About the Owner

We are 40 somethings who live full time in Hood River, Oregon. We are self employed and run a small video production company and run kids adventure camps in the Columbia Gorge. When we aren't working we take our daughter to the beach where we unwind, surf and eat cinnamon buns at Bread and Ocean. We feel fortunate to live and vacation in such beautiful places. While in Hood River we grow our own food, run our cars on vegetable oil and do what we can to live a simpler life.

Lovely cabin

Great place and great location. We stayed for 2 days and travelled south of manzanita the first day and north the second. Manzanita is also such great beach and nice town. We loved the cabin. Felt very cozy.

Unique homey cabin, wonderful for all!

  • 5 of 5

We took our adult children and their 16 month old on vacation and ran across this perfect cabin! The upstairs is beautiful as the kitchen and great room are all connected, not to mention the balcony access from there. As we like to cook a lot and share food as a family tradition, someone is always in the kitchen, which made being together even more awesome! The kitchen is loaded, we found everything we needed and more. The bedrooms are on the lower level which was exceptionally nice as my grandson could go to sleep at his bedtime and not be wakened by us in the upper level. The bath is also spacious and in the lower level, which was really nice for privacy, away from the main area of living. No TV, no internet which is perfect for card playing . games, and family fun. The area is beautiful, grocery store and sweet town with fun shops all right there. We are outdoorsy people, and truly could not have enjoyed this experience more!

Suited our needs perfectly

  • 4 of 5

The pictures are misleading. It's not as large as it seems and it's not off by itself but is very close to the house next door but it makes up for that in its charm. Very cute and suited my family perfectly. We really enjoyed our stay.

Nice! Mostly everything was as expected.

Quiet and comfortable. We had a nice getaway. Just a couple things... We love to cook and the kitchen is a great size for that, but would have enjoyed a few more utensils. Peeler was broken, or missing its handle so it was hard to peel our veggies. Garlic press would be nice, but we chopped it, so that was fine. Maybe one or two more ice trays. Maybe some smaller bowls other than just cereal bowls. More wine glasses, although three was enough for our purposes. Maybe some lights under the cupboards in the kitchen and above the counter. A few deck chairs would be awesome. There was only one, and also a broken chair that should be tossed out since there is a nail sticking up. We brought one camp chair and used the kitchen chairs. We did smell gas near the little gas heater so we didn't use it, but maybe that is normal, I have never had one. Also, the little rotating heater downstairs in the room with the double beds was a bit noisy and had a hot smell when we turned it on. You may want to check it and see if it needs to be replaced. Really, though, we had a lovely time, and liked the close access to the town of Manzanita. We went to the farmers' market on Friday evening, which was super great. Thanks so much for letting us stay!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review, Jennifer! After a busy summer we appreciate knowing what needs to be replaced. The home is used every night of the summer which means we can't get out to use it. I've made a list from your list of items that need to be replaced. Thanks for that. We had another guest mention the broken deck chair and we have that on the list to replace as well. About the heaters, the upstairs fireplace/heater is fueled with propane. Typically, there is a bit of a propane smell when it's first lit. The small heater downstairs is only a back up heater. The baseboard heaters work in all the bedrooms and are controlled with the thermostat. I'll check it out the back up heater when we're there next. Thanks for the heads up!

Very comfortable casual space, in a quiet neighborhood not far from all the wonders of Manzanita.

We really enjoyed our stay at this cute cozy hexagon cabin. Somewhat sparse, but had everything we were looking for. Nice gas stove, comfy beds, plenty of quick hot water. I loved the feeling of the hexagon main floor. It was nice getting away from tv, internet, and all the distractions of everyday life.

Quiet neighborhood but disappointed in our stay

  • 3 of 5

I HATE writing negative reviews, so I am going to start with the positives. Manzanita is a really cute little town and the proximity of the house was just a five minute drive from the main strip and the beach. The queen bed was comfortable and this house has a lot of potential, but I felt somewhat misled by the ad on VRBO. If they have recently remodeled this house I am not sure what or where remodeling was done. I have a crawling toddler so the carpet was a big let down, as it was very old and didn't seem to have been shampooed in quite some time. The granite kitchen counters had a film on them and didn't seem like they had been properly cared for or cleaned. There was a pack n play and a rocking chair in the second bedroom downstairs which was awesome, but the Windows didn't have blinds on them so we didn't feel comfortable leaving her in that room by herself. The deck upstairs was great and had a lot of potential but there were two old chairs and one was broken. The picnic table downstairs would have been better utilized upstairs. The BBQ was a nice feature but it was so dirty that it didn't seem sanitary to cook on. The street is also one block from a cemetery which gave the neighborhood a less charming vibe than I was hoping for. Again, I really don't like to write negative reviews, but I wish the reviews before mine had been more transparent about the condition of this house. We were also left with a list of tasks to complete before we left the house, which you see a lot in VRBO's but it included things like wiping down the counter. Why am I paying a cleaning fee if I am essentially cleaning the place myself? Overall very disappointed and feel like the "recently remodeled" piece of their ad should be removed or better explained.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review Stephanie. It's true that the cabin receives hard wear as it is typically rented every night of the summer. We have the carpet's cleaned twice a year (last time was in June) but alas, not everyone takes care of the home as we would. The "film" on the counters you referred to is just what happens with use and marble counters. We have researched, sanded and treated those counters but any water left on them leaves a mark. Hence they don't ever look wiped down despite the care from our housekeeper. We are unaware of the broken chairs on the deck but plan to take a look and replace them if necessary this fall. As for the BBQ, we replace the BBQ every other year. It gets hard use from guests and however the last guest leaves it is how the next guest gets it. That's why we have a check out list to have our guests leave the home in good condition for the next. We ask our guests to clean up the kitchen when they check out so that our housekeeper can take care of the other chores for turning over the cabin. You can imagine the mess that can be left in the kitchen if guests aren't asked to clean up their dishes. Our cleaning rates would be double if the housekeeper had to do dishes. Instead we ask guests to do that part of their clean up so the house remains affordable to rent. I agree that we should take down the "newly remodeled" part of our listing. It's what we used when we first bought the place and listed in on VRBO. We still believe that the house is clean, comfortable, simple, affordable and truly a unique spot to spend a few days at the beach. Many of our guests agree. Thank you for spending the time on your review so that we can clarify with other future guests.

From the Owner

We had a dream to own a log cabin one day. When we moved to Oregon the log cabin dream turned into a tree house dream which turned into a yurt on the Oregon coast dream. We didn't plan on buying a house but when we saw our cabin we knew this was the place for us. It was a log cabin, treehouse, yurt all in one! We love the relaxed environment of the Manzanita area and prefer it to the more touristy areas on the coast.

From the Owner

We enjoy cooking big breakfasts in the cozy main room and taking morning runs on the Alder Creek Farm trail. Other mornings we'll go to Bread and Ocean for a tasty morning treat and head to Neahkanie Mountain to see what kind of mood the ocean is in. We love day trips down to Oswald West Park where we haul our daughter, our surfboards and snacks for a day at the beach. Oswald is our favorite beach to enjoy with our family. In the evenings we BBQ on the deck at the house and cuddle in front of the fire while we play games and read. We leave the cabin fully restored, rested and grateful.
