About John Hikade
John and Beth Hikade moved to Blue Hill in the 1970's. They opened the award winning Fire Pond restaurant at that time and stayed in the restaurant business until the early 80's when they started their family. John then turned his focus towards carpentry and became a well known restorer of beautiful the old homes that are so prevalent in the Blue Hill area- their current restaurant is perhaps his greatest masterpiece yet. When their children were older John and Beth decided to start a new restaurant called Arborvine, which in its 13 years has won many awards, and gained the same stellar reputation that the Fire Pond had all throughout New England.
John Hikade purchased this Apartment in 1998
Why John Hikade chose Blue Hill
When John and Beth purchased the building next door to the restaurant they knew they had their work cut out for them. With John's amazing carpentry skills and help from his 2 sons, the simple old doctors office next door was turned into a beautiful office space which is home to a local graphic design company (Borealis Press) and a gorgeous luxury apartment located in the center of Historic Blue Hill Village. Renters have found Blue Hill to have everything they are looking for from hiking, to dining and shopping, all right on the amazing Downeast Maine Coast.
What makes this Apartment unique
During the summer months you have the convenience of 2 restaurants just across the white fence- The Arborvine with its award winning fine dining, or the more casual Deep Water BrewPub with Craft Beers, outside seating and a Pub style menu. There are fantastic farmer's markets held several times a week in town, plus wonderful local events like street dances with the local Steel Band, plays by the community theater companies, fairs, festivals, and of course the coast of Maine just waiting to be explored. The cooler months bring a relaxed slower pace to the community. See Acadia national Park on skis, dine and shop. Many of the local shops and restaurants are still open, but you can also stay in and cook and curl up with a good book in front of the fire and watch the snow fly!

Great place to stay in Blue Hill
This is a lovely apartment. We have stayed there twice because it is clean, has every amenity and is conveniently located in town. The only downside is that while the apartment is on the second floor of the building, the bathroom is located downstairs on the first floor which is less than convenient in the middle of the night (!) Other than that it's a wonderful place to stay and we will return again and again.
Hiking, Culture and Incredible Food !
I spent a week in Blue Hill, staying in John and Beth’s beautiful little apartment. It was lovely and clean, with a well appointed kitchen for those times I wanted to cook. I loved their notebook full of things to do...I went on 4 of the hikes they had highlighted, and checked out Perry!s Lobster Shack as they recommended. I loved walking into town for coffee, to use the library, to visit one of the many art galleries, or to watch the sunrise from the working Harbor. I had dinner at Arborvine and the Brew Pub and had fabulous meals. Check out the Blue Hill Co-op for great breakfasts and lunches, and a wonderful health food market. I’ll certainly be back, as my son is moving to Blue Hill, and I hope to make Arborvine my home base again.
Blue Hill Nest
Everything was as advertised on the VRBO site. Great location, spotlessly clean, and well equipped / furnished. Would not hesitate to recommend to others.
Came for Acadia but Spent Most of our Time in Blue Hill
This property was better than anything we could have asked for. The owners were very friendly, and the food at the restaurant was quite frankly the best food I’ve ever had. In addition to the property being absolutely fantastic the town of Blue Hill was lovely. Be sure to check out the book that the owners left of trails in the area and restaurants because you don’t want to miss out on what Blue Hill has to offer. I can’t wait to go back and will definitely stay here again.
If you are traveling in Blue Hill Area the apartment at Arborvine is an excellent rental space. Will be back.
Cozy in Blue Hill
The apartment was cozy and comfortable. We hope to go back and spend more time there soon!
The historic and picturesque town of Blue Hill, established in 1789, is located on Blue Hill Bay. With around two thousand residents, this charming small town is home to many restaurants, galleries, shops, and preservation hiking trails. Whether you are looking to kayak, bike, hike, swim, explore, or just sit on the beach and relax, you are sure to love your time in Blue Hill. In the summer enjoy swimming, hiking, boating, and of course plenty of lobster and blue berry pie. Fall brings beautiful foliage, the Blue Hill Fair, and the Food, Wine & Foliage Festival. Winter is not to be missed with beautiful ski and snow shoe trails, ice skating, and a romantic dinner by the fireplace at Arborvine. Spring arrives with beautiful flowering apple trees and native lupines, first of the year greens and strawberries from many local organic farms, and increasingly warmer and sunnier days. Whatever the season Blue Hill is sure to fulfill your vacation desires year round.
