We love Gordon's Bay because it is really charming and low key. Walk to the beach, have breakfast or lunch by the sea, sleep it off and then braai, relax and swim if the weather permits. When the weather in Cape Town is good in summer, this is the one place you can swim in the sea without freezing (this was the number one reason we fell in love with the place).
There is the Steenbras hiking trail to Crystal Pools, but you need to get a permit, especially when it's high season. There are also plenty of stables in the area, for those who like horse riding.
Wine farms are aplenty (booking essential), most notably Idiom (a must visit for food lovers :), and Vergelegen Wine Estate, which is great for families and has two nice restaurants to choose from (Stables and Cafe Fleur).
Other interesting eateries include:
Pyjama and Jam eatery (in the industrial area, not what you’d expect - think it’s still first come, first serve, but call to ask - great for breakfast, cheese cake dessert)
HUSK (Recently opened, by the sea, casual)
Elgin Railway Market (definitely recommend - great for family and kids, lots of food to choose from)
Hickville Smokehouse - American style barbecue/ casual (booking necessary)
The Thirsty Oyster - local pub vibe with sea views, Gordon’s bay, by Bikini Beach, for fish, chip, salad combos)
