About Steve and Keala
Aloha! We are Keala ( Lassiter) and Steve ( Zoll). Both of us were raised here on the Big Island. We grew up together here in Hawaii. Together we share this wonderful country cottage. We also have two beautiful grown daughters! As life moved forward and changes were made, we continued to remained great and dear friends. We both live on the same property. The main home is where currently Steve lives with his lovely girlfriend named Deb. She often will help host when Steve and I are away . I come back and forth from my travels and check in several times throughout the year. Steve is a great handy man and can attend to anything that is needed during your stay. We manage our cottage along with our four legged love-able dogs along with chickens and horses and a few sheep.. And we do have a few sunbathing cats laying around. Being brought up with animals and coming from a ranching family, it is great to offer the lifestyle that we have lived. Living life to it's fullest, and enjoying every day as we all should. We welcome you to come and stay to experience the Aloha that we have to share. You will leave refreshed, renewed and a longing to return once more....
Steve and Keala purchased this Cottage in 2003
Why Steve and Keala chose Papaikou
This cottage was built for family and friends to visit. Once our friends stayed at Pu'u Moi, we had offers from others who wanted the same experience of the country life, Hawaiian style. Our land has much to offer from green pastures, horses, chickens , sheep, little smiling dogs and waterfalls to rambutan orchids and endless mornings of beautiful sunrises.
What makes this Cottage unique
Being able to stay at this cottage is unique as it is surrounded by pasture land, animals, walking distance to a natural waterfall and pond, gated and no neighbors other than our home which is on the same property. We offer assistance as need to those staying in the cottage, and have respect for privacy as well.

Rainbows & Downpours! Loved it
We had a wonderful stay at this cottage. Perfect for family of four (6yo & 8yo children). The kitchen was well stocked and the pantry had a few extras like olive oil & spices. We grilled out every night. The place was very airy with lots of screened doors/window & fans. Fresh flower clippings on dining room table and in bathroom were a sweet touch. Porch perfect for watching the ocean and approaching micro-storms during the morning/day/eve and shooting stars at night. Loved the nighttime downpours on the tin roof. The pool and hot tub were lovely. The first day we had the place to ourselves as the family was in Kona. The second evening the family was hosting a dinner with friends. We weren't sure if we would feel welcome using the pool area, but they were very gracious, friendly and then moved on with their dinner leaving us to swim and hang out on our own.
The waterfall is a quick walk and is very pretty. Both times we ventured that direction, however, we got REALLY rained on :) and made us too cold to want to swim. Trees, plants and flowers on the property were fun to tour. We composted our food and fed the chickens daily. The puppies Zippy & Spud are adorable and very mellow.
Hilo was a quick 10-15 min drive for provisions.
Honoka'a 45 mins and worth the trip to visit the quaint town and Waipio Valley.
Overall, we loved our well-appointed home away from home, the owners obviously take good care in making it a comfortable stay. Thank you!
We really enjoyed staying here! It was convenient for all the things we wanted to see in the area. And we loved the frog and bird sounds in the early mornings and evenings here. We can't wait to return!
Amazing cottage and pool
The property is just amazing, the pool is beautiful with a fabulous views of the ocean. There are horses, sheep, goats, chickens and a lot of birds ! The waterfall was beautiful and easy to walk down! A beautiful place to stay when you are discovering the island !
The cottage was great! We enjoyed the view from the pool and hot tub. The waterfall was beautiful and easy to walk down to. While it didn't have air-conditioning, the ceiling fans and tabletop fan kept it comfortable. We would stay here again.
Steve's cottage is truly unique. The cottage is simple, but there is something magical about it. To go to bed and see a horse 3 meters away is so good. A beautiful spot on Big Island! The pool is incredibly beautiful and we had a lot of fun. We (two adults and two children) had a lot of fun and enjoyed the time very much.
Beautiful, tucked away setting
Beautiful bucolic setting for this cozy cottage, with relaxed, friendly proprietor and access to a gorgeous, endless, salt-water pool and hot tub. You have to like animals to enjoy it, especially the roosters and birds who will sing you to sleep and crow you awake!
