About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, Den, Sleeps 4

At Casas La Selvatica we offer an unforgettable rainforest immersion experience. Beyond comfortable accommodation, you will experience the sounds, scents and sights of the jungle with its amazing flora and fauna. Better yet, you will be only minutes away from a picture perfect beach, grocery store and restaurants. The setting is ideal for couples or families who appreciate the comfort of an entire home rather than a hotel room, and the cultural experience of living in an actual neighbourhood, surrounded by locals.

Casa Grande is located in Playa Chiquita (6km/4miles South of Puerto Viejo) within easy reach of countless recreational activities (zip-line jungle tours, chocolate tours, sea based activities: snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, kayaking), tours of the indigenous communities, yoga studios, and many more.

Our property and the surrounding area are home to an incredible array of wildlife: you will most likely watch howler monkeys in their search for food, toucans or sloths right from the comfort of the patio. Casa Grande is located minutes away from a couple of the most picturesque palm fringed beaches in the Caribbean. Your bilingual host will be available to assist with information about the area, bookings for activities/tours and offer detailed attention to your comfort throughout your vacation.

Built with natural hardwood and decorated with lively Caribbean touches, including eclectic local art and tile mosaics, Casa Grande features two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, large outdoor dining area, bathroom with hot shower and a frog pond to watch the conservation of some endangered species of frogs.

The home has two bedrooms and a den, comfortably accommodating up to four people in two double beds. We offer the following, along with your accommodation:

- bilingual host (English/Spanish) available to provide information and assistance as needed;

- laundry service is included for vacations of minimum 7 days (one load/week/adult guest)

- high speed wireless internet for your devices;

- digital metal safe for secure storage of valuables;

- transportation, tours and activities booking.

We would love to customize your vacation according to your needs. If you are celebrating a special occasion or would like to pleasantly surprise a loved one, we can provide additional services as required bottle of wine awaiting your arrival and/or local handmade organic chocolates, etc.) or arrange for a romantic dinner or spa package before your arrival.

Tours and Activities: There are many wonderful activities to do in between the rain forest and in the sea. From guided wildlife watching, zip-lining through the tree canopies, hiking or biking to cooking, dancing and other thrilling adventures, there are activities sure to fit into your ideal tropical vacation plans. We can book activities for you at a discounted rate, due to our collaboration with local tour agencies.

We aim to assist you with your travel planning and make your vacation seamless. Please let us know if you would like to receive information or bookings for transportation from San Jose airport, or booking of tours and activities. We are able to offer discounted rates for some activities, due to our collaboration with the local tour providers.

Detailed transportation information can be found under the "Map" tab. Please take the time to review the "house rules" (a standard rental agreement) which will be presented to you when you submit a reservation request (you will be asked to read and agree prior to your payment being processed). All payments are handled by the secure online payment system provided by HomeAway. By submitting a reservation request, you acknowledge that you reviewed all the information presented on this site and all your questions were answered to your satisfaction.

About Daniel or Jeff Mitroi Carlton

Our journey south was meant to be a temporary escape from the dark and rainy Canadian West Coast, in search of sunshine and warmth. After a brief search for a potential destination and keeping in mind that we desired nothing of an all inclusive resort, we quickly realized that one can have it all... in Costa Rica (Rich Coast)! As so many times before, we chose the off-beaten path...the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica was awaiting to be discovered! What a great surprise: not only did we get some rays and experienced the vibrant culture, but it all came with the most spectacular backdrop. The surroundings were magical! Lush green rain-forest filled with beautiful flowers, and wildlife otherwise only known to us from colourful atlases. There was a positive energy which we just could not get away from. After this first impression, a spark led to a dream and the dream became a plan...With the much appreciated help and support from our friends and families our new journey started at the end of 2009. We are delighted to be able to share our homes with our guests, and will assist as much as possible prior and during your trip to ensure a memorable experience.

Why Daniel or Jeff Mitroi Carlton chose Costa Rica

Dear travelers,

We visited the Southern Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica for the first time just in 2009. Even before our vacation ended, we knew that we had just found a special place which would become our home one day. After relentlessly working on finding our dream home, we stumbled upon La Selvatica and literally fell in love at first sight. We are excited to share our home with you, open minded fellow travelers, and are convinced that you will soon discover your own reasons to love this place, and the reasons it was called 'The Coast of Utopia' by reputable travel journals. Happy travels!

Daniel & Jeff Carlton Mitroi

What makes this house unique

Comfortable feeling of living in a home, not a cramped hotel room.

Exceptional, prompt travel planing assistance provided directly by the owners, from the initial contact with a potential guest.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We love Puerto Viejo so much and plan on returning very soon! The people are truly Pura Vida, especially our hosts! The house has a nice hot shower, the internet is OK but works best on the terrace. The kitchen has everything you need to make food and the fans keep the place nice and cool. We didn't meet the hosts, but Daniel who looks after the place is a great guy, who helps out and is a Pura Vida sort of guy! Loads of cool bugs and animals around too! The area itself, there is a restaurant called Diwo nearby, literally two mins. It is amazing and Ivan the host is a great guy, who makes great food. We thought that Playa Chiquita was the best of the beaches, it is quiet, has loads of spots that you can make your own private beach. Uva is lovely too. Just don't walk with bare on Negra!!! Get bikes at the local supermarket!

The area is enjoyed by independent travellers and it is better suited to travellers not adverse to being in occasional and relative close proximity with geckos, spiders, humming birds, agoutis, bats or any other creatures which inhabit the nearby rainforest. This area is NOT a bug free zone.

A beautiful unconventional home

  • 4 of 5

We spent 5 weeks in this beautiful house. The decoration was spectacular, everywhere you look there is something special to attract the look. The colours for sure make the warm atmosphere. Beds are confortable and the patio were we were spending a lot of time, protect us from the sun and from the rain.

Surrounded by a plush garden we were at the middle of a little oasis of jungle. There are many beaches around at a walking distance and also a convenience store, more like a mini grocery. Unfortunately the internet is unstable, sometimes on sometimes out...

Daniel our the property manager took a good care of us.

In the whole we really enjoyed our stay at Casa Selvatica.

Wonderful experience! Would definitely visit again!

  • 5 of 5

The host was very helpful and always available in case we needed anything. This house was perfect for our first trip to Costa Rica. The house beautiful and situated just a short walk from the beach and a short bike ride from the night life in Puerto Viejo. I would definitely recommend It to a friend!

Stay at La Selvatica

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I had enjoyable in Playas Chiquita. The facilities are as presented but as with any thing we had some adjustments. The property has a beautiful garden that is visited by birds, frogs, bugs and other interesting things (people). Since we were there for the month of February, we got to know the locals and enjoyed it immensely. The jewel in the crown however is Dani the manager. Local knowledge is best and Dani provided that. We were unable to convince him to return to Michigan, so it best to go to La Selvatica and enjoy a day in the hammocks and talk with Dani.

The location of the property is perfect. The property was very well maintained.

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying literally in the jungle with a quaint grocery store at the end of the path leading out not to mention some excellent restaurants very close by. We woke up each morning with the Howler Monkeys and literally saw them in the trees as we had coffee. The location of Playa Chiquita is perfect as it is centrally located with five beaches to visit (Puerto Viejo, Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, and Manzanillo). I suggest to visit the Jaguar Center first and you will learn so much about the animals in the area. This turned out to be a relaxing, educational, and wonderful time for family bonding! I would suggest at least a week if not more. After traveling, we had five full days. We packed so much in those days that we were exhausted and in bed by 9:30. It was very nice to have comfortable beds and a secured home to be in at the end of those days. We will definately come back!

The location was gorgeous and convenient, but the place was a little underwhelming.

  • 3 of 5

The hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful. However, the house was less than desirable. I do believe it would be a great place to stay if you just looking for a place to crash at night and didn't care about how nice it is.

Owner's Response: Hi Jennifer, thank you for taking the time to review your stay! We wished you had provided details or better yet, inform of what you would have like improved at the time we reached out to you, the day after your arrival, and asked if you found everything all right. Your confirmation at the time provided us the confidence that it was indeed the case. It is unfortunate that nothing was also mentioned to your host, during his daily check-ins with your group. We pride ourselves with providing a comfortable home located in an amazing natural environment, as well as excellent customer service, from the time of the initial inquiry until check-out. We hope that our future guests offer us the gift of prompt and honest feedback during their stay, so in case anything could be done better, we are given the chance to do so, while the guests are still there enjoying their vacation. We have implemented a well established dual system of checking in with our guests to ensure that their expectations are met: we (owners) already reach out by email within 24 hours after check-in; the host checks-in at least once daily with the guests directly on-site. We will continue to make these efforts and hope that our guests will understand that we need their feedback in order to adequately meet their needs. We would like to encourage any future guests to ask specific questions about the aspects important to them, and we commit to provide honest answers.
