House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5)
You drive some two hours on the Hana Highway, one of the USA’s most renowned roads, crossing about sixty bridges as you wind along the scenic crags of Haleakala marveling at the waterfalls and looking down on the wide ocean. This spectacular journey takes you to the best place in the world, in our view. Our beaches—there are six of them, all quite different—are never crowded, our ocean and mountain views are everywhere superb, our people delightful, our rain forest is fascinating and our climate perfect. The spiritual feeling of old Hawai’i is hard to find nowadays, yet it permeates Hana, far from tourist hordes. But, if you are looking for a happy place to stay in Hana, you probably know all that already; and that a day trip is not enough. So here’s why to ring us to check out Kolea Cottage as your comfortable, competitively priced, Hana base for a few days or weeks.
Kolea, timber-built in 2003, (permit t20120005) is located a mile from Hana's tiny airport on the lower slopes of the 10,000 foot Mount Haleakala, surrounded by lawn carved out of the forest in a secluded corner of our fruit farm. Our 11-acre estate is bursting with flowers, fruit trees and tropical plants of many sorts. Guests are welcome to fruit from our trees, flowers from the garden and books from our library to read while listening to CDs of Hana musicians or the dawn and dusk bird chorus, enjoying the ocean view from the lanai.
Kolea’s principal bedroom has a queen bed, the second bedroom twin beds or king bed. Soft linen and towels are provided. Bathroom with tub. Covered lanai with seating. In total, 1,200 sq ft of comfortable home. The kitchen area, which has oven, microwave, blender, large fridge-freezer, lovely granite worktops and plenty of storage, is fully equipped with cooking and dining things. The washer and drier are in a closet off the lanai. Kolea has Time Warner cable connected to a 32” flat-screen color TV, CD/DVD player, telephone, internet and wi-fi. Any special requirements—give us a call and we will do our best.
One warning. Hana is not suitable for those who have a bug phobia. We live in a rainforest, and though it's full screened in some bugs and geccos penetrate even the best screening.
We provide beach towels, and we can guide you on the eating possibilities, hiking and many things to do around Hana, including special local events which are often not much publicized. None are more than a short drive away.
Kolea Cottage is named for the beautiful bird that owns the cottage lawn, otherwise known as the Hawaiian golden plover. You may meet her if you are here in the right season, for this remarkable navigator puts on her best plumage and departs in the spring to fly 3,000 miles across the ocean for a summer in Alaska, where she raises a family before returning accurately to our yard in the fall.

The perfect Hana getaway
My wife, two children, and I spent two nights here at the beginning of July. Upon arriving we were greeted by Andrew and Robin who were making sure everything was in order for our stay. As soon as our baggage was put away, we fell into complete relaxation mode on the large covered porch. Views of endless tropical vegetation stretched to a horizon of blue Pacific. The interior was extremely comfortable and the owners have supplied everything you might need. My children loved all the local geckos that like to climb on the window screen in the evening. We found the home to be a perfect base for visiting the Kipahulu district of Haleakala national park, Hamoa Beach, and of course Hana town. We are already imagining our next trip to Maui, and we hope this house will be a part of it once again.
he just did not care what we wanted
It's a cool house but
It's not a fruit farm
There was no fruit given to us even when we asked
We asked to have the twin beds put together
He agreed but din't do it
The drive has a large heave in it that damaged the bottom of our car
No BBQ because it not his station ??????
He came to the door with a michcate in his hands and scared our Freinds
All in all love the house not the Owener
Say what you are going to do
Do what you say
Get off your high horse we all put our pants on one leg at a time
Again nice house
Great place, too bad it was only one night!
The perfect spot for our stay in Hana! Serene setting tucked up in the Hana hills, A unique yurt shaped cottage, tucked in a serene setting in the Hana hills. Our only regret was that we were only there for one night. Looking forward to staying there again in the future. Thanks Andrew!
Relaxing Overnight Visit
We were delighted with our accommodations. The location was easy to access and close to Hana. We have always preferred to spend an overnight in Hana when visiting, and this was an excellent choice. The kitchen was well equipped for our limited needs, the hosts stopped by to make sure everything was suitable, the WiFi was a real plus and overall, we were very comfortable during both our hours awake and asleep. We would highly recommend you considering a stay in this tranquil location.
This is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
The location of the property was amazing. We were very secluded in an emerald green garden. The house was very cozy and warm. There were some ants and a few spiders, but hey, you are in the middle of a jungle. The geckos on the screens at night were also of no concern. We had a resident mongoose also. We loved the cottage and would definitely go there again. Hana is a wonderful place and I can't wait to go again.
