About the property

1 Bedroom sleeps 2 in Queen Bed

With a romantic history that matches its arts and crafts architecture, Erehwon Retreat Cottage welcomes you to enjoy a quiet and secluded getaway in Tampa.

This hidden gem is like your own personal dollhouse, the cottage is nestled under an old growth canopy with an adorable, welcoming front porch, perfect for watching the world go by.

In 2010, the cottage underwent major renovations, transforming it into a cozy place to relax and unwind. From the minute you step inside the front door, you won’t stop “oohing” and “ahhing” over all the 1920 Arts and Craft touches.

Head into the bead board living room for some down time, where you can kick back on the couch in front of the TV. The cottage’s DVD collection rivals a video rental store, catering to all movie night tastes! If you prefer quieter entertainment, curl up in the leather chair with a good book or one of the many American Bungalow magazines found around the cottage. Or truly unwind and soothe any weary muscles with a Swedish massage; we have a massage therapist that makes house calls for our guests.

When it comes time for some sustenance, the comfy kitchen includes everything you’ll need to cook up breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between. When you raid the fridge for snacks you won’t go hungry; we stocked it with fresh Florida orange juice, milk, coffee and plenty of condiments and cooking necessities.

As the sun sets and the weather cools, head out to the deck, shared with the adjacent bungalow, and enjoy time with new friends and the property cat, Thomas!

At bedtime, head to the back of the cottage where you'll find the bedroom complete with arts and craft décor, queen bed and luxury bedding; all you need a restful night’s sleep. On your way to bed, stop by the hallway storage closet and wrap yourself in a fluffy white robe and matching slippers. Even the bathroom oozes charm with pedestal sink, walk-in shower, luxury towels, custom-made tea olive soap and high-end bath products.

Part of the Old Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa, our cottage is conveniently located close to numerous shops, attractions and restaurants. Part of the National and State Register of Historic Places, the neighborhood started out as cattle grazing land and citrus groves, but by 1920'a grew into Tampa’s first suburb.

From the minute you arrive, the charm of Erehwon Retreat Cottage invites you to come in and stay awhile. Everything about our cottage--from the historic décor to the secluded setting to the smallest details--welcomes you home.

Erehwon Retreat is licensed under the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation/Division of Hotels and Restaurants and registered with the Florida Department of Revenue and City of Tampa Business Tax Division.

Pack Light: We have a coffee bean grinder, French Press pot in the event you don't want to take a four block walk to Starbucks. Pur water filter at kitchen sink and check out the sundries page on ErehwonRetreat branded website for all that comes with the cottage (see Sundries) or things folks love about the area (see Location). You'll find everything from spices to maple syrup, toaster, pots and pans and pot holders, plus orange juice, half and half cream, milk and cereal to get you started, Publix is just a four blocks away for grocery needs, housekeeping every third day and a massage therapist who comes to the cottage.

About Henry Young, Jr.

Guests consistently describe in their property reviews the number of excellent recommendations he provided during their visit. My commitment to service and unique experiences comes from his life and career.

Following service in the US Navy, your host enjoyed a management and fundraising career in the performing arts including landmark organizations The Guthrie Theatre, The New York City Center Joffrey Ballet, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Cincinnati Ballet Company and DanceAspen. He continues to serve in capacities of management and fundraising consulting and his persistence in getting things done is legendary. This combination of management and the arts made him curious about history and people and comfortable with the ambiguity of new.

He's been a sailor since turning a teenager, and armed with his Naval service as a navigator he and his family spent a year sailing all of the Great Lakes and the route of Columbus 500 years later.

He is also like concierges around the world, he knows the ins and outs of traveling. If you were to examine his various passports he's traveled to Iceland, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Austria, Germany, Belarus, Bulgaria, Greece (Crete, Rhodes, Hydra), Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Cuba. Since reaching semi-retirement, he has hiked in over 100 Florida State or County parks and preserves. With his eclectic worldly and local Florida knowledge, he assures a unique experience.

Why Henry Young, Jr. chose Tampa

During my childhood our family lived in a Bungalow on S. Las Robles Ave in Pasadena, CA. Later we moved to an apartment building in New York City overlooking Central Park. My late mother reminded me that I always talked of the Bungalow and encouraged me to consider restoring one at some point in my life. Mothers always know best.

What makes this cottage unique

Erehwon Retreat is landscaped with native plants which have been growing in Florida for thousands of years without human intervention. We are committed to providing the natural food, shelter, and nesting plants of local wildlife. Visiting in fall and spring, you will see hundreds of birds, butterflies, and a wide variety of crucially important insect pollinators looking for our native plants for predictable sources of nectar, berries, insects and firm branches in which to hide their nests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you doesn't see like enough to express my gratitude for the opportunity to experience Erehwon - I would like to say that I believe Erehwon found me. In making my plans to come to Tampa to deliver my son to UT, I had so many options. I knew I didn't want a chain hotel or a resort, and then my google search popped up on Erehwon Retreat. Yes, this would be a perfect spot to helpme with the emotional task of moving my son 1,300 miles from home. A blessed 'Retreat' this week has been. A step back in time with such a peaceful decor, colors, pictures, even the Arts and Craft era tile in the fence. Thank you for your hospitality and our dear chats, I so enjoyed them. I hope that you will get to meet Kyle and the rest of my family. My best wishes for continued success with your venture. It's a little piece of heaven. Peace and Belessings

Owner's Response: Very happy that you had a wonderful time. You didn't let any grass grow under your feet, you really saw the Central part of Florida and got as far S as Naples and the East Coast and yet found your way home every night during your two weeks with us. Would be delighted to see you if your travel plans call for Tampa in the future. Best

We had a great four day stay at this adorable cottage. Thanks to Henry for being a wonderful host. He supplied everything we could need in the cottage and his historical info and tips of where to eat were perfect. We hope to be back again sometime in the near future.

Very cute 1930's cottage

We enjoyed meeting Henry and found we had many things in common. He was a perfect host, around when you needed him, not obtrusive.

The cottage is small, but had everything we needed. The cupboards and fridge were stocked with items to get us started.

There are many nice restaurants nearby. Our favorite was the Rooster and the Till. You can sit at the bar and watch the chefs at work.

We rode our bikes down to the river and enjoyed the trails there. We also rode the Courtney Campbell trail that goes along the Bay. It's really nice, but we were against the wind on the ride back which was challenging for us old folks.

The week was relaxing and fun until we discovered our bikes were stolen the last night we were there. We had a supposedly burglar proof lock, but they were able to break it. So if you have bikes with you, I would take them inside at night.

Owner's Response: Hi Barbara and Roger, The Eurostyle in-ground bike rack we placed in service is buried in three feet of concrete. Since opening we've rented 2016 nights and this was the first robbery we've ever had. Since your incident I have purchased two New York Ubar Kryptonite bike locks for overnight storage by future guests. No question your cable lock works perfectly for day use but clearly it was easily popped open and there was no need to cut your cable by whoever stole your bikes. Correction, the cottage was built in 1923. As you know I was profoundly sorry and stunned by your loss. Glad you enjoyed the cottage.

Smallish bungalow good for a week; great dining in the area!

Great neighborhood and restaurants. Felt very safe. Enjoyed going for walks and looking at the different homes. The tiny bungalow was perfect for 2 people - super kitchen, smallish bathroom was made for only 1. Nice decor. No internet in the bedroom or kitchen held us back from working. But luckily we brought our own modem as we had a lot of work to do in addition to going back and forth to our new home. The host who went in and out of the house to check on the place and make sure we were comfortable. He was good with making suggestions on where to go and what to see, but learned quickly we were there for work purposes as well as closing on our new home; and not to sightsee. We would stay there again.

Owner's Response: Michelle, Thanks for your note. Of the 268 nights we hosted in the cottage in 2016, you visit was the only stay in which the purpose was other than vacation and we remember what it's like moving a long distance and waiting for contractors and moving vans. Clearly stressful when three hours after check out you message that your husband is on the way back to pick up all the clothes you left in the hall closet. Hopefully, you all are settled in and loving Carollwood.

Peaceful Urban Retreat

  • 5 of 5

It's hard to know where to begin with the superlatives regarding Henry's perfect gem of a cottage in Tampa. The place is very much as pictured: thoughtfully decorated, well-equipped, in a charming neighborhood of '20s bungalows. What the photos online don't fully convey is all the small extras that make staying here like a trip to visit a good friend. Henry not only provides far more than the average kitchen supplies (fresh milk and oj, spices, teas, coffee, etc. etc.) but has gone the extra mile in thinking about other supplies you might have forgotten - like bug spray or nail polish remover! The bed is comfortable, bathroom is small but perfectly thought out and the shower has better water pressure than mine at home. And the selection of movies was so eclectic and wonderful my friend and I interrupted our marathon talk-fest to watch one we couldn't resist. Our only regret was not being in Tampa long enough to take full advantage of the wealth of local info our thoughtful host provided - in the form of hiking, boating, biking guides, maps to local and not-so-local attractions, and a patient willingness to be grilled for more advice any time. Henry is a perfect host and we couldn't have enjoyed our stay more.

Owner's Response: Elizabeth, Of course since I curate the films, I am eager to find out which grabbed your attention. Enjoyed having you and Mary with us. Hope my suggestions to see in Gainsville were "spot on."
