in town.
A spacious apartment on the edge of a forest reserve. Waking up to a cacaphony of tropical birds and having breakfast on the lanai is wonderful! Judy the host is very gracious and has a wealth of knowledge on the area. She is a walking guide book and is more than willing to share with you which makes planning your activities much easier. The kitchen is well equipped and had everything we needed. The view, the trees, flowers and the birds are beautiful. We had a great stay and Judy made us very welcome and comfortable! The welcome basket after a long trip to get here was a very nice touch. If you want to get away from the main tourist hotel area, this is a peaceful and private alternative. Wish we could stay longer!! Thank you Judy for sharing your wonderful property with us!
Good place priced right
Would love to give 5 stars but did not because of a few shortcomings that may not be an issue to others; the kitchen uses plug in appliances (no stove top or oven) and the kitchen is only on one circuit. So if your cooking toast, making coffee, using the hot plate unit and the refrigerator is running, you’ll trip a breaker. We did cook breakfast several times, just had to be mindful of appliance timing. The kitchen is well stocked with a variety of appliances.
The new couch had a hump along the back of the seat cushion so was only useful for our stuff, not bottoms.
We spent most of our sitting time on the lanai watching the wildlife and sunsets. Lovely! Used the bed for reading and other couch type lounging.
It’s a good location at the end of a road boardering conservation land at about 1200’ elevation. Great spot to watch feral pig families, parrots eating seeds from the giant Neem tree off the lanai and to watch a variety of birds and fowl. Resident Kilij Pheasants roam the grounds. Judy has a wild orchard of fruit trees and we enjoyed a fantastic Pomelo from one of her trees, as well as a couple of the oranges. As we were leaving she asked if we had picked all of the pomelo from her tree. That was a bit awkward and quite surprising. Apparently someone did at some point during our stay.
Judy was otherwise a very gracious host and for the $ her ohana is a great option for two people.
Aloha Kings,
Mahalo for your visit.
Sorry about that bumpy couch. It turns out that when the new cleaning man closed the sleeper he also put in the thick quilt. Without the quilt it's fine.
As for the fruit, I in no way was accusing you of taking it all. For one thing,, you asked about taking a grapefruit, not a pomelo. Either and/or all would have been okay. When I went into the orchard there were no more grapefruit on the tree.
Since I've been suffering the consequences of 4-legged and 2-legged pigs (not unlike other growers), I need to know whether or not it's time for a pig hunter.
I apologize if you feel you were accused.
Feels Like Home
We stayed at Judy's condo for 16 nights in October 2017. From the start we were greeted like long lost friends. Being from downunder (Aussies) we were especially touched when Judy wore her Koala jewellery. Judy's hospitality never faltered throughout our stay and included delicious local fruits, shopping, tourist guidance and culminated with a Thai banquet she lovingly prepared for us. The condo had everything we could wish for, including comfy bed and lounge, generous kitchen facilities and a wonderful lanai to enjoy the ambience and views. We left knowing that we had met a kindred spirit in Judy and will always hold these memories close to our heart.
Amazing stay on the Big Island!
We stayed for a week in Judy's studio apartment and were beyond pleased with the accommodations. Judy welcomed us personally and gave us an overview of the area, and offered local restaurant and entertainment recommendations. She checked in on us several times and even brought us some freshly baked bread that she sells at a local farmer's market. We loved our week on the Big Island and can't wait to get back! Thank you Judy!
Great view, Peace and .Quiet
Judy is a great host and the apartment, which is compleatley separate from the main house, is fully equipped. Bath robes, outdoor grill, coffee maker, full fridge, veranda, very comy bed, rolling cooler, snorkeling equipment, beach towels and a welcome basket with some of Judy's home grown fruit. There was everything we needed. Watch the birds in the morning or sunset in the evening, there is no other property between you and the coastline. Higher elevations for comfortable sleeping tempatures. Ten minutes by the upper road into Kona town and you will avoid the work they are doing on the Queen K Highway. Will definitely return and recommend to others.
