About Barbara Rushton
I believe that my move to Hawaii in 1997 is a perfect example of why the Big Island is referred to as the 'Healing Island'. Sure, I had fallen in love with Hawaii ever since my first vacation here in the '80s, but I was far from financially ready to make the move until pow! my life blew up one insane day, and the decision to move was made for me! And so it was, within 22 days, I resigned from my position as a police administrator, divorced, and hopped a plane bound for Kailua-Kona, Hawaii with my 80 year old mother. Why Hawaii? It was the only place on earth where I had always felt completely happy and healthy and where I knew I would be safe to begin a new life. It is often said that the Mana, or 'Spirit', of this island calls out to those whose hearts need to heal. I know now that it was not a coincidence that I was called here or that I found an old coffee plantation house for sale, next to the most famous 'place of refuge' on the island, Puuhonua O Honaunau. With pennies down, we bought it and learned how to grow and roast coffee! and hung macadamia nuts to dry in our old panty hose! Eventually, we sold that wonderful place for such a profit that you may now guess the rest of this story: that first humble house, our place of refuge, sold for an amount large enough to provide not only for our next home, but also for the purchase of this beautiful condo at Punalu'u! And now I am blessed to offer a haven and oasis to travellers and visitors from all over the world, whether weary from life and needing to heal, as I was; or those coming to explore and enjoy the wonders of Hawaii. I still pinch myself often, to be sure this is all real!
Barbara Rushton purchased this Condo in 2003
Why Barbara Rushton chose Pāhala
I first saw Colony One at Sea Mountain way back in the '80s when we stopped at the Black Sand Beach on a tour bus, and I vowed then that I would find a way to stay there on my very next trip to the islands. Sea Mountain is unique, not only to the Big Isle, but truly anywhere else in the entire island chain! Not a ticky-tacky high rise, this garden-style small complex sits on a bluff like a quaint Polynesian Village might have, with the calm, turquoise Pacific Ocean at its foreground and the dark green forestland of Mauna Loa Volcano as its background. I can't imagine a more perfect location for a vacation, as we're located half-way between the 'big' towns of Kona and Hilo, and only a 30 minute drive to the Volcanoes National Park. There's plenty to do without ever leaving the resort, as well! With our own magnificent black sand beach, Sea Mountain Golf Course, a beautiful fresh water pool and a volcano-style spa, tennis courts, tropical gardens and manicured lawns to enjoy, I jumped at the first possible chance to purchase one that I could afford, in 2003. I've had nothing but positive experiences managing the rentals myself, and I've met people from all over the world!
What makes this Condo unique
The perfect day for me while staying at the Turtle Hut myself always begins with watching the SUN-RISE out of the ocean with a freshly brewed cup of local coffee, right on my lanai. Remember, we're located on the windward coast, so its the sunrise that lights up the sky with every glorious color you can imagine, and I promise you'll re-define 'pink' and 'orange' and 'red' . I always have great company on the lanai, as our neighborhood cardinals and finch families will be waiting for me --sometimes chirping their impatience from atop the chairs! -- calling for their pieces of fruit and nuts! We've given them all names, down to the smallest male yellow finch with a broken left foot, who we call - you guessed it: 'Lefty'. When I'm lucky enough to have finished most of a papaya from the garden here, I usually take off for a good, long walk. There are endless walking or hiking choices here, depending on your conditioning, time and interests. One of my guests called me one day so thrilled that he had found waterfalls on his hike during a heavy rain. The perfect day's end always is spent here in our magnificent volcano-style spa. It's huge and the perfect place to un-wind from a long day while gazing at unbelievably clear night skies. I love listening to the stories of other guests, sharing their adventures of the day, and sometimes competing in counting the falling stars above.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Everything was great. The owner gave us a lot of details.
The only negative point were the upper tenants. They didn’t have any respect. The first night they arrived at midnight, the second night at 1 a.m. They acted like they were alone, very noisy and not in the « middle » of the night.
This is more suited for two people not 4, we were way too crammed in there and didn't even have anywhere to put the luggage. It looks like it hasn't been updated since the 80's which would be ok but I really felt like it was just worn-out looking. The beach is not close to the unit at all, you still have to drive (it's a mile away, but with beach gear it's a good walk). There is NOTHING around as far as grocery stores etc. We found one but it was very small with most items outdated. The locals use the pool as if it's theirs, there is NO ONE around to keep an eye on it, we had some locals come up and tell us we needed to move because they wanted to sit in our spot, they had 7 chairs and 3 tables, that left like 2 or 3 chairs and one table that were in the sun, we only needed two chairs for our party of 4. They were very rude, drinking beer in glass bottles and smoking weed! I'm not sure if it's legal there but I don't want to be around it. They need to do something about the locals just walking in, I was floored at the people coming and going like it was their home. I would give it a 2 star but the turtles are amazing! The beach is public so you can just drive to it yourself, the condo is outdated, cramped and the closest thing to you is an hour to hour and a half away. It's not a horrible place and once the owner got their phone back she was good with replying to me but it really needs to be a 2 person unit. It's a studio not a one bedroom so expect for everyone to be able to see everyone else.
Aloha dearly Misty, and what a shocking disappointment to read your review just now! I’m so very sorry you felt so negatively about our furnishings, which I can only assure other readers are high-end, beautiful tropical sets, pristinely maintained by our wonderful housekeeper Sharon. Similarly, our sheets, towels, pillows, kitchen ware and dining ware are excellent quality and constantly replaced. No one has offered feedback similar to yours, ever, including the four families who stayed in the condo after your departure. In fact, they gave us 5 Star reviews!
However, the poolside encounter you had with locals? is totally inexcusable and against the rules posted both inside each unit and poolside. I wish you had immediately called either of our resident managers Jon and Debbie to deal with those people! They would have been ejected and permanently banned from the pool for violating so many very serious health and safety rules, most notably glass containers. No alcohol or pot smoking is ever allowed, nor is “reserving” chairs or tables or EVER treating another guest in such repulsive ways. Honestly, my blood boils every time I read your comments and I keep wondering if you might recall hearing anyone’s name in that group? Even at this late date, our managers would very much appreciate having some identifying information so these people can be barred from future bookings.
Misty, I know how big a financial and emotional investment this trip must have been for you, and I’m so sorry we failed to give you the Hawaiian vacation of your dreams. I know it’s not a lot, but I’m going to refund you $85.00, the cost of one night’s rental.
Always with aloha,
Clean, quiet, where we wanted to be and the turtles obligingly made appearances daily on the black sand beach...mahalo nui loa
Great, responsive owner and manager. Nearby beach is excellent. Space is a little tight for four people but good value. Kitchen and dining worked well. Be aware, no A/C can be an issue on hot days. Golf course appears closed permanently.
Quite, Peaceful Get-away
We thought the property was immaculately clean and comfortable. The kitchen was very well equipped, and even without air conditioning we were able to sleep pretty comfortably at night by keeping the front door open as well as the patio door. (We would have felt safer doing this if we could have locked the screen door, but we rigged up a booby trap) The property was beautiful and so close to black sand beach where we enjoyed spending the day snorkeling and watching the turtles. It was not too far from Volcano national park which we went to twice during out stay for hikes and sight-seeing. The only disappointment was that we were not able to use the pool or grills. We had planned spend our days hiking and then taking a dip in the pool to cool off. We also purchased lots of food to grill our meals outside but we ended up having to cook inside. That is the only reason I did not give it a 5 star. The property manager was gracious and compensated us, monetarily, which we really appreciated. If you are looking for a true get-away, I would recommend this property.
Turtle Hut was wonderful. Quite and Beautiful. Barbara was amazing with any information and helping direct you to places and activities. The condo was perfect. Would definitely recommend staying at this lovely home away from home. Mahalo hui Hou
