About this property

Private waterfront cottage with pool on Church Creek

Close to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and the Harriet Tubman Center, enjoy peaceful days at our secluded waterfront cottage on Church Creek. Two miles from a main road, and our closest neighbor is across a cove, our estate offers 50 acres of privacy and one of the best waterfront views on the Chesapeake. Relax, enjoy a view from every window and nature all around you. Excellent walking, swimming (in-ground pool-May 3 -Oct 1), great birding and bicycling. Launch your kayak from the backyard. Perfect private getaway!

The space
Plan your escape at Harwood's Choice, our 50-acre estate, a natural, peaceful, rustic setting with excellent views of Church Creek, with privacy and space. The cottage and main house sit on a five-acre parcel of yard and waterfront; there is quite a bit of distance between the two houses. The pool is located a short walk from the cottage. Our remaining 45 acres are wooded with lanes to walk. It is the perfect place for either a private weekend getaway or a long-term place to work virtually. Note that the owners do not live on the property but occasionally visit the main house for a few hours. We always check with our guests before planning a visit.

Newly renovated, gorgeous in-ground pool and deck with water views available for guests' exclusive use at their own risk (May- Sept). There are four lounge chairs and two umbrellas for relaxing and sunning on the pool deck.

Excellent for watching birds, deer, fox, wild turkeys, eagles, osprey, and just relaxing and enjoying the peace of nature and the water. Originally built as servants' quarters for the main house, Harwood Cottage overlooks a cove of Church Creek. Guests are welcome to wander and explore this peaceful place. Our place is so special to us that in 2006, we placed it in the Maryland Environmental Trust, which means that it will be conserved forever, and will never be subdivided.

Beautiful country lanes for walks and bird-watching. The perfect place to get away from it all.

We do not permit hunting on our property or fishing from our shoreline. You may not bring onto the property the carcass of a hunted animal.

This lovely cottage can sleep 2 couples, 2 singles, or a couple and a single. It has two bedrooms upstairs with nice views of our cove, each with a king bed; one of the beds is a California king. Both are memory foam mattresses. Each bedroom has two bedside tables with lamps, a closet, chair, dresser and two luggage racks. The bedrooms are nestled in a dormer, so one side has a sloping ceiling. Both bedrooms have quiet, wall-mounted mini-split HVAC units with remote controls. No more noisy window AC units!

Downstairs has a fully equipped kitchen with an island. Kitchen has a coffee service featuring a selection of Green Mountain blends (including decaf choices) plus herbal teas and hot chocolate; all individual k-cups for your hygiene. There is a microwave, glasstop electric stove and a small countertop dishwasher. Dishes, silverware, pots, pans, stock pot, cooking utensils and BBQ cooking tools are all supplied.

Kitchen has a side entrance door that leads to a small patio with a charcoal grill and table and chairs for al fresco dining. There is another patio with Adirondack chairs closer to the water's edge. Both patios are for the exclusive use of our guests (seasonal).

Dining room has a table and 4 chairs plus two wingback chairs and side table and a wall-mounted mini-split HVAC unit with remote control.

Living room has a couch, rocking chair and side table, flat screen TV with DirectTV, and a wall-mounted mini-split HVAC unit with remote control.

Bathroom has bathtub/shower combo and storage shelves, overhead vent fan and lighting.

Utility room with concrete floor has Speed Queen washer and dryer, shelves for storage, hanging racks to drip dry or hang your gear, and a utility sink. Dryer has a steam setting for removing wrinkles for those working virtually and needing to look nice for those video calls.

Patio, chairs, and charcoal grill are located out the side door. Citronella candles supplied; please bring your own charcoal.

There are four chaise lounges and two umbrellas on the pool deck for poolside relaxing.

Bring your binoculars. We have quite an array of bird life including bald eagles, osprey, kingfishers, prairie warblers, bluebirds, cuckoos, overwintering diving ducks, a family of red-headed woodpeckers, northern nob-white quail, and a fascinating Chuck-will's-widow whom we hear at night in the summertime.

No smoking or vaping anywhere in the house or outside- ANYWHERE.

Bring your kayak, canoe, or SUP and launch right behind the cottage into our cove and explore as far as you wish. Church Creek leads into Fishing Creek which leads to the Little Choptank River and then into the Chesapeake Bay.

House has satellite wifi and a plug-in USB four-port; also provided is a surge-protected power strip for your convenience.

Not suitable for children under 5 years old. You must be at least 25 years old to book this house.

Ten minutes to Cambridge.

Check out is 11 am.

Guests may walk the grounds but they are not permitted to enter any of the other buildings on the property.

We do not host events of any kind in this space. We are not an event venue and any guests who use the space for a purpose other than an overnight stay will be asked to leave immediately.

Adorable little house on the Water
We loved our short stay at this little home on the water. The house was spotless, the bed was very comfortable, and it had everything we needed. We saw lots of wildlife and the sunsets were beautiful! The host was wonderful to work with. Internet was a little spotty, which would have made "working" from there difficult, but we managed. Would definitely come back again!

Wonderful getaway
My daughters and I really needed a break, and this place was perfect! Very clean and had everything as described. Peaceful location with stunning sunsets. We went on bike rides and had picnics and slept so peacefully. The house is so quiet! Cindy was very responsive and easy to communicate with. We will be back for sure. I recommend this place highly. Loved it!

Weekend away
The cabin was surrounded with lovely water views from every window. I woke up the first morning to the treat of seeing a bald eagle in a tree outside my window. Lots of nature to make bird watchers happy. We saw a flock of northern flickers and wild turkeys in addition to our bald eagle friend. The cabin had everything we needed and the beds were quite comfortable. It was a very nice weekend away.

Wonderful stay
Cyndi is a responsive and responsible host. She kept us informed about potential weather changes and made sure we had everything we may need for a comfortable stay. A beautiful, tranquil place. Everything was as described but more beautiful in person. We would love to stay at this stunning property again.

Quiet & Relaxing.......Perfect
The goal of our trip to this cottage was to relax and unwind, and this place didn't disappoint! Beautiful location and very quiet. We were greeted every day by whitetail deer and lots of canadian geese. Its close enough to Cambridge if you want to find things to do and check out Hoopers Island! The owners were great in communication and the cottage was well stocked! The pool was excellent. I would definitely stay here again!

I am a former competitive cyclist (road/criterium/time trial racer) and also love to canoe. I have a pretty good understanding of what outdoor-oriented people are looking for. I also am a bird watcher and love our rich and varied bird life.

Why they chose this property

I grew up in Church Creek, on the very same property where our cottage is. Creating this place for others and being able to share our beautiful property has been a labor of love. I am very excited to have you come stay on our beautiful land and enjoy the woods, the yard, the pool and the water.

What makes this property unique

You can reach Fishing Creek and the Little Choptank River and then into the Chesapeake Bay.
