Why Kathryn Swift chose Hope
Hobbs Pond is one of the most pristine and quietest lakes in the area with wonderful swimming, boating, fishing, loons and other wildlife. Firefly Cottage sits under tall mature trees and offers cooling shade on warm summer days. You will experience privacy, peace and quiet when you want it, yet you are still close to many things to do and see. Camden is just a 10 minute drive away with many activities, restaurants, shops and galleries. Acadia National Park is a wonderful day trip. We are the ideal place to vacation in the Maine woods, offering both privacy and peace while still close to many activities and unique points of interest.
What makes this Cottage unique
The lakeside deck is a wonderful place to sit by the lake, watch the kids swim, have a drink and offers gorgeous views of the Camden Hills. Loons abound in the lake and you will enjoy their calls. Take the kayaks out on the lake to get a closer look at these beautiful birds and their chicks. Our hammock is the perfect place to take a nap. The cottage is close enough to our home (2 miles) that we can be of assistance to our guests if needed, while still offering you privacy. Firefly Cottage sits in a quiet, peaceful location yet we are very close to all the activities our area offers.

Great Getaway Cabin
This cozy cabin is tucked away at the base of a mile long hill on a medium-sized lake with loons, about 20 minutes from Camden. During Columbus Day week the fall foliage in this area is at absolute peak! The plumbing, hot water, wifi, and heat at the cabin worked perfectly. The queen size bed was fine. Kathy was nearby if we needed anything. Our cell phones (Consumer Cellular) did not get any reception there. The stairs down from the bedrooms are quite steep, so I would not recommend the upstairs for small children. We really enjoyed our 4-day stay.
This is a beautiful property. It is quite a drive in on a gravel road and you have to be careful driving as to not scrape the bottom of your car if it is low (ours is low). The properties are well marked. The walk down to the pond is lovely although not easy if you have mobility issues (which we knew). We could not stay our second night because I could not physically do the stairs with ease and the bedrooms were on the second floor. I should have checked that. Overall a beautiful spot. (We didn’t get to hear loons😞)
This is Maine and when you stay with us you get the wonderful Maine experience tucked in the woods next to a pristine lake. I'm happy you found our property beautiful. The partially paved road is a mile in to our home. There are several other houses along the drive. I'm concerned you booked our home when you have difficulty using stairs and wish you had discussed this with us before booking. The short walk to the lake shore follows a path under the trees and there are some tree roots that need to be stepped over but this should be expected when in the Maine woods. None of the roots are more than a few inches high. Firefly Cottage is a great choice for families, couples and active seniors. I'm sorry the loons were not vocal the night you spent with us. This summer we had a loon couple and chick living near our part of the lake. We watched the chick grow, learn to fish and fly all under the watchful eyes of it's parents. It was great fun to see.
Cozy cottage in the woods with pond waterfront
Cute decor, kitchen well-equipped, bed comfortable, excellent grill. Enjoyed both decks. Open stairway to second floor. Bathroom on first floor. Would definitely stay here again.
The cottage was clean and organized. All of the cottages we rented on this trip had 2:00 or 3:00 check-in, so I thought this was a little late (4:00) But the biggest problem was that there is no mention of the bedrooms being on the second floor with some pretty steep stairs to climb. One of us had to sleep on the futon (that was broken and couldn't be opened) because of the stairs. I have looked over the description several times and the only thing I have found is that the cottage isn't wheelchair accessible. Not the same thing.
I am very sorry our house was not suitable for your needs. We have people of all ages stay with us. We are in our late 60s and we also use the house frequently. Many of our older inquirers, who might have mobility issues, ask us about the lay out of the house before they book. We do not know the folks who book with us so cannot let you know if our house is unsuitable for your particular needs, unless we are asked. We are always honest with our answers because we do not want our guests to be uncomfortable. We also do not advertise the futon, just because it cannot be opened. We use it as the living room sofa and it is very comfortable for that use. We do advertise one queen bed and two twin beds and yes, they are on the second floor, as advertised. I do wish you had asked these questions before you booked with us. Also, the 4:00 check in time is the norm for this area. We do need time to clean the house properly for your comfort. Depending on how the previous guest left the house, sometimes we need extra time to clean. If someone would like to check in earlier, just ask and if we can accommodate that, we're happy to allow you to check in sooner. Again, it pays to speak up and tell us your needs. We are all about our guests having a happy and comfortable stay. I am glad to hear you found our home clean and organized. It is also newly redecorated and updated. We are also a great value and you get a home on the lake at a price better than staying at a local hotel. We also offer kayaks, lake toys (noodles and squirt guns), a grill, lakeside seating, a swim float, peace and quiet and privacy. Yet we are still very close to local attractions and activities. We think our place is pretty special if it suits your needs.
Sweet little cottage on a lovely pond. The water is lovely. The deck by the water was wonderful.
Thank you Laurel. We love our deck next to the lake for watching wildlife, sipping our morning coffee and launching the kayaks. Our lake is one of the quieter, more pristine lakes in the area and supports many loons, eagles, owls and other special birds.
A wonderful end of summer stay
Firefly cottage was just as I had hoped it would be. We didn't even have to bring our fishing poles. The cottage was comfortable and peaceful and we enjoyed sitting by the pond watching birds (and even a bright yellow seaplane). For relaxation, peace, and nature - this cabin was ideal. The only downside was the fact that there are so many trees, the property got very little sunshine. The path from the cottage to the water is a bit treacherous, otherwise we would have spent more time by the water. I would definitely return to this cottage again.
Thank you for your review and I'm very happy you had a wonderful visit. Yes, this is Maine and our lot is wooded with wonderful tall trees, as you can see in our pictures. In the summer these trees provide a lot of cooling shade. The deck by the lake gets morning sunshine and the swim float has sun all day. Federal shoreland zoning laws do not allow us to cut trees within 100 feet of the lake. The path to the lake is easily navigated unless you have mobility issues. None of the roots on our path to the lake are over 4 inches high but there are some that need to be stepped over. We hope you understand that legally we cannot remove any trees or their roots.
