About Patricia (Pat) Williamson

My late husband and I purchased the property in 2000, and finished our retirement home in 2007. We loved the whole 3 year process of working with the Costa Rican and Balinese architects and designers and overseeing the building of our dream home. We originally planned to live there full-time, but that was before 15 grandchildren came along, and we decided to split time between Costa Rica and Houston/Galveston. Unfortunately, he did not live long after Lattice House was completed, and I decided to spend more time at my home in Galveston, near family and friends, and to share my home in Costa Rica with others who will love it as much as I do. I still get to spend about 3 months a year there--mostly in the summer when I can escape the Texas heat! I have wonderful friends there and treasure every minute I am there. We have wonderful times---hiking, swimming, boogie boarding, bird watching, and sharing wonder meals at home and in local restaurants. The picture is from a dinner at Lattice House on my trip last summer--me in the middle rear, surrounded by some of my closest Costa Rican friends who are fortunate to be full-timers and Michael McCoy, second from the right front, from Bali, who was the primary designer and who continues to send new furnishings. Since that picture, he has had made for me beautiful new coconut dining chairs. Lattice House and Reserva de Achiote are my love, and all the rental income goes to its upkeep and improvement.

Why Patricia (Pat) Williamson chose Puntarenas

My husband and I wanted to retire to the tropics and in the early 90's started looking in Costa Rica. We loved the idea that it was so democratic and had no army. The first place we visited in 1993 was Dominical, but at that time there was no paved road from Jaco, and we decided it was just too remote for our later years. We looked all over CR, and by the time we decided no place was as beautiful as the southern Pacific coast, the road had been paved to Quepos and there were a few crucial amenities. We spent 3 years looking at property and finally in 2000 found Achiote, the most beautiful, accessible, and private property in the area. I retired in 2005, and the next day we were on a plane to our paradise.

so fantastic it made me cry!

This is going to take awhile.....I have so much to say about this stunning property. Following the homeowners very specific directions, you come upon the driveway into the property and it looks hidden and non descript. You turn off the coastal road and enter the property through a simple gate.......then you're eyes start to buldge because you can't believe this is where you have come to stay. A beautiful upward curving manicured tropical drive is lined with palm trees. This goes on for a good half of a mile as you ascend the reserve-like (I think it is a reserve - 50 acers) property. Then you see the house. Wow. I said to myself, "All my hard work in finding the perfect house for the perfect family vacation (my parents included) and I DID IT!" The house is soooo perfect. The photos say it all. It should be in architectural digest (remember David Bowie's house in Bali - this is as close as you'll come to it without traveling over the pacific). The views are stunning and dramatic. This is a great location for a photo shoot. I am an architectural designer and this was nirvana! I took soooo many pictures and hope to put them up on this site if there is a way to share them. Stop your search, I have done it for you (40 hours of house hunting - no kidding!) This is the place for you! The house itself is peaceful and secluded. Several mornings I woke up early and hiked up behind the house into the ancient forest to discover tree frogs, monkeys and toucans The dining is great in the dominical area and grocery shopping is 10 mins down the road. The caretakers are very enthusiastic and a wealth of information. Dominical is the place to go because it is still the unspoiled true Costa Rica. This may be over the top as far as a review but when you have a vacation this great after putting in so much time and energy you feel like you've won the Oscar for travel planning.

The small print: I am in no way related to or knew the homeowners when I booked this house. I just loved it in the photos and made the contact!

Amazing vacation!

Lattice house was quite simply....perfection! We spent a week in paradise with another family (total 8 of us) and loved every minute! It is a long transfer from San Jose airport but totally worth it once you finally get there. The open air feel of the house was great and the pool is the best feature of all. Ana took care of all our needs and went above and beyond to help with all the details of our trip. She arranged for Alexandra to cook two dinners for us which was totally worth it. Definitely hike to the waterfall and explore the property. All in all, a great trip and Lattice House does not disappoint.

Magical

  • 5 of 5

My entire family (including my teenager and my parents) loved staying at Lattice House. We appreciated everything about it, from the architecture which takes advantage of the view, to the decor which is fitting of the location, to the landscaping which enhances the experience. We could tell how much thought and care went into the design of the entire property. We loved having wildlife all around the house: birds, butterflies, toucans, monkeys, coatis, a toad and every insect imaginable. We hiked to the waterfall (that was an adventure) and had a refreshing dip in the water. We wandered through the orchard and looked at all the fruits and trees. And best of all, we spent hours and hours in the pool, cooling off from the heat, looking at that gorgeous view and just enjoying the jungle sounds all around us.

The staff is wonderful. Ana is top notch. We really liked being able to text her any time we needed anything. We enjoyed two meals prepared by Alexandra. One day we had a female kiskadee that flew up in the alcove above the kitchen and couldn't seem to get back out of the house. She spent many hours making distressed sounds that upset my mom. So we texted Ana, who sent Juan and he rescued the bird with a ladder. Then he asked if we wanted a photo of her before he let her go outside. Just one example of how well the staff responds to a "crisis" at the house.

As for things we would change, I would have to say NOTHING. Everything was exceptional. My mom especially (as someone who keeps a very clean house) loved how the staff stays on top of everything in terms of proper maintenance. Pool is very well-cared for and we appreciated that, because in the heat (the locals said we were there during an especially hot week) we spent much of our time in that glorious pool!

This is the first time we've been to Costa Rica (and to Central America). I can't imagine a better place to have stayed. Honestly, I can't imagine a better house and view than Lattice House. It made our vacation unforgettable.

One Week is Not Enough!

  • 5 of 5

This is one of those reviews that I hate to write, because I don’t want the secret out about how WONDERFUL Pat’s home is - we want to keep it to ourselves, but, that would not be fair! We travelled with an extended family of 9 to this paradise and all of us were very sad to leave. We only got through a small portion of the activities there are to do in the area, mostly because it was very hot, and the pool was way too enticing! (There is a great binder provided at the house about the home and things to do – we referred to it regularly.) We did the ATV tour from Uvita, Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary, Ventanas Beach caves at low tide, the on-site waterfall (yes, we are very out of shape, and the 9am departure was already too hot – when Ana says to start early, she’s not kidding!); the private waterfall at the end was totally worth the effort! The kids did the ziplining, and needless to say, loved it! We abandoned the Whale’s Tail hike at low tide – it was really rocky, but, the sandy beach portion was beautiful! Daily we went to Playa Hermosa – at about 4pm - so that the teenagers could get their daily fix of boogie boarding – although all ages (13-77) indulged. Waves are rough there, so, not for really little ones. The ocean water was warm like bath water. We did see animals each day on the property, but, only one monkey sighting of a white-faced monkey on-site – although, we heard monkeys regularly, they were not easy to spot. Toucans everywhere! Alexandra and Juan cooked for us twice – sooo much food, enough for lunch left-overs the next day! It was all delicious, but, we are now especially craving the guacamole and the hearts of palm appetizers served with chips – we could have eaten just that for dinner – I never would have believed that the kids would love a hearts of palm salad, but, they did. Each one of us wants to come back, and we would definitely recommend The Lattice House to family and friends. The 13-year-old said that the home and property “are better than the pictures” – as hard as it is to believe! Thank you for sharing your paradise with us Pat! (Did I use enough exclamation points to get my point across – Loved it!!!)

Elegant and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The pictures of the house and property are beautiful, but it is even more spectacular in person. The house is spotlessly clean, beautifully furnished and well equipped. From everything you would need in the kitchen to pool and and beach towels to walking sticks for hikes on the well maintained trails on the property. Ana was there to greet us and help us get settled, she also helped arrange some outings. She was there if/when we needed her but never in the way. Alexandra cooked us two delicious meals, but we also used the well equipped kitchen and grill to cook some of our own meals. It was everything we hoped for and more.

Well managed, well equipped, beautiful

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our adult children spent 2 weeks at Lattice House. We have rented lots of villas over the years and this is one of the best, if not, THE BEST. Where to start?!

-The view (as can be seen on the website) is spectacular, lovely just to hang at the edge of the infinity pool and look at the Pacific

-the grounds have been planted with gorgeous flowering bushes and trees that attract butterflies and birds

-the wildlife right on the grounds is astounding: monkeys, coatis, geckos, colorful birds (wish I knew more to identify them, but for sure many toucans, parrots in the morning, vultures riding the thermals, tanagers, hummingbirds), collared peccaries, a sloth (!), a few snakes, incredible insects (colorful caterpillars, katydids, mantids, butterflies, moths)

- the location is between 2 small beach towns, so restaurants, grocery, activities, all very convenient

-Ana the manager is on site and wonderful at sorting out any problems (which there were few) and suggesting activities....but never intrusive. Super privacy, which was good since my sons insisted on skinny-dipping!

-We had Alexandra, with help from husband Juan, make dinner for us every other night. The food was great, reasonable, and they were a delight to have around....jolly, smiling people. Alexandra made a very special birthday dinner for my daughter and was so thoughtful to meet her vegetarian diet.

-although we never met Pat, she was so accommodating and easy to work with.

-Lattice house is the best equipped place we've ever stayed. Beautiful appliances, dishes, powerful air conditioning in bedrooms, lots of good lighting.

-We would recommend the river rafting trip, the horseback ride to the waterfalls, the hike on property to the waterfall, the Altura Wildlife Preserve right down the road.

It is as wonderful as the website made it out to be.
