Mākaha is on the less developed, less gentrified side of Oʻahu, generally middle and working class families, still retaining some of its laid-back rural character. It is a place where many Native Hawaiian families live. MBC is in a residential area, so there arenʻt resort amenities within walking distance, although Ko Olina is driveable. Please don't mistake this wonderful place for Waikiki (or Lanikai!).
The Leeward side is rugged and drier, although the valleys can be lush. The ocean water is clearer (due to less development), the beaches less crowded and among the most beautiful, and the lifestyle is family-oriented vs. tourist-oriented.
Although you can drive anyway from Makaha, rush hour traffic can be brutal, so car trips are best during non-commuter times -- of course, you may not feel any need to go elsewhere once you see and swim Papaoneone.
