The Skagit Valley is a Mecca for bird lovers. People come from all over the world to observe the snow geese, trumpeter swans, eagles and migrating water fowl throughout the Fall, Winter and Spring season. Watch over 1,000 birds taking flight at once. It's exhilarating to watch the unique white snow birds take flight.

La Conner has many activities to draw tourists throughout the year. If you enjoy hiking, there are many parks and hiking trails nearby. Deception Pass is a mere 20 minute drive from La Conner, offering hiking trails, beaches, as well as spectacular scenery for painters and photographers. Stop by the oyster and shrimp stands for fresh seafood and visit one of the many scenic parks for a picnic lunch.

A short distance from La Conner is Anacortes which offers ferries to the San Juan Islands and Vancouver Island. There are lots restaurants, shops, hiking trails and parks to be discovered and explored.

A short drive from La Conner is Chuckanut Drive. This is one of the major spectacular drives in the United States. Wind your way along Farm to Market Road through the popular town of Bow-Edison. You will need to stop by the Bread Farm and grab cookies, cinnamon bread and Monster bread. Next door to them is the Slough Foods for salumi and cheese to take home for cocktail hour. About 15 minutes from Bow you will begin to wind along Chuckanut Drive. If you make this a day trip, stop for lunch at the Chuckanut Manor. Their crab and shrimp salad is fantastic and the view of the Samish Bay is lovely. Next door is Taylor Seafoods that ships the finest oysters worldwide. After your beautiful view drive on Chuckanut you will arrive in Fairhaven a lovely village of Bellingham. Home to Western Washington University and the Village Bookstore.

In March and April the fields are a riot of color with daffodils and tulips. There are events galore in La Conner, Mount Vernon, Anacortes and surrounding areas. This has been one of the most spectacular events for over 36 years. The tulip fields are scattered all over Skagit Valley as well as the many events and festivals. Our valley has the largest tulip fields outside of Holland.

Whale watching, fishing charters, Deception Pass tours, are a few of the water tours taken from La Conner, Anacortes (20 minutes from La Conner) and Bellingham (40 minute from La Conner).

Some of the best restaurants and chefs are in La Conner. For delicious French cuisine, try the Oyster and Thistle, a 3 minute walk from our house. Thomas Palmer, the owner, is a classically trained chef as well as his wife, Danielle. It offers a cozy bar and a broad selection of cocktails, beer, wine and outstanding cuisine.

A 5 minute walk from here, is The La Conner Brewery, excellent pub food with a wood fired pizza oven, great service and over 20 beers and ciders on tap, plus very good wine.

Across the street from the La Conner Brewery is Nell Thorn hosting farm to table food for over 20 years. It has indoor seating with a water view and outdoor seating plus a great bar. Food is outstanding.

Nearby on the water is Hellams Winery, one of four wine bars in town offering a broad selection of wines plus wine tastings every day. If weather permits sit on their patio, enjoy your wine and view the channel. A cheese, meat, fruit and cracker tray can be purchased as well as other light snacks Hellams also offers a selection of craft brews.

In town, there are two exceptional Mexican restaurants, a Polish restaurant, two fine breakfast places, three coffee shops, an old fashioned tavern and a large prime rib and seafood restaurant. There is a Thai restaurant and several places serving fish and chips. There are three shops specializing in ice cream. Seeds Bistro is a fine dining choice just as you enter town.

There is a terrific selection of women's clothing stores. There are art galleries, home furnishings, gift shops and a book store. There is even a cigar shop.

No two stores are alike. Each store carries unique items that you won't see elsewhere.

The marina is just a 10 minute walk from here, so if you come by boat, or have guests that are boating with you and need a place to stay, we are it!

Not only all of this, there is a grocery store, Pioneer Market, literally a five minute walk from our house.

Second stay as good as the first
Great place. Love the very well supplied kitchen. Location, view, layout are perfect for us. The driveway can be tricky, but once you are there you can pretty much walk to anywhere in La Conner. Host has been wonderful to work with. Will be returning again.

Perfectly beautiful!
This house was perfect for two couples. Cozy spaces to gather on the main floor with very private bedroom quarters on the bottom and top floors, each with their own private bathrooms. We wanted for nothing, in terms of supplies and furnishings. The location was excellent, allowing us to leave our cars at the residence and enjoying a short stroll to restaurants and shops We will be back!!!

Great home
This was a great place and looked exactly like the pictures. It has a great view of La Conner and behind the house is a walking trail (stairs) that leads to one of the main streets. As long as you have no mobility issues, this is a nice, safe home to stay in, in a perfect location. The beds were comfortable and the little nook by the fireplace was probably my favorite spot. It put off a lot of heat. The kitchen was fully stocked and the house itself was probably the cleanest I’ve stayed in on VRBO. There are a couple TVs and they each have streaming options, which was nice. It was too cold for us to use the patio/deck areas but I imagine in the summer they’re fantastic. The location was in easy walking distance to all the shops and restaurants downtown. We had a great time and would stay here again.

About the host

Hosted by Cherie Ware-Braley and Ron Braley

Host profile image
Cherie is the founder and a current owner of WE Trust Company, a Seattle fiduciary services company. She is currently the Board Chair while she explores retirement. Ron is a founder of a downtown Seattle law firm with which he is still affiliated but also is entering retirement retaining a focus on a very small number of long-time clients. Ron and Cherie were active boat owners for many years. Mooring their boat here brought them to La Conner. As they entered retirement, they chose to sell the boat to allow for more time to enjoy our home in La Conner as well as spend time in their home in Arizona, also a VRBO property, and to travel.

Why they chose this property

This property is their home. Because they spend as much as six months away from it, they wanted to extend it to others. It is modern and has modern amenities usually associated with luxury hotels at a price that is much less for just a room. They have a fully equipped kitchen for those who want to stay in. Their house is within a few minutes walking to a large choice of exceptional dining out experiences. It is cozy yet has a gorgeous view of water and mountains. Not many other VRBO properties offer all of this.

What makes this property unique

This location in La Conner is very close to lovely golf courses, an array of nice shops, several ski areas, boating and kayaking as well as the gateway to the San Juan Islands and Vancouver Island. It is two hours away from SeaTac airport but only sixty minutes from Everett's Paine Field, forty-five minutes from Bellingham's International Airport and less than two hours of no traffic from Vancouver's International Airport. While in the midst of an active small town, the house is remarkably quiet.
