|Minimum Stay||1 - 7 nights|
Nestling in the desirable 'up-hill' community of the historic settlement of Governor's Harbour, Low Cay (“low key”) is a discreet and delightful cottage residence, recently renovated to a unique standard of contemporary elegance.
Re-created in 2012 by its British owners as a stylish and romantic retreat, this one bedroomed hideaway offers couples a taste of local life combined with a five star European standard of interior design, with WiFi and air conditioning throughout.
The main living space combines a gorgeous open plan, well-appointed kitchen with the highest quality utensils and equipment and an extensive polished concrete worktop and breakfast bar, and a spacious and elegant lounge with comfortable sofas, bespoke driftwood table, LED TV, a Bowers & Wilkins 'Zeppelin' iPod dock, a hand-made polished concrete occasional table and luxurious expanses of floating, translucent linen curtain.
The sense of space and luxury is enhanced by the wonderfully worked full height ceiling and versatile lighting design, which give a scale to the residence that its charming exterior keeps modestly hidden.
The bathroom delivers a sense of intimate luxury with its lavishly sized walk-in shower with sand blasted glass screen, hand-made driftwood console with twin basins and natural light filtered through obscured glass windows.
The bedroom features a locally designed and constructed super-queen sized (66'W) bedstead and side tables, with an individually commissioned US box spring mattress.
Storage is provided in the built-in wardrobe and additional stylish shelving.
Through double French doors, the bedroom gives on to the rear covered porch, a large and beautifully furnished room with a delightful aspect over the secluded terraced, landscaped garden, perfect for early morning breakfast or evening cocktails, while to the side of the house an enclosed hot water shower offers a refreshing al fresco bathing alternative.
At the front of the house, the full width terrace with extended sun deck gives panoramic views of the historic Cupid's Cay and spectacular Caribbean sunsets - the Caribbean is 250 yards away from the house. The world famous French Leave beach is a one minute car ride away, over the hill on the eastern, Atlantic side of the island.
Situated as it is in the center of the community, all amenities are within walking distance. Charming local cafes, grocery and liquor stores are no more than three minutes walk away. Local fishermen (one is our next door neighbor), sell lobster, conch & grouper down the road every afternoon at the water's edge. The legendary Governor's Harbour Friday night fish fry is a four minute stroll, as is the historic Haynes Library, cultural hub of the local community.
Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed staying in your house in Governor’s Harbour. A beautiful house, comfortable, clean, bright, and well equipped.
French Leave beach is just spectacular, and the folks on Eleuthera were as warm and welcoming as anyone I’ve ever met. Arnold is a kind and talented fellow. I think you are lucky to be working with him.
All in all, a delightful time …
This Cottage was the best choice we could of made. It was well equipped, clean, bright and beautifully decorated. The caretaker Arnold was a pleasure. The beaches were awesome!
We are happy we chose Low Cay. The owners were great to work with and would definitely recommend staying here.
My husband and I recently enjoyed a week at Low Cay and were impressed with how well appointed and modern the house was - a true vacation "home" rental, rather than a house which is kept only for the rental market. The owners, property manager and caretaker were all easy to deal with and efficient. Great location right in Governor's Harbour about half way up the "hill" - an easy walk down to shops or an easy walk over the hill to arguably one of the best beaches on the island. We always rent a car when on island, but strictly speaking if you were here only a week you would not need to, although I'd recommend one for sightseeing and exploring the island.
Chris's house was really nice and was exactly as pictured in the photos. The screened porch on the back was really nice in the evening when the sun was directly hitting the front porch of the house. The proximity to town is great. Chris, Arnold, Elizabeth and neighbor Arun were all helpful during our stay. This is our 10th Caribbean vacation (never going twice to the same place) and Eleuthera had the best beaches we have ever seen with the least amount of people. We are thinking of returning to Eleuthera.
We returned to the Eleuthera in late Jan. 2016 after having first visited 28 yrs ago. Our accommodations this time couldn't have be more different than last time!
From the beginning, the Owners(Chris & Carolyn), Caretaker (Arnold), Housekeeper(Elizabeth), Gardener, VRBO (Tara, Matt and Roselyn) and everyone associated with the rental were just amazing, communicating with us numerous times, answering our questions, providing payment and contract information and making sure we were completely comfortable with the rental. Chris called twice just to see how we were doing. I can't say enough to thank each one!
'Low Cay' was completed almost 4 years before our stay but it was exactly as the photos portrayed it and in great condition. It was fully furnished and equipped for everything we needed. When I found the Weber grill lacked a scrub brush, Elizabeth brought one over, after just 'popping in' one evening to see how we were doing. With the Rental Agreement, you will be given a lengthy, helpful letter of introduction and instruction from the Owners. It explains everything about the house plus info on key people in the community that you might encounter.
My wife loved the kitchen which had everything she needed. We ate all but one meal at the kitchen peninsula, from which you have a view of the harbor in the distance. The bed was super and we slept great. The unit is tucked into a lot on a dead-end street, so you have a couple of homes beside you. But the evenings were very quiet in the neighborhood. As it says, the unit has wi-fi which we found worked great. The city water service was off when we arrived but came back within 2 hours. We never had a problem again.
We purchased a $30 passport phone plan from AT&T before we left home so we wouldn't be hit with exorbitant data roaming charges. AT&T has great coverage all over the island. Rental cars may have only 'third-party' insurance only. Don't assume you get insurance with the car and yours from home probably won't cover you.
Beaches on both sides of the island are spectacular. The caribbean side is more shallow and more placid. The atlantic side had breaking waves everyday we were there. Try snorkeling. We used 'Deep Woods Off' at 25% DEET and were just fine, but don't sit or lay directly on the sand or the 'no-see-ums' will have a feast!
In summation, we had just the kind of vacation we needed to relax and recharge our batteries. Thanks to everyone that made it possible! Jon
Had a lovely stay at Low Cay. Rental was everything we expected it to be. Beautifully maintained and clean throughout. If you prefer to walk (as we do), there are a handful of restaurants within a mile's radius of the cottage. If you rent a car, there are more options available. We had the chance to meet the owners Chris and Carolyn before they headed home which was an added touch. Chris, Carolyn and Eleuthera Vacation Rentals were a great help and provided great tips and activities. We did hire a car and managed to see all of the island plus a trip to Spanish Wells. Unfortunately, the weather hindered any boat trips and our plan to go horse-riding but we still had a relaxing holiday. We would have no hesitation in recommending the cottage to friends if ever visiting Eleuthera
Very nice - just like pictured. Kitchen had whatever you may need, appliances were first rate. We really enjoyed the porch and the lovely garden. Groceries can be a bit of a challenge, bringing food is a good option. If you like peace and quiet, the beach of your choice, and friendly people this property is perfect.
