Tomar was founded in the mid twelfth century and at its helm sits the Castle of the Knights Templar overlooking the city and the whole surrounding region. Within its grounds lays the famous Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. During the first centuries, in the Middle Ages, the city was the Portuguese headquarters of the Order of the Knights Templar which later survived as the Order of Christ. Its privileges and wealth were behind the great Portuguese maritime ventures of the fifteenth century, which partly explains the city’s political and spiritual relevance over the centuries.
