He mentions Pilrig House in his novels: Kidnapped and Catriona.

About Debbie or Philip Martin

2017 will be our 12th year running Pilrig House Apartments...

Philip is a retired mechanical engineer, who travelled the world as a naval engineer for many years - living in Mexico and Belize for periods of time. He is an historian, and has amazing local and Scottish historical knowledge... I am an ex-copy editor who worked for over 20 years in the field of publishing, and then on a freelance basis as an editor/proofreader.

We decided, after meeting, that we couldn't bear to sell Philip's apartment in Pilrig House - it was just so special, and so we decided to turn it into a rental apartment. A year later, with great joy, we moved back into the house ourselves, then we purchased another apartment for renovation and rental, and so it just grew over the years... We have made many great friends, and still gain enormous joy and satisfaction in welcoming visitors here from around the world...It is also lovely that so many people, and their friends and families, come back time and time again.

Our emphasis, right from the start, was to create incredibly well-equipped, clean, and exceptionally comfortable accommodation - and to maintain this high standard. We also wanted to ensure that we exceeded our guests’ needs. We always personally offer a warm welcome, and are really pleased to be able to provide further support your stay, if it is wanted! On arrival, we take you into the apartment, showing you all the need-to-know things, and will always take as long as you want to answer all your questions!

Debbie or Philip Martin purchased this apartment in 1985

Why Debbie or Philip Martin chose Edinburgh

Well - there's the fact that Pilrig House is utterly unique as an historic 17th-century townhouse in Edinburgh located in a park - then there's the Edinburgh skyline views, the peace, the pretty gardens. Pilrig House also has a wonderful ambiance - it is just so special. There is much to enjoy about living here. We just couldn't replicate what Pilrig House offers if we searched the length and breadth of Edinburgh. And the fact that we can walk into the centre of Edinburgh in 15 mins, or take a bus right outside the park... more than anything, we love the feeling of living in the country while living in the city.

In each apartment, the living-rooms and bedrooms have park and/or garden views – a lovely change from looking out onto city streets or other buildings! The house’s history also gives it a special feel – some people liken it to staying in a Scottish castle…

Robert Louis Stevenson’s family lived in Pilrig House and he visited here often as a child – we include his novels in all three apartments, so you can read extracts that refer to Pilrig House, and imagine living in another time… One national newspaper journalist wrote after staying here that the house has a ‘timelessness’ that made for instant relaxation….

And, the centre of Edinburgh is under a mile away – most guests walk there, and sometimes take a bus home at the end of the day… and describe their pleasure at returning to the peace and tranquility of Pilrig House. Great shops are almost on your doorstep – supermarkets, cafes, bars, restaurants… all within easy walking distance.

Many of our overseas guests come back every year. Our Guestbook comments and reviews on all independent sites have been 100% positive - hopefully reassuring you of what you will find when you come to stay.

What makes this apartment unique

All of the above! We awaken to birdsong, can gaze out our windows and see the park in all seasons, or sit in the garden to the side of the house in total privacy and enjoy the tranquility, and read a book... Everything we need is close-by - shops, transport links, restaurants, Edinburgh's main train station... and, there are beautiful drives to the East Lothian countryside and coastal trail, including some charming villages and historic castles - within a half-hour's drive. This coastline has 22 amazing golf-courses, many located directly parallel to the sea - Gullane, North Berwick, Craigielaw, Muirfield - to name but a few - to whet the appetite of those golfers out there!

Another great bonus is the fact that we can offer guests free parking in a private car park directly to the rear of the property – this is incredibly rare in Edinburgh – most properties have ‘metered’ parking on a street outside their property, which never guarantees a space, and is incredibly expensive – it means you have to top up the metre every couple of hours!

Philip and I often walk to the ‘Shore’ area of Leith, on the waterfront – which is Edinburgh’s port – a 5-10 minute walk from Pilrig House – it has great restaurants and bistros. You can also use your membership card to visit the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s ‘The Vaults’ premises here – even if you don’t like whisky – a great place to have a bar lunch in the oldest building in Leith.

Exceptional! 5/5 -
(49 traveler reviews)

  • 5 of 5

We were absolutely delighted with our 5 night stay at Debbie and Philip's lovely flat. It is incredibly comfortable and so tastefully decorated. They have thought of all of your needs and made us so very comfortable. Debbie is a Scottish version(and much warmer and funny) of the United States Martha Stewart. They have provided so much more than just the flat, there are maps, tea, biscuits, etc. We hope to come back for an extended stay in the future.

Owner's Response: Hi Tricia, OMG - the Martha Stewart comparison made me smile - and I am incredibly flattered - thank you. If only you saw my own apartment!... :) I used to watch snippets on Oprah many moons ago and wished I could be an assistant on that show! Anyway, I digress - am so pleased you had a good stay, and that you felt at home, comfortable, happy and cosy. That is our principal aim, always. I look forward to, hopefully, welcoming you back and perhaps a 'girls' day' out while you are here. It is lovely that, over the last 12 years, we have become friends with some great people - who have come here year after year. We are deeply touched by this and continue to strive to always improve, wherever possible. Hope to see you in 2017 - all good wishes for a peaceful and happy Christmas, and good health and joy in 2017. xx

How We Hated To Leave

  • 5 of 5

We have travelled to many places and stayed in quite a number of VRBO rentals but none that can compare to this one. Debbie was there to great us and walk us through the apartment to explain where things were and how they worked. Everything you could want or need for your stay was included from slippers to scotch. Philip is so knowledgable of all the Scottish history and was more than willing to spend time talking with us. One thing they did for us was to recommend a driver for hire and Mike was fantastic. The building is located close enough to the city centre that you can be there in about 10 minutes by bus. This is a walkable area. We highy recommend this unit.

Wonderful Two Week Stay @ Pilrig House

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in the Garden Apartment at the Pilrig House for two weeks at the end of July and the beginning of August. The apartment was so spacious, modern and spotlessly clean, supplied with everything one could possibly need or want. Debbie and Philip are wonderful hosts - very knowledgeable about the area/attractions & transportation. It is about a 1/2 hour walk to city center but this was not an issue for us. Bus routes are very close by as well as local grocery stores. It was nice to come back to the quiet area of Leith and the apartment to get a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. We were so happy with our accommodation and would definitely recommend the Pilrig House to family and friends!

Perfect Pilrig

  • 5 of 5

Having read all the reviews concerning Pilrig House we couldn't wait to arrive for our two week holiday, and we were certainly not disappointed!

We stayed in the Garden Apartment which was absolutely beautiful - had everything we needed at top quality standard and maintained to perfection.

The owners, Debbie and Philip, were so welcoming and informative - nothing was too much trouble. Philip indeed is the fount of all knowledge when it comes to the history of the area and ideas for trips out, thus making the most of the time spent there.

We loved being at Pilrig House so much, and there is so much to see in and around Edinburgh, we booked again for next year, but this time trying the Park Apartment.

Absolute Perfection

  • 5 of 5

If it were possible to give the Pilrig House more than 5 stars, we would. We have travelled, extensively throughout the world, renting houses and apartments, and have never been as pleased and impressed as we were with the accommodations and hosts as we were with the Pilrig House. The only negative is that we think that our future lodgings will pale in comparison to the Pilrig House. The apartment was spotlessly clean, furnished beautifully and fully equipped to meet every possible need. The location was perfect, too. It was outside of the city, in a park, and within walking distance to all of the main attractions in Edinburgh. A large supermarket and good restaurants are just a few blocks away. Debbie and Philip were warm, friendly and helpful. Philip offered to drive us to different places during our stay and had great stories to share about Edinburgh’s history.

We could list all of the supplies that were available in our apartment, but all we need to say is that it had every possible item anyone would ever need!

We loved our visit to Edinburgh and will always remember it as one of our best trips.
