We are a couple who live in the Seattle area and try to escape the big city to our cabin in the Methow Valley as often as possible. We are experienced in tackling remodeling projects and were particularly drawn to this 100-year-old cabin for its rich history, beautiful scenery and potential to make it a home-away-from-home.
Tony Halstead purchased this cabin in 2004
When visiting our cabin in spring, summer and fall, we love the fragrant pine smell while hiking our own trail that leads to the main MVSTA. Of course, the best part of visiting in the winter is the skiing. The snow is incomparable for cross country and skate skiing and the many miles of trails provide serene skiing with rarely bumping into other skiers. Our favorite haunts for shopping and dining are a short drive away to Winthrop. We also like going to the luxurious Sun Mountain Lodge for Sunday brunch.
This old house was built in 1906 as the main ranch house on the Big Valley Ranch, which was then located three miles west of Winthrop. In 1990 the building was moved to this location and placed on a daylight basement foundation and remodeled as a guest house. We bought the cabin in 2004 and remodeled further to our taste, including the conveniences of modern living without losing its character. The yard is suitable for children and dogs. We hope you like it.
The house set up was great for 4 adults and two kids. The owners were very friendly and attentive--they answered our multiple questions very quickly. A hot tub would be nice. Heat worked great, it was very cold outside.
Property was as described and very nice. Only thing is GPS will send you to the wrong property and this one isnt marked clearly especially if you are driving at night. Best way to find it is that it shares the driveway of the "cute cabin " white sign. Very easy to see.
Clean, larger inside than what the photo shows. Community trail easy to follow and find right off the driveway. Street address led us to some other random property (google maps) however by following the driving directions from owner it was easy to find. Cell and internet service spotty in the area so have the info up before heading out in the car. Wifi easy to find/connect to. Nicely located between Mazama and Winthrop, lots to do in the area.
Great yard for dogs though the fence could use a little TLC. Berm was great for keeping out sites and sounds of Highway 20. Cabin was cool on 90 degree days and easy to regulate temperatures. Accommodations great although no washer/dryer. Would stay here again. Beds very comfortable we found the cabin very clean on arrival.
My family of 7 adults and 2 dogs had a wonderful experience at this cabin. There were comfortable beds, a great fenced in yard, lots of kitchen supplies, and well-equipped bathroom amenities. Everything was clean and tidy. The large table with lots of chairs made a great dinner gathering spot. The gas BBQ worked well, and we spent lots of time on the deck. We found the trail down to the main Community Trail system, and that made for fantastic walks along the river and over the suspension bridge. We loved that every window and door were fully screened, as the mosquitoes came out in force during our stay. It was a fantastic getaway spot for our group. We enjoyed several excursions into Winthrop for wine tasting, ice cream, and eating at the brewery. We also took several beautiful hikes in the area.
The owners were very relaxed and easy to work with. The space is comfortable, casual, large, and in a good location to get to Mazama and local sites.
