About John & Lesley Tarbell
We are your hosts, John and Lesley - our primary residence is in Massachusetts but our haven is here on Lake Fairlee. After renting for 5 years, and realizing that this Lake was the ONE for us, we bought 'Birch Point Lane Cottages'. It was a dream come true for us. The property consists of three structures: the 2 rental cottages and our own 'Lodge' which was re-built by John. Lodge has taken some time to complete and has an interesting history, please ask us while you are visiting. John has also put his touch on the cabins, making all the cabinets in Alpine's kitchen, building a new deck, installing new flooring, and many other updates are John's handy-work. It is our goal to be nearby and available as 'caretakers' but far enough away to let you have your own Lake Fairlee vacation and memories.
John & Lesley Tarbell purchased this Cottage in 2011
Why John & Lesley Tarbell chose Thetford
Lake Fairlee is easy to fall in love with. It is a nice size lake, just about 3 miles long, a clean 'spring-fed' body of water nestled in the beautiful Vermont mountains. We are fortunate to have many traditional overnight camps as our neighbors ( you will hear reveille). The surrounding communities of Fairlee and Thetford are quiet, sleepy-towns and represent quintessential Vermont. But not too far away, you have the more 'bustling' towns of Hanover, NH and Woodstock VT. There is plenty to do, just as there is plenty of relaxing to do. Research online the lake and it's surrounding camps, towns, plus even more about us. Or our Face book page Birch Point Lane Cottages, Lake Fairlee
What makes this Cottage unique
Birch Point Lane Cottages are unique for their stunning views and 'camp-like' feel. If you have been on the Lake, than you have probably noticed Lakeside cottage - it sits directly on the water. And Alpine is perched up on the hill offering incredible western views of the lake. When we are at Lake Fairlee we immediately exhale and relax. Adding to all the visual beauty is the symphony of nature's sounds to your ears. The call of the loon, the birds singing, even the fish jumping - make this spot even more special. We just can't wait to share it with you and your family!!

Return to Paradise
Well maintained, beautiful setting, every consideration given to needs of guests, interesting accouterments, beautiful wood working throughout
we had a great time at this lake property! Cabins have all the essentials + lots of extras! Perfect for our needs. Canoe, kayaks, paddle board. Beautiful views of lake, loons, great blue heron, gliders, + 3 hot air balloons. Lake is super clear. Lesley and John are great/friendly and very accommodating. We had a wonderful stay!
The Enchanted Cottages on Lake Fairlee
Beautifully situated on Lake Fairlee. The adorable cabins were warm, and cozy and adorned to please the senses. We left this morning, but felt a pang of sadness to leave such a lovely haven of peace and total comfort! A memorable time was had by all!
Thank you so very much John and Lesley!!!!
Frolicking with the loons
If you appreciate a lakeside get away with superior attention to detail and comfortable lodgings, give this property your full attention. It is perfect for an extended family or even 2 families to stay and either enjoy the amenities of the home itself or drive around the beautiful country side. The owners have painstakingly restored two cottages on a hill that drops off into a pristine lake in Northern Vermont. The owners are friendly and accessible (their son equally so) and the two cottages are well stocked with any cooking item you would need plus plenty of staples to stay home and prepare a meal. In fact the cutting knives were the sharpest I have ever used including my own kitchen. There is even a pontoon boat you can rent for a very reasonable fee to explore the lake by motor boat or use their kayaks or rowboat that are also available. My biggest regret is that we didn't get to stay longer. The only warning I would share is to remember these are true summer lake cottages so the rooms are small (and adequate) and you have to be creative with storage of hanging items. In addition, in the main cottage, the wall does not go to the ceiling between the two bedrooms. All perfectly in tune with the setting but worth mentioning. Thank you John and Chris for a wonderful stay and we hope to return some day in the not too distant future.
Piece, quiet, tranquility, and family time. Just what the doctor ordered.
Waking up every morning to piece and quiet was wonderful. This was followed by making breakfast looking out over the lake with hot air balloons ascending into the air almost every day. In fact, on one day the balloon put on quite the show, dropping down to lake level several times to the point the basket was in the water.
The lake itself is beautiful and the perfect size, with very limited boat traffic and no annoying jet ski's. We opted to rent the pontoon boat and super glad we did, as it was a pleasure heading up and down the lake daily with the family (including the dogs). The boat is well taken care of and the perfect size for an amateur captain like me.
The other popular activity was kayaking, which we had never done until our week at the Tarbell's. This ended up being a daily event and everything was provided including life jackets. Heading around the coast line looking at turtles, fish, and ducks was great. One day a loon popped up right next to my wife!
John and Leslie are super and were always watching out for us. One day when we decided to spend most of the day on the pontoon boat they got worried and came out looking for us with water for the dogs, thinking we had broke down. We were just enjoying the day and lost track of time, but knowing they had our back was great.
Get your fishing poles ready, as we caught bass, pickerel, bull head, perch, and more sun fish than we could count. Our daughter enjoyed the sun fish the most, which was great bonding time. Although she is still bragging that she caught more than me, which happens when Dad needs to worm the hooks and take the fish off.
There is a great little store close by that has all the essentials and was almost a nightly stop for ice cream.
If you have never tried an outdoor shower, get ready, as it was super relaxing after a long day on the water. Enjoy with a glass of wine.
Speaking of wine, while you need to bring you own, everything else you need to enjoy is provided. Glasses, stoppers, bottle openers, and even cute little wine glass sandals.
Other amenities included air conditioning, good Wi-Fi, satellite TV, gas grills (yes two of them), fire pit, and plenty of family games to play.
Disconnect from city life and don't hesitate in making a reservation with Leslie and John. You will not be disappointed.
