Property Details

Updated: Jul 23, 2016
1 Bedroom sleeps 2 in Queen Bed

There’s no place like home. There’s nothing like the warm, welcoming feeling that greets you at the door after a long day at the office. So why sacrifice that feeling when you’re vacationing?

ErehwonRetreat has become a Tampa landmark that epitomizes the charm, simplicity and history of the Roarding '20. You will find exacting cleaning standards, and a clear focus on the Arts and Craft movement. Erehwon is a pleasant throwback to where people grew up, knew their neighbors, sat on their front porch and everybody talked to everybody else. Our guests continually comment on how many neighbors they meet while walking in our neighborhood.

Everything is beautifully arranged; colorful, subtle, and uplifting. We have a fully equipped kitchen allows for eating in after a long day of meetings or outings. Dine and relax in front of your flat screen LCD TV with over 70 complimentary DVD from our extensive movie library, or keep in touch with co-workers, friends and family members with free wireless Internet access.

During HIGH & PEAK SEASON, we select Sunday as our turn over day in order to link with weekly arrival/departure of the Holland America Cruise Line “Veendam” and Norwegian Cruise Line “Star” to the Port of Tampa. Due to the popularity and frequent return of guests,we primarily rent in 7 - 14 night stays. When booking for periods less than a week more 30 days in advance , we may advise that we need to place your request on a wait list. If the cottage books for a week during your wait list period we advise you at that time. During HIGH & PEAK SEASON first time visits are limited to 7 nights in order to serve our loyal regulars.

Our guests range in age from 26-74 years, and who seek both a smoke free and pet free retreat. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, pregnancy, familial status, disability or religion. However, due to the age of the cottage and preservation of its historic design we are not barrier free.

Erehwon Retreat is licensed under the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation/Division of Hotels and Restaurants and registered with the Florida Department of Revenue and City of Tampa Business Tax Division.

Pack Light: We have a coffee bean grinder, French Press pot in the event you don't want to take a four block walk to Starbucks. Pur water filter at kitchen sink and check out the sundries page on ErehwonRetreat branded website for all that comes with the cottage (see Sundries) or things folks love about the area (see Location). You'll find everything from spices to maple syrup, toaster, pots and pans and pot holders, plus orange juice, half and half cream, milk and cereal to get you started, Publix is just a four blocks away for grocery needs, housekeeping every third day and a massage therapist who comes to the cottage.

About the Owner

Guests consistently describe in their property reviews the number of excellent recommendations he provided during their visit. My commitment to service and unique experiences comes from his life and career.

Following service in the US Navy, your host enjoyed a management and fundraising career in the performing arts including landmark organizations The Guthrie Theatre, The New York City Center Joffrey Ballet, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Cincinnati Ballet Company and DanceAspen. He continues to serve in capacities of management and fundraising consulting and his persistence in getting things done is legendary. This combination of management and the arts made him curious about history and people and comfortable with the ambiguity of new.

He's been a sailor since turning a teenager, and armed with his Naval service as a navigator he and his family spent a year sailing all of the Great Lakes and the route of Columbus 500 years later.

He is also like concierges around the world, he knows the ins and outs of traveling. If you were to examine his various passports he's traveled to Iceland, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Austria, Germany, Belarus, Bulgaria, Greece (Crete, Rhodes, Hydra), Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Cuba. Since reaching semi-retirement, he has hiked in over 100 Florida State or County parks and preserves. With his eclectic worldly and local Florida knowledge, he assures a unique experience.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you doesn't see like enough to express my gratitude for the opportunity to experience Erehwon - I would like to say that I believe Erehwon found me. In making my plans to come to Tampa to deliver my son to UT, I had so many options. I knew I didn't want a chain hotel or a resort, and then my google search popped up on Erehwon Retreat. Yes, this would be a perfect spot to helpme with the emotional task of moving my son 1,300 miles from home. A blessed 'Retreat' this week has been. A step back in time with such a peaceful decor, colors, pictures, even the Arts and Craft era tile in the fence. Thank you for your hospitality and our dear chats, I so enjoyed them. I hope that you will get to meet Kyle and the rest of my family. My best wishes for continued success with your venture. It's a little piece of heaven. Peace and Belessings

Amazing property and worth the money!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very beautiful! The background makes it 10x better! Location was good, but we stayed at the beach a good bit of the time. Henry is very respectful and helps as much as he can. I would visit again and recommend it to others! Very lovely property and well taken care of!

Great Retreast

  • 5 of 5

Very nice cottage with all the conveniences one might need. Henry was a very good host and informed us about the area and recommended places to see. Was vey helpful in providing insight into properties as we were interested in a possible move to the area. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a nice place to stay.

Convenience at a click

  • 4 of 5

If you are looking to visit Tampa for a short stay and want the accessibility and ease of being close to all that Tampa has to offer - this cottage can be just what you are looking for.

My husband and I utilized Uber for most of our stay - which to travel to Ybor City and Downtown Tampa - was a breeze and relatively cheap. If you'd prefer to rent a car for the day - there is an Enterprise Rent-a-Car that is in walking distance.

Upon your arrival, Henry has prepared an abundance of literature on the 'things to do' in the area. The literature provides suggestions on dining, hiking, beaches, etc. You'll have enough to keep you busy!

There are many restaurants and dining options nearby. However, this also extends as you look to travel more. Beaches galore - plenty of opportunity to catch a tan and to relax!

I know that many of the other reviews have already highlighted this, but the bed was very comfortable. Henry has taken time to add many upgrades to elevate your stay (ie. nice linens, towels, and robes).

If you're looking to lounge on a couch in the evening and watch the news before you go to bed - the set up does not comfortably allow for this. However, there is wifi and you're able to catch whatever you'd like on your laptop or phone.

Overall, we would rate our stay a 3.5.

Owner's Response: Since opening, the cottage had been booked 1339 nights prior to Erika's check in. The median age of our guests is 51.5 years of age. So it was special to welcome this great young couple in their late 20's or early 30's having their first experience with staying in a vacation rental. The cottage had just received it's annual repainting as well as restocking of bed linens and towels following High and Peak seasons in which we have not one empty night in six months. Unlike the annual winter guest who has annually visit Florida for a week or two who instantly remark on how unique it is to find a fully stocked kitchen (milk, OJ, whole bean coffee, Twining's tea, real maple syrup, pancake mix, cereals) with custom made Tea Olive soap, coconut body lotion, make-up removal pads, Q tips, bug spray. Thanks Erika for taking the time to share your impression. I hope you will return to discover all the natural world within an hour's drive of the cottage.

a little jewel in the heart of Tampa

  • 4 of 5

If you are looking for a little getaway in a charming historic property in the heart of Tampa, look no more. Wake up and prepare a french coffee and sit on the front porch enjoying the early morning quiet in this delightful tree lined neighborhood. Take a walk in the neighborhood and pass one beautiful old home after another with mature landscaping and eye pleasing construction. Stroll over to the coffee house around the corner to read the paper and enjoy an expresso. Your cottage is in a wonderful location for many local attractions. I spent the day at the Lowry Park Zoo just a few miles away. When I arrived, Henry was there with a warm smile and a thorough introduction to my new little home for the week. Any questions I had, he had the answers. His information book held much useful information. At the end of an energetic day , it was great to come back to my little nest and curl up to watch the news and then one of his 70 very fine DVDs. Bed was cozy and comfortable. Enjoy this bit of classic Tampa history and explore your surroundings. You won't be disappointed.

We stayed at Henry's 'cottage for two,' for six days while holidaying in Florida for a month. Nowhere did the description and the experience of the place match more accurately. A well equipped, clean home away from home. Henry, the host is most welcoming and with his wealth of knowledge of Tampa and its surroundings we felt very well taken care of. At the same time, both he and his guardian cat gave plenty of room for privacy. His recommendations for where to go or eat were never disappointing. As we were travelling towards Tampa on the day of our arrival he sent recommendations of what to do or see along the way, it being a rainy day. Now that is hospitality!

With recommendations to your readers, happy holidaying!

Owner's Response: Thanks Will, Always appreciate when guests get home and take a moment to reflect on their travel and experiences. We've reached the point where many hotels and Condo rentals have become indistinguishable from one another, and you know our aim is to be distinctly different! My philosophy is a rather simple and old-fashioned one; you will be treated as our guest and we shall do everything we can to make you comfortable while sharing what all was happening in America in 1923. It was during my travels in the US Navy that as the anchor chain was being hauled I recognized many of my fellow crew tended to spend "liberty" walking along streets that they had no real understanding of, and too often their time ashore was remembered as fairly meaningless, whereas, I would do extensive historic research before our port arrival, and would happen to know that such-and-such a poet was incarcerated inside an asylum on this street or that such-and-such an invention happened here or that such-and-such a composer created a masterpiece in this apartment house. I realized then and impart today, all of the little stories, that make the place that I live much richer. Since the bungalow and cottage that comprise Erehwon Retreat were built 58 years following the Civil War and 3 years after Women got the right to vote, I am always hoping guests are not walking down mundane, dull, everyday streets anymore, that they are walking down fabulous avenues full of wonderful ideas, amazing people and their incredible stories. Hope a bit of spring has arrived in Manitoba.

Cosy cottage for two!

  • 5 of 5

Everything was as pictured and described. We can't think of one thing that Henry overlooked or that needed improving. We spent a week there and had no trouble reaching the cottage from the airport by HART (30 from Airport, 1 from Marian station). When we were ready to explore surrounding area (beaches, Clearwater, Dunedin, Tarpon Springs etc)Enterprise Car Rental was just down the street. UBER also readily accessible. The neighborhood was an amazing collection of California style Craftsman homes well maintained and lovilingly restored.

Owner's Response: Jamie and Margerite, Thanks for posting. Every season we have guests coming from Canada (St. John's, Montreal, Quebec City, Moncton, Toronto, Winnepeg, and Calgary). In the past three seasons we look to see Halifax among our guests. Having sailed most of my life including to Nova Scotia, I particularly enjoyed our conversations about Nova Scotia and your introducing me to the Roue 20 designed by the naval architect of the famouse "Bluenose." Appreciate your taking the time to review your stay. Best Wishes for fair wind and a following sea. Henry

From the Owner

During my childhood our family lived in a Bungalow on S. Las Robles Ave in Pasadena, CA. Later we moved to an apartment building in New York City overlooking Central Park. My late mother reminded me that I always talked of the Bungalow and encouraged me to consider restoring one at some point in my life. Mothers always know best.

From the Owner

Erehwon Retreat is landscaped with native plants which have been growing in Florida for thousands of years without human intervention. We are committed to providing the natural food, shelter, and nesting plants of local wildlife. Visiting in fall and spring, you will see hundreds of birds, butterflies, and a wide variety of crucially important insect pollinators looking for our native plants for predictable sources of nectar, berries, insects and firm branches in which to hide their nests.
