Property Details

Updated: Oct 15, 2016
2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, Den, Sleeps 4

At Casas La Selvatica we offer comfortable accommodation (entire home) immersed in the rain forest and surrounded by wildlife, yet only minutes away from a picture perfect beach, grocery store and restaurants. The setting is ideal for couples or families who appreciate the comfort of a home rather than a hotel room. We are located in Playa Chiquita (6km/4miles South of Puerto Viejo) within easy reach of countless recreational activities.

Our property and the surrounding area are home to an incredible array of wildlife: you will most likely watch howler monkeys in their search for food, toucans or sloths right from the comfort of the patio. Casa Grande is located minutes away from a couple of the most picturesque palm fringed beaches in the Caribbean. Your bilingual host will be available to assist with information about the area, bookings for activities/tours and offer detailed attention to your comfort throughout your vacation.

Built with natural hardwood and decorated with lively Caribbean touches, including eclectic local art and tile mosaics, Casa Grande features two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, large outdoor dining area, bathroom with hot shower and a frog pond to watch the conservation of some endangered species of frogs.

The home has two bedrooms and a den, comfortably accommodating up to four people in two double beds. We offer the following, along with your accommodation:

- bilingual host (English/Spanish) available to provide information and assistance as needed;

- laundry service is included for vacations of minimum 7 days (one load/week/adult guest)

- high speed wireless internet for your devices;

- digital metal safe for secure storage of valuables;

- transportation, tours and activities booking.

We would love to customize your vacation according to your needs. If you are celebrating a special occasion or would like to pleasantly surprise a loved one, we can provide additional services as required bottle of wine awaiting your arrival and/or local handmade organic chocolates, etc.) or arrange for a romantic dinner or spa package before your arrival.

Tours and Activities: There are many wonderful activities to do in between the rain forest and in the sea. From guided wildlife watching, zip-lining through the tree canopies, hiking or biking to cooking, dancing and other thrilling adventures, there are activities sure to fit into your ideal tropical vacation plans. We can book activities for you at a discounted rate, due to our collaboration with local tour agencies.

We aim to assist you with your travel planning and make your vacation seamless. Please let us know if you would like to receive information or bookings for transportation from San Jose airport, or booking of tours and activities. We are able to offer discounted rates for some activities, due to our collaboration with the local tour providers.

Detailed transportation information can be found under the "Map" tab. Please take the time to review the "house rules" (a standard rental agreement) which will be presented to you when you submit a reservation request (you will be asked to read and agree prior to your payment being processed). About the Owner

Our journey south was meant to be a temporary escape from the dark and rainy Canadian West Coast, in search of sunshine and warmth. After a brief search for a potential destination and keeping in mind that we desired nothing of an all inclusive resort, we quickly realized that one can have it all... in Costa Rica (Rich Coast)! As so many times before, we chose the off-beaten path...the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica was awaiting to be discovered! What a great surprise: not only did we get some rays and experienced the vibrant culture, but it all came with the most spectacular backdrop. The surroundings were magical! Lush green rain-forest filled with beautiful flowers, and wildlife otherwise only known to us from colourful atlases. There was a positive energy which we just could not get away from. After this first impression, a spark led to a dream and the dream became a plan...With the much appreciated help and support from our friends and families our new journey started at the end of 2009. We are delighted to be able to share our homes with our guests, and will assist as much as possible prior and during your trip to ensure a memorable experience.

The location was gorgeous and convenient, but the place was a little underwhelming.

  • 3 of 5

The hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful. However, the house was less than desirable. I do believe it would be a great place to stay if you just looking for a place to crash at night and didn't care about how nice it is.

Owner's Response: Hi Jennifer, thank you for taking the time to review your stay! We wished you had provided details or better yet, inform of what you would have like improved at the time we reached out to you, the day after your arrival, and asked if you found everything all right. Your confirmation at the time provided us the confidence that it was indeed the case. It is unfortunate that nothing was also mentioned to your host, during his daily check-ins with your group. We pride ourselves with providing a comfortable home located in an amazing natural environment, as well as excellent customer service, from the time of the initial inquiry until check-out. We hope that our future guests offer us the gift of prompt and honest feedback during their stay, so in case anything could be done better, we are given the chance to do so, while the guests are still there enjoying their vacation. We have implemented a well established dual system of checking in with our guests to ensure that their expectations are met: we (owners) already reach out by email within 24 hours after check-in; the host checks-in at least once daily with the guests directly on-site. We will continue to make these efforts and hope that our guests will understand that we need their feedback in order to adequately meet their needs. We would like to encourage any future guests to ask specific questions about the aspects important to them, and we commit to provide honest answers.

We had no surprises everything was as mentioned in the write up on Home Away site. The caretaker very informative and very helpful. We ladies felt very safe the grocery store at the end of the lane was great. Market in Puerto Veijto was worth going to. The pizza restaurant chocolate and bread restaurant and the Jungle Spa all very good. People friendly. The beach near the lodge is the best very sandy and great to swim in. Bicycle is the only way to travel and very safe. Fabulous time recommend Daniel and Jeff very helpful prior to going. Strongly recommend taking the direct shuttle from airport to the house. All in all very impressed and pleased wonderful vacation. Thanks for everything would definitely recommend to others here in Ontario.

Fantastic Get Away!

  • 5 of 5

We (my husband and our son) spent amazing 2 weeks in this gem! The home is clean, with lots of character and very roomy but cozy at the same time. Most of the time we were at "home", we relaxed in the hammocks on the covered porch with the sounds of the jungle creatures all around us. The Frog Pond in the yard allowed us the opportunity to see and hear many frog species. Fireflies lit up the garden almost every night as well

During the day you could lay in the hammock and hear as well as see many different species of birds in the area.

Having the kitchen to allow us to cook/prep meals was great, especially with the produce truck coming by daily with all of the fresh fruit and vegetables. The grocery store ( a 3 minute walk) had everything we needed to compliment the produce for a great meal.

Any questions we had were answered by a very knowledgeable and friendly man named Rodrigo. He would stop in and check on us, almost daily, seeing if we needed or wanted anything.

The airlines had misplaced my luggage for 6 days and Rodrigo was helpful in giving us places to go shopping so I could get the items I needed. Dan and Jeff were helpful as well, offering to help me out back at home in Canada.

There is nothing negative to say about this experience we had with this portion of our vacation. Jeff and Dan made it SO easy!

Would we stay again... YES we would! In a New York minute!

Thanks so much for sharing your home with us!

Great Rainforest Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at Casa La Selvetica. This was our first Eco vacation. We were at the cabin in mid February and it was exactly as described. It is a well appointed, well maintained bungalow built in the Playa Chiquita rainforest. The owners have done a good job of making you feel secure without insulating you from all of the sights, sounds and smells of the rainforest and there are unpopulated beaches within a 10 minute walk that rival those found throughout the Caribbean.

We were at the cabin for 8 nights and, for the most part, shared it with a troop of howler monkeys. We also saw sloths, an agouti, toucans, green parrots and 5 species of frogs plus more birds than we could identify. Many of these were spotted from our hammocks on the front porch.

We fell into a natural rhythm at Casa La Selvetica that we hadn’t found in other trips south. On some days the cost of enjoying the Howler Monkeys at 5:00 am was being asleep by 9 pm, but so be it!

The owners, Daniel and Jeff, were extremely helpful and patiently answered all of our questions. They provided advice on where to stay in San Jose and helped us arrange shuttles. There was also a cell phone at the cabin that included contacts for taxis, shuttles and medical clinics. We used the phone on a number of occasions and the only cost was a local phone card purchased for less than $5.

We worried about mosquitoes, but they were a non issue.

The Duonde Gourmet grocery store was within a 2 minute walk from the cabin and had everything we could possibly need at prices that were surprisingly reasonable and there are a number of restaurants within an easy walk.

Rodrigo was great. He was there to meet us on the first day and orient us to the property. It was nice having a local contact available to answer questions. One morning we locked ourselves out and he had to come to our rescue! He checked in every day and we really enjoyed his company.

While in Playa Chiquita we toured the Jaguar Rescue Center and went to the Chocolate Museum. We also went into the Puerto Viejo market on Saturday am and caught a local surfing competition. We had planned to take a guided hike through the Manzanillo National Park but it was rained out.

In general, we loved Costa Rica and will return. When we do we are hoping to stay at Casa La Selvetica for a longer stay next time. We would recommend it to anyone who is looking to slow things down and reconnect with nature.

Une adorable maison dans la jungle

  • 5 of 5

Merci, merci beaucoup Rodrigo!

Truly a private oasis!

  • 5 of 5

Our directions from San Jose wer simple and accurate. When we pulled in we were met by Rodrigo the property manager and he took time to show us everything about our house we needed to know. The house was just as shown. No surprise photography. The beds were comfortable had bug nets but I don't think they were necessary. The house is situated on the edge of the rainforest with close proximity to anything you might need. A fully stocked grocery store is a five minute walk away. Restaurants all within walking distance. And the beaches very close by as well. We kept bumping into Rodrigo who would always have a suggestion for us about where to eat and what to see so we wouldn't miss a thing. We saw so many monkeys birds and our neighbour saw a sloth. There were no negative things that I can think of. And Rodrigo helped make our stay a memorable one. We will definitely be back.

From the Owner

Dear travelers, We visited the Southern Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica for the first time just in 2009. Even before our vacation ended, we knew that we had just found a special place which would become our home one day. After relentlessly working on finding our dream home, we stumbled upon La Selvatica and literally fell in love at first sight. We are excited to share our home with you, open minded fellow travelers, and are convinced that you will soon discover your own reasons to love this place, and the reasons it was called 'The Coast of Utopia' by reputable travel journals. Happy travels! Daniel & Jeff Carlton Mitroi

If you plan to arrive at La Selvatica on the day of your flight you will have to chose a flight landing in San Jose no later than 2pm. Similarly, if you plan to depart La Selvatica on the day of your flight, your flight should depart San Jose at 2pm or later.

Air travel: Upon landing in San Jose, you can continue on a Sansa direct flights to Limon (30 min), which is 40 km away from Playa Chiquita. You will have to take a taxi from Limon to the house, or flag a local bus (every 2 hours).

Airport shuttles: A few reputable transport providers offer daily departures in air conditioned minivans, directly from the airport, and operate in door-to-door service, so will drop you off directly at La Selvatica. Average cost is $50/person (one way). For updated schedule, rates and to reserve please google Interbus, Easy Ride, Gecko Trail or Caribe Shuttle websites.

Budget minded travellers can catch one of the frequent direct city buses right outside the airport going downtown San Jose (buses run 24/7). The trip cost approx. $1 (450 colones - local currency) and takes approximately 25 minutes. Get off at the terminus stop. The bus is safe and reliable. When off the bus, catch a taxi and ask the driver to take you to Terminal de Buses de San Carlos. The taxi ride will take approx. 10 min and cost $4 (2200 colones, metered). If you prefer to take a taxi from the airport to the San Carlos bus terminal: taxis are readily available outside the terminal. Note that there are two types of taxis: orange (licensed for airport, available as you exit the terminal and more expensive) and red (licensed for the city, available on the road just behind the airport parking lot and less expensive). The cost of a trip downtown is approx. $22 (red) or $32 (orange) and takes approx. 25 minutes. You will also see numerous other drivers offering their services. This could be a money saving option if you speak some Spanish and are willing to bargain heavily.

Buses: there is one direct daily bus from downtown San Jose to Playa Chiquita, and four daily buses to Puerto Viejo, where you can catch a taxi to La Selvatica. The direct bus leaves Terminal de Buses de San Carlos at 12 noon and drops you off 2 minutes walk from Casas La Selvatica, in front of El Duende Grourmet Grocery Store, after a 4.5 hour scenic ride through cloud forests and a picturesque stretch of the Caribbean Coast. This trip from San Jose to Playa Chiquita costs approx.$11. Buses to Puerto Viejo leave the same bus terminal at 6am, 10am, 2pm and 4pm. Upon arrival in Puerto Viejo, you will see taxis waiting right at the bus stop. Ask the driver to take to La Selvatica Playa Chiquita. The taxi will cost approximately 4000 colones ($7.5) - always confirm the price with the driver before departure. Buses tickets cannot be reserved in advance online, but can be purchased from the ticket office at the bus terminal. For departures on weekends or busy holidays, it is recommended to arrive at the bus terminal 1 hour prior to your bus departure to ensure you will be able to reserve your seat.

Private transfer from airport to La Selvatica could be arranged. A minivan of up to 8 people cost approx. 200 USD. Generally, this option is the most expensive was to travel, but could be cost-effective for a family or group travel.

Car rental: 7 global car rental companies have offices at the airport in San Jose. For an updated list of options, please visit the SJO airport website.

River Rafting: our collaborator Exploradores Outdoors offers an adrenaline filled rafting trip from San Jose directly to La Selvatica. There is one daily departure at 6am (you would have to spend the night in San Jose). The tour operator will pick you up at your hotel, drive to a river exploration center where you will embark on a 4 hour descent on Pacuare River. You will then be driven directly to La Selvatica. Lunch is provided and your luggage is safely driven while you are on the raft. The trip can be booked directly on the tour operator website for $99/pers or through us for $90/pers.

Driving directions (approx.4.5 hrs): from San Jose follow signs for road 32 to Limon. In Limon, follow signs for road 36 to Puerto Viejo. Once you reach Puerto Viejo, stay on the same road which goes through town, and continue to drive toward Manzanillo. Playa Chiquita is approx. 4 miles (10 min drive) after you exit Puerto Viejo (you will first drive through Cocles, then Playa Chiquita is next). Keep an eye out on your right hand side for El Duende Gourmet grocery store, then take the very first road to the right (small gravel road, you will see our sign there). Keep right on that road for 20 seconds and you will see our entrance.
