Townhouse in Historic Eymet
We very much enjoyed our stay here, the house is very comfortable, convenient for walking to bars and restaurants. Should we decide to rent in Eymet again we would certainly try to re- book here and would certainly recommend the property without any hesitation.
Tim & Nicky
Really wonderful little house, comfortable beds, clean and very close to everything
We had a great time in Eymet, we travelled to visit other villages including Sarlat which was almost one hours drive away, but we were happiest back in Eymet with its great restaurants and little brocantes, I would use this base again.
Of our 3 months in France, the Ancienne Gendarmerie in Eymet was our lowlight.
This renovated Gendarmerie had it’s moments: comfortable & spacious downstairs; well equipped kitchen; TV (French channels) + DVD; good wifi. Upstairs were the main problems: a small double bed (I’m under 6ft, but my feet kept hitting the frame), but the worst issue was the old warped window shutters that didn’t close properly, so letting in the yellow street lights opposite each of the b'rooms. This was a nightmare until we could manage to hang towels across the window to exclude most of the glare - but reducing the airflow to cool the room. Sandra was kind enough to provide a couple of old fans.
Interestingly there was a sudden change of Property ID which proved concerning. We booked under ID 1111303ha and received the VRBO 'Access your Rental' email detailing property, access, info etc. When we tried to access this link 2 days before our stay, the link informed that our booking did not exist! Then checking the website for 1111303ha we found that it no longer existed! Were we victims of fraud? No, but we feel that any such changes should have been communicated, particularly with respect to the Access Your Rental link. We found the new ID was 1772969ha.
Also we noticed that we had been charged 100 GBP/wk more than that published. I queried this with Alan who said that we'd been charged “..the full price and the reduced price currently shown is in an effort to fill our empty weeks this season. To offer a discount for late booking is common practice in the holiday industry.” However 3 months on the 100 GBP lower price is still the published price for the 2016 peak season. It is not a reduced price!
Eymet itself is not your typical Perigordian village. The population is 50% English – retirees presumably enjoying the advantages of the strong English Pound – well good luck to them, but if you’re looking for real French village life, conversing in French, enjoying terrific French cooking, avoid Eymet.
On the plus side the countryside is simply magnificent: the vineyards with their superb chateaux, the bright yellow, smiling sunflowers, the corn fields and the golden straw coloured wheat fields. The Bergerac wines are fabulous. The Issigeac market is a cornucopia. And great rural walks.
Of course discovering all these wonderful sights & experiences for ourselves is part of the fun. But a folder with a few personal suggestions from the owners would be welcome, rather than a handful of generic Tourist Office brochures, just felt a bit cold & impersonal.
I was surprised to receive a disappointing review, prompted mainly I suspect by their dismay over the pricing structure. The 2015 season was difficult and prices were reduced to attract late bookings. As currently the 2016 season does not appear to be any better the prices have been kept low and offer excellent value for money.
The kitchen is fully equipped, as the reviewer acknowledged, and the double bed upstairs is a standard size double.
Eymet is popular with English tourists as it is a beautiful medieval town with a large choice of restaurants within 2 minutes walk of the house. Indeed the closest, La Cour d'Eymet, is included in the Michelin guide 2015.
Add to this the bustling weekly market, the night markets in July and August and the stunning countryside and you will find Eymet to be a perfect base for your stay.
