About this property

Salida, every good thing those other great mountain towns used to be.

Have you ever been walking along in the woods and suddenly things are just different?
Good different. Greener. More alive. We call it Spruce Pocket. Spruce Pocket is a 4 bedroom, 3 bath ranch style home with a finished basement. We are about 2 miles from the amazing little town of Salida. The property is within 150 yards of the upper Arkansas River which is one of the premier white water rafting rivers in the US. This section of the Arkansas is also a Gold Medal Fishery. If you have a major league arm and the wind is at your back you can launch a rock from our spacious redwood deck into the river. The Salida Trail System is accessible within a mile challenging accomplished mountain bikers as well as road rookies. Chaffee County has the most 14000' peaks in Colorado. The master bedroom has a breathtaking view of some the most beautiful peaks of the Sangre de Christo Mountain Range. The house sits on 4 acres, but because of the proximity to an old 62 acre dairy, it feels like a whole lot bigger. We run our horses on part of the old dairy. If you bring your horses, our pasture gate accesses about 400 square miles of state and federal land. Then there is a 9 hole golf course about 2 miles away. If you are more civilized, there are some great art galleries in Colorado's largest historic district. Restaurants are good and a couple are great. Spruce Pocket is 22 miles from the Monarch Ski Area. It is also 82 miles (plus or minus) from Breckenridge, Copper and Crested Butte...pretty sure. The important consideration is that you never see I 70. The house is pretty cool too. There is a beautiful stone (real stone) fireplace in the family room and a large screen TV for those who are not into gazing into the flames. The master bedroom has those stunning views, access to the deck and hot tub and a tiled bathroom which is to die for. If you really like tiled bathrooms. There is a guest bedroom downstairs with its own bath. An "exercise room" is available for the gym enthusiasts. Spruce Pocket is beautifully landscaped. The hot tub is drained and cleaned after each group leaves. As a result, the tub is seasonal.

Family ski trip
My husband and I took the family to Salida for a Christmas ski trip. The house was perfect for our needs. We felt secluded while being close to town. The kitchen had everything for cooking meals. Tony was very accommodating and easy to contact.

Fantastic!
Tony was the nicest host we've ever met! He made sure that all the things (like soaps, shampoo, plenty of towels, etc.) that we needed for our stay were available, and the kitchen was surprisingly well-stocked, too! The beds were super comfortable, the house and property were fun to explore, and the view from the master bedroom was jaw-dropping! It was so neat to see the stars at night and wake up to beautiful sunrises. If we ever have another opportunity to visit Salida, we will definitely reserve Tony's home again. Loved it!

About the host

I am a fourth generation Colorado boy. I was born, raised and educated in the Denver metropolitan area. Denver was a great place to grow up. I am so grateful for my years in Denver, but I always dreamed of living in the mountains. In 1992 I drew a circle. It had a 150 mile radius. Denver was in the center. I made a list of the characteristics of the ideal community. Schools, outdoor activities, quality of life, economic opportunities, demographics.....Far and away, Salida was the best fit for my family and I. I am so blessed to live here.

Why they chose this property

When I was in my 20's I envisioned a life on a 160 acre ranch with a river running through it. Add a strawberry roan I would name Cree. As time wore on and I realized what the work load would be I recognized that I didn't have the skill or the number of hours in the day to make it work. My dream had to be pared down. When I found Spruce Pocket I knew I had found home. It is about 4 acres above a beautiful stretch of the Arkansas River. It has an inspiring view of the Sangre de Christo Mountains from the master bedroom. It is about 85 miles to Breckenridge or Copper Mountain or Crested Butte. I can walk to a Gold Medal fishery. There are about 400 square miles of trails to ride my horse or mountain bike right outside my pasture gate. The 62 acres next to me is an old dairy. You feel like you're in the middle of 160 acres. Besides I think my heart is out there.

What makes this property unique

The bright lights and tall buildings of Salida are two miles away. In the summer I can get in my open kayak....a ducky and float down to some really great restaurants for dinner. If you want to visit galleries Salida has some really good galleries. Then there are the mountain bike trails. In recent years they have become worthy of our community. Pretty diverse and sometimes challenging. The locals are colorful. A bunch of people who are in Salida because of the life style. A happier group. The ski areas, hiking, rafting, mountain biking, fishing, rafting, the galleries all in one exquisitely beautiful valley.
