Lattice House is a spectacular place, and I am happy to share it with our guests.

About Patricia (Pat) Williamson

My late husband and I purchased the property in 2000, and finished our retirement home in 2007. We loved the whole 3 year process of working with the Costa Rican and Balinese architects and designers and overseeing the building of our dream home. We originally planned to live there full-time, but that was before 15 grandchildren came along, and we decided to split time between Costa Rica and Houston/Galveston. Unfortunately, he did not live long after Lattice House was completed, and I decided to spend more time at my home in Galveston, near family and friends, and to share my home in Costa Rica with others who will love it as much as I do. I still get to spend about 3 months a year there--mostly in the summer when I can escape the Texas heat! I have wonderful friends there and treasure every minute I am there. We have wonderful times---hiking, swimming, boogie boarding, bird watching, and sharing wonder meals at home and in local restaurants. The picture is from a dinner at Lattice House on my trip last summer--me in the middle rear, surrounded by some of my closest Costa Rican friends who are fortunate to be full-timers and Michael McCoy, second from the right front, from Bali, who was the primary designer and who continues to send new furnishings. Since that picture, he has had made for me beautiful new coconut dining chairs. Lattice House and Reserva de Achiote are my love, and all the rental income goes to its upkeep and improvement.

Why Patricia (Pat) Williamson chose Puntarenas

My husband and I wanted to retire to the tropics and in the early 90's started looking in Costa Rica. We loved the idea that it was so democratic and had no army. The first place we visited in 1993 was Dominical, but at that time there was no paved road from Jaco, and we decided it was just too remote for our later years. We looked all over CR, and by the time we decided no place was as beautiful as the southern Pacific coast, the road had been paved to Quepos and there were a few crucial amenities. We spent 3 years looking at property and finally in 2000 found Achiote, the most beautiful, accessible, and private property in the area. I retired in 2005, and the next day we were on a plane to our paradise.

so fantastic it made me cry!

This is going to take awhile.....I have so much to say about this stunning property. Following the homeowners very specific directions, you come upon the driveway into the property and it looks hidden and non descript. You turn off the coastal road and enter the property through a simple gate.......then you're eyes start to buldge because you can't believe this is where you have come to stay. A beautiful upward curving manicured tropical drive is lined with palm trees. This goes on for a good half of a mile as you ascend the reserve-like (I think it is a reserve - 50 acers) property. Then you see the house. Wow. I said to myself, "All my hard work in finding the perfect house for the perfect family vacation (my parents included) and I DID IT!" The house is soooo perfect. The photos say it all. It should be in architectural digest (remember David Bowie's house in Bali - this is as close as you'll come to it without traveling over the pacific). The views are stunning and dramatic. This is a great location for a photo shoot. I am an architectural designer and this was nirvana! I took soooo many pictures and hope to put them up on this site if there is a way to share them. Stop your search, I have done it for you (40 hours of house hunting - no kidding!) This is the place for you! The house itself is peaceful and secluded. Several mornings I woke up early and hiked up behind the house into the ancient forest to discover tree frogs, monkeys and toucans The dining is great in the dominical area and grocery shopping is 10 mins down the road. The caretakers are very enthusiastic and a wealth of information. Dominical is the place to go because it is still the unspoiled true Costa Rica. This may be over the top as far as a review but when you have a vacation this great after putting in so much time and energy you feel like you've won the Oscar for travel planning.

The small print: I am in no way related to or knew the homeowners when I booked this house. I just loved it in the photos and made the contact!

Perfect locale for vacation with extended family

  • 5 of 5

Bowled over by the beauty of this reserve in 2012, we returned for 16 days in Jan-Feb 2017 to share it with our family members. Siblings and cousins joined us for the first week, and our children, an SO, and our 4 y/o grandson came for the second.

Lattice House proved again to be the perfect home base for exploring the many attractions of the South Pacific region of CR. There's something for all ages and interests within minutes of the reserve. We hiked to the on-site waterfall, rode horses on Playa Hermosa at sunset, visited Hacienda Baru nature preserve, picked our own grapefruit from the reserve's own orchard, snorkeled at Isla del Cano, whitewater rafted on the Sevegre River, walked out to Whale's Tail, shopped and body surfed at Dominical, and ended each day toasting our good fortune, either at nearby restaurants with sweeping views of the coastline, or right at home on our Lattice House deck.

Our biggest challenge was tearing ourselves away from the serenity and beauty of our lovely accommodations. It's hard to beat the grandeur of the view from the outdoor dining table where we ate most of our meals, four of which were prepared and served by master chef Alexandra and her husband Juan, who offered us delicious CR cuisine right at home.

Once again property manager Ana Montesino did a superb job helping with our activity planning, arranging transport from the airport, getting us a rental car, setting up laundry services, keeping everything at Lattice House in working order, and treating us like family. Our return to Lattice House was one of our best vacation experiences ever.

It's not often I am speechless...but this time I don't even know where to begin! From the first contact with Pat, the owner, this entire experience was effortless! This was our first trip to Costa Rica. We have two boys ages 9 & 11. I was a bit nervous to say the least coming to a foreign country and Central America...but Pat made everything easy, efficient and made us feel secure on every detail. Her manager Ana was also amazing. She arranged for us to be picked up from the airport which was key since the thought of us dealing with a rental car late at night and having a 3 hour drive on roads we are not familiar with was not very comforting. Our driver Mariano was also amazing, kind and so nice to my boys! We felt safe from the moment we arrived! Ana made arrangements for a rental car to be delivered to the property which was a huge benefit and luxury and had made arrangements for a cook to come and make us breakfast for the first morning until we could get to a store. The cook, Allesandra was also amazing. Greeted us with a smile, said hello to the children and then served us breakfast. What a treat and a wonderful way to start our vacation. I didn't have a care in the world!

The property! Just amazing! The road up to the house is when you realized you made the best decision EVER! Each day, we would come through the gate and my boys would roll down the car windows to hear the Monkeys, Toucans and pigs. It was better than any zoo you could go to! The house itself is just perfect! Oh, and the views!!! It was our own personal Jungle Shang-gri-La! We did some excursions (5 of the 10 days we were there), which was the perfect balance since we really wanted to just enjoy the property some days. We did Oso Canapy tour (zip line), Nauyaca Waterfall horseback riding, Alturas Animal rescue and Took a boat ride to Cano Island to snorkel....a MUST!!! I recommend to try and do it all...nothing was more than a 40 min car ride and great day trips. Time to come back to the house to watch the sunset, with a glass of wine and a dip in the pool! If there was a way I could give Lattice House 6 stars I would. In my opinion, there could not have been a better property for us and I would not change ONE thing during our 10 day trip. Just PERFECTION!!

Magnificent Property

This house is amazing, the views are indescribable. From the moment we entered the driveway, we were filled with awe. It has a magical feel to it and it will not disappoint. Ana, the house manager and the owner were most helpful and accommodating. I cannot sleep with out the noise of a boxed fan, and the owner went above and beyond meeting this need prior to our arrival. Ana coordinated all our tour reservations, gave us wonderful restaurant recommendations, and was so wonderfully kind and helpful. My kids loved the pool, the outdoor showers and searching for animals on the property. Take the hike to the waterfall on the property, it is so worth it!

You won't be disappointed!

Consider yourself lucky to have the opportunity of staying at Lattice House. The design, view and amenities are tip-top. Ana, the house manager, was great and provided an excellent introduction to the house as well as some great tips for places to eat and things to see. The owner, Patricia, was a pleasure to deal with and promptly responded to all of my emails.

There's lots to do in the area but our favorites were: horse back riding, zip lining, hiking, visiting the beaches, an inexpensive but excellent massage in Dominical and just hanging out at the house reading a book by the pool.

The area is not overly developed (no high-rise condos or hotels here!), has very good restaurants and places to stock up. Wildlife abounds.

We'll definitely be coming back!

Lattice House was a Costa Rica paradise!!

The Lattice Housd was AMAZING!! The house manager, Ana, was awesome! She arranged us transportation from and back to the San Jose airport for our 2 families, for a total of 8 people (kids ranged from 14-17 in age). She also arranged for us to have rental cars delivered to the house. (This is a must to get around the area and explore! - 4 WD is highly recommended for several places we went to.) The evening of our arrival, she meet us at the house and arranged for us to have dinner prepared (full course meal - and they cook an clean up!) by a local lady named Alexandria! She was amazing and it was very reasonably priced for what we got compared to cooking ourselves or going out to dinner!! Well worth it!! We had her come back 2-3 additional times!! One of the best things we did!!!

Ana showed us all around the house! It's gorgeous! The master suite was incredible! The other 3 bedrooms are very roomy and comfortable as well! There are 2 queen rooms and a room with 2 twins! Perfect for our families! All bedrooms were air conditioned! The kitchen was very nice and well stocked! The pool and back porch area is where we stayed the whole time if we were at the house! We ate most of our meals out there too! The infinity pool was incredible! Everyone loved it! The view to the ocean was amazing and breath taking! Couldn't get over it every morning how beautiful it was!!

The beaches are very close! Just down the driveway and a short distance down towards Uvita! But check out all the local beaches! They are incredible!! The property has several hiking trails and a waterfall and tons of wildlife!! We saw monkeys, birds, and tons of other stuff every morning! Our kids loved doing that more than hanging out at the beach! They loved exploring and hiking to waterfalls! But they loved the beach (whales tail especially) too! Plays Ventanas was very fun too! We also took a day to do Antonio Manuel national park! Go early and spend all day!!

Ana also arranged our 2 excursions. We did horseback riding to Nauyaca Waterfslls!! Along with the horseback riding adventure, we got a light breakfast and a full lunch!! The price was a bargain for everything we got on this experience! It was amazing!! Most of us climbed the waterfall and jumped off and swam in the water! It was very fun!! The guides assist with that as well! The other excursion was Osa Canopy Tours! It was incredible! We loved it!! This was by far one of the best vacations we've ever taken!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND
