Riverfront/Mountain View: Priv. Dock, Kayaks, Jonboat-Hershey, Amish, Gettysburg

Wonderful! 4.9/5 -
(80 traveler reviews)

Property Details

Updated: Aug 17, 2016
5 Bedrooms, sleeps 13, 2 baths, sunroom, deck, dock, 4 kayaks provided

The perfect vacation getaway awaits you in our waterfront home. It’s near all the attractions of central Pennsylvania, yet it feels so far away from the crowds. We are located just one half mile off Highway 322/22, within a 30-minute drive to Hershey and under an hour to Gettysburg or the Dutch country. You enter your own private acre where Mother Nature beckons you through the stunning views of the many windows. Launch from your own private dock to a kayak adventure among the islands with the bald eagles and wild life that await, or soak in the beauty of the natural surroundings from the serenity of the porch swing on the riverbank. A 16-foot double wide jon boat with 9.9 hp motor is also available for an extra fee.

Our family has many special memories of get-togethers at the river house, and we enjoy sharing it with others. We have four kayaks (including a double kayak so an adult can take a small child out), a canoe, a few inner tubes, and we provide basic fishing gear. You can wade or swim in the river right behind the house, and in summer the water level is usually pretty low, so kids can wade along the bank and spend hours catching minnows and other critters. You can take swimmers upstream in the boat and let them float back to the house on inner tubes.

There is a private dock for your use and a porch swing down by the river, as well as a fire pit down on the river bank where you can roast marshmallows and hot dogs.

Numerous hiking trails are nearby, including the Appalachian Trail a 10-minute drive away, and there's a rails-to-trails biking/hiking trail with 18 miles of wilderness trail with no roads, yet it is level and easy for children to navigate. With just a five-minute drive, you can take a three mile walk around Wildwood Lake.

The property sits along the historic Pennsylvania canal system, and our lane was the original towpath where mules pulled barges along the canal. To get to the house from State Road 322, you drive 1/2 mile down the lane with some paved and some unpaved sections, but easily passable in all seasons.

The house itself is over 100 years old, and it has random width solid Pennsylvania white oak floors in the kitchen, spacious living/dining area and in the sunroom. The rest of the house has oak flooring, tile, or carpeting (master bedroom only.) We have done two major additions to the original structure. The kitchen is not an eat-in, but it is well equipped with a ceramic top stove, refrigerator with ice maker, a KitchenAid dishwasher, microwave, upgraded small electrics (toaster, pancake griddle, blender, waffle maker, coffee grinder, Keurig, regular coffeemaker, etc.), and all the dishes and cooking utensils you might want. I find it to be more than adequate for my needs, and guests often comment on how well-furnished and handy it is, just steps from the spacious dining table that accommodates a large family or group of friends. What really takes your breath away is the view of the river as you walk into the living room and look through the columned opening through the sunroom to the river. The deck is shaded by towering trees in summer and we have a dining table and a Weber Genesis grill with a side burner on the deck. Down by the river (in all seasons except winter) is a porch swing to sit and watch the river flow, a fire ring, and a few chairs and benches.

The story behind the house is that we bought it as our vacation home in 1993, and it is only a thirty-minute drive from our primary residence. We wanted something near enough that we could use it often. As it turned out, my husband's mother who lived in Alabama was widowed and wanted to live near us. She moved into the river house and lived there for the rest of her life, enjoying watching her visiting grandchildren play on the river bank. When our children grew up and Grandmother passed away, we decided to try renting this home to travelers.

My husband Dave and I are not absentee landlords. We live in the area, and, in fact, we are often found in the small guest house on the lot next door to the river house. If you need anything, want advice about area attractions or directions, or if something should break down, you will be able to reach us directly without any trouble. I teach at HACC, the local community college, and Dave retired this year. We are excited about sharing our home that holds so many memories for us.

The arrangement of the bedrooms is as follows:

First Floor

Master – one queen bed

Second bedroom – one queen bed and one (very comfortable!) futon that can make a full-size bed

Third bedroom – one full size bed

Attic Bedrooms

(Since this is a 100-year-old attic converted into bedrooms, the attic steps are a little steeper and more narrow than those you would find in a contemporary home, and the ceiling follows along the roofline. The fifth, smallest bedroom is access through the large fourth bedroom. Both attic bedrooms have skylights.)

Fourth Bedroom – one queen bed, one twin bed (It also has a sitting area with a couch, chair, and TV.)

Fifth Bedroom – one full size bed, one twin bed

We mostly book through HomeAway or VRBO (or other affiliated websites) because it’s very safe and secure for our guests. Payment is either by credit card or e-check (electronic bank transfer.) If you choose credit, HomeAway charges a 3% fee, which is deducted from your security deposit refund. E-check is free.

About the Owner

My husband Dave is a Pennsylvanian, and I met him in 1982 when I came from Florida to work with the teenagers at his church for a summer. We married the next year, and have two children who are now grown. Dave is a Princeton University and Southern Seminary grad, and is currently the executive director of our state convention. I am a graduate of Jacksonville University and now have a career I am passionate about teaching students at our local community college. We both hope to retire in a few years and do more traveling, using HomeAway and VRBO to find our accommodations, of course!

Our daughter Lauren is a surgical Physician's Assistant in Alabama, and a graduate of Princeton and Emory Universities. She is an accomplished violinist and enjoys competing in triathlons. Jonathan is a Business graduate of The College of New Jersey where he was a Bonner Scholar and swim team member, and after working very successfully in business for a couple of years after graduation, he has taken a year off to travel abroad extensively.

Our family (10 adults and 4 kids) went for our family vacation in August. We had a blast!! The house was more than big enough and equipped with everything we needed! The view was awesome and the yard was so big the kids loved playing in the lake and running around in the yard! Janice and Dave are awesome! They made us feel so welcomed, left stuff to make s'mores, offered advice on things to do and always felt if there was a problem(which there were none) that they would be right there to help!! The kayaks were a big hit with my family!, just a beautiful and relaxing place to enjoy family!! Words can't really do justice to how AWESOME this place is!!!! We hope to be able to return soon! Thanks Janice and Dave!! Awesome Home!!

Magical!!! A 5+ Star Vacation.

  • 5 of 5

Myself, my husband, two daughters, their husbands and 3 grandchildren stayed at the River House recently. The property is just BEAUTIFUL and the accommodations PERFECT. Beautiful views of the river and mountains from the deck, sun porch, living room, dining room and bedrooms. Always felt like we were in a magical setting. The bedrooms on the main floor and the suite on the second floor worked perfectly and were very comfortable. The grounds are beautifully maintained, with gorgeous old trees providing shade on the deck and near the river. Our 7 month old granddaughter does not like her baths or water, but she loved the wooden double swing hooked between two large trees near the river, and so did I. She loved swinging in it and watching everyone in the water. Kayaks were provided with the rental, and everyone used them. Even took the 2 and 4 year old grandchildren out for a very calming, leisurely ride. The river was low and very calm. The little ones splashed around each day and the adults went out further or ventured out in the kayaks to the islands nearby. Each morning we were greeted by the beautiful Egrets, and in the evening, the two grandchildren would go down to the docks with my son-in-law and a flashlight to see the frogs and snappers. A few nights we sat around the fire pit near the river and roasted marshmallows. What a wonderful experience and fun time for all of us. Couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting. We would definitely return to this magical place. The owners were very nice and always available for any questions. We really needed nothing. Everything we could want was within our reach. What more could anyone ask for???? A 5+ star vacation.

Beautiful vacation home

  • 5 of 5

The property and home are very well taken care of. The owners were next door and available if anything was needed, but made it a point not to intrude. We had three generations and everyone throughly enjoyed our stay. Whether kayaking, fishing, swimming, floating on the river (kayaks, fishing poles, etc are also provided by owners) or just relaxing on the deck enjoying the view. It is also just a short drive to Hershey Park or numerous other activities. The home itself has everything you need except food. There is nothing the owners haven't thought to provide. They even provided the makings for s'mores. I would recommend this home to anyone!

Our River House Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 9 absolutely loved our week at the house on the river! Our hosts warmly welcomed us and were so helpful with anything we needed to know in relation to the house/facilities and area. The house came with everything we needed for cooking (including spices), and the bedrooms/bathrooms also were well stocked with linens, towels and sundries. We played in the river daily (swam, kayaked, tubed and jumped from the rope swing). Kayaks, canoe, and tubes were provided. Much of our time was spent on the deck overlooking the river; we ate almost all of our meals there. There is much to do close by with ball parks, Hershey Park and Capital Park. The owners tell you that they hope the house goes beyond your expectations, and it truly did. We hope to go again soon!

Paradise on the River after a Day at the Goat Show

  • 5 of 5

The River House is a short drive from the Farm Show Complex, where we spent a week at the American Dairy Goat Association National Show. After a day in the hot barn bathing and clipping goats or stirring up dust in the show ring, we returned home to our little bit of paradise on the river. We knew from the pictures and reviews that it would be lovely, but the beautifully landscaped and maintained grounds exceeded our expectations. Morning coffee on the deck was a pleasure, and the gas grill where we prepared most of our dinners was nicer than the one we have at home. Janice and Dave were the best! When we mentioned a couple of items missing from the well-equipped kitchen, they appeared magically at our door. Dave not only has a green thumb when it comes to nurturing flowers, but also offered us blueberries from their bushes before giving a couple of us a boat ride up the river where we put in our inner tubes and enjoyed floating home on the beautiful Susquehanna by-way.

Sorry we have no restaurant reviews. We never wanted to leave our river retreat and prepared all our meals there. If we ever have occasion to stay in Harrisburg again, we will book into this wonderful place. After all, we never got around to using the complimentary graham crackers, Hershey bars, and marshmallows to make S’mores!

We love this place!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 3rd time returning to this vacation house. The owners have done some impressive updates, and it is nicer every time we visit! The master bedroom is simply gorgeous with huge windows and beautiful view of the river. There is an adjacent sunroom with similar views accessible to everyone, and a lovely deck. The upstairs is excellent for kids. The kitchen is somewhat small for a large group, but very well stocked with pots, pans, and accessories in good condition. We had a wonderful time playing in the river with our little ones (ages 2, 4, 13 and 16). If you take the Jonboat up the river about 1/2 a mile there is an excellent shallow area with tons of snails and rocks, adjacent to a tree stand with a fantastic rope swing. There were plenty of life jackets to fit every size, boats, paddles, handheld nets, and inner tubes for a river float. Very nice touch to have an outside shower to wash off the river water before heading inside! The owners stay in a small guest house adjacent to the property, and are very attentive, but also give you plenty of privacy. There are tons of things to do in the area for day trips - we visited Indian Echo Caverns, Tobias Wildlife Center, and Hershey Park. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the local pizza delivery place, and there is a nice ice cream shop (3B) nearby. A wonderful time was had by all. We look forward to visiting again.

From the Owner

My husband David and I purchased this home when our two children were small so that we could have a place to get away as a family on the weekends. The appeal of this property was that it felt remote with the natural surroundings, including the river, mountains and lots of wildlife, and yet it is so convenient to Harrisburg and Hershey and all the amenities of civilization. Our primary home is located just a 30 minute drive away.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Close by are Hershey Park, Chocolate World, the Amish Dutch Country of Lancaster County, Gettysburg Battlefield and Cyclorama, and in Harrisburg the Civil War Museum, Harsco Science Center and Imax Theater, Lake Tobias Wildlife Park with its safari tour, and the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Arena. Try your luck at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, or visit local wineries and craft breweries. When you get home from a long day, enjoy birding, fishing for rainbow trout and small mouth bass, and kayaking and tubing the lazy Susquehanna in your back yard. Hike the Appalachian Trail or bike or hike an eighteen mile rails to trails loop that is the largest roadless tract of land in Pennsylvania, both within a short drive of the house.
