5 Bedrooms, 5.5 Baths, Indoor Basketball, 20 Acres With A Creek (Sleeps 10+)
2013 marked the end of our 10-year project to convert an historic barn into a beautiful residence and small event center. We took our time to do it 'right'.
Carl Gilbert Johnson and his father, Edward Johnson, built this barn in 1915 on the family's homestead. Until 1992, the barn was used in the family dairy business. On site you can still see the creamery with its foot- thick cement walls, a log cabin and numerous farm implements.
When we arrived in 1999 the barn was sagging a bit and leaning slightly, yet had a great feel about it. We put it up on a foundation and eventually decided to convert it into a 5-bedroom house with a wonderful hay loft. It took a long time to renovate, but now it is a place that many can enjoy.
Each bedroom has its own toilet/sink/shower and all bathrooms are ADA compliant. Each shower has grab bars and a granite seat. The large master shower has two shower heads!
The hay loft has an oak floor with two layers of soundproofing so that a basketball dribbled upstairs is hardly noticed downstairs.
The barn renovation includes a combination of original barn wood, warehouse wood, and just-milled, rough-sawn lumber. The baseboard throughout the barn is made of wood salvaged from the corrals that were on site. The bed frames and headboards are made with wood that was growing in the early 1800's.
From the antique decor to the handmade wood beds and the complete kitchen to the WiFi system, the barn is a pleasant combination of old and new. Throughout the barn you will notice the Hilton mattresses, pillows and sheets, the thick cotton towels, and a feeling of home. We have traveled a considerable amount in our lives. Now we want our guests to enjoy the little amenities that make a trip a pleasure and a place feel like home.
The barn is surrounded by 20 acres of pasture and trees that outline Hyalite Creek. From various spots on the property, you can see the seven mountain ranges that define the Gallatin Valley. Around the barn you will find a quarter-mile path that can be used for hiking, jogging, cross-country skiing or star watching.
Through the years we've had many craftsmen help us on this project. Almost to the last man they have said that there was something special about the barn and they enjoyed working on it. We believe that you too will feel the special something this barn offers.
Great Vacation Stay! SO unique!
About the Owner
Dean is a Wisconsin transplant and Kristi is a native Montanan. We met teaching school on the Blackfeet Reservation near Glacier Park near the Canadian border. We have lived in Bozeman long enough to see our children grow up through Anderson Elementary and Bozeman High Schools. Kristi likes yoga, antiques and lunch with her friends. Dean likes Model A Fords, history and cross-country skiing.
Great Vacation Stay! SO unique!
Family vacation in Bozeman. Four families. 8 adults, 7 kids - 6 months - 11. The barn was just great. Wonderful condition. The bedroom/bathroom suites really set this place apart from other homes we have rented. We were so comfortable. We had lots of fun kid activities going on in the yard and loft. We have relatives in Bozeman and had a dinner for 25 one evening. Plenty of space. There were so many great things about the barn. Probably our favorite was the living room garage door. Truly indoor/outdoor living! We had beautiful weather - highs in the 90's - but the barn stayed comfortable. The location is minutes from Bozeman. We were running back and forth all the time. Very convenient. I would definitely recommend the 1915 Barn. We will be back!
Fantastic location for trip to Bozeman
We had a great week at the 1915 Barn. Beautiful home and beautiful location. We thoroughly enjoyed being able to enjoy the beautiful views from the garage door each evening. The kids absolutely loved the hayloft and kept them entertained for hours each day. Convenient location to get to town. Having a bathroom for each bedroom was a fantastic bonus. Overall a wonderful week in Bozeman.
Stellar accommodations! We could not have chosen a better place to stay with our family during a recent trip to the Bozeman area. Tucked away nicely, the location is convenient to both the Downtown Bozeman area, as well as nearby the Gallatin Gateway/rode south to Big Sky and Yellowstone.
The barn is fantastic - the pictures do not do it justice. Inside, their is great ventilation for those summer thunderstorms and cool evening winds. We sat with the living room garage door open with a cup of coffee each morning, and a beer or two each evening.
Great outdoor space to do some bocce ball and frisbee or just take a nice walk.
Kitchen set up well for those who like to cook. Nice outdoor grill. Basketball court upstairs and pool table downstairs provide some entertainment as well.
Extra fridge in game room for beers and other beverages.
Beds - lets face it - usually are sub-par at some places. I think they used a local mattress manufacturer, and man are they comfortable. Slept fantastic. Everything else up to expectations, including showers, wireless internet, and even a great set up for speakers throughout the house.
We will be back for a longer stay in the future - 6 days wasn't enough. You will not be disappointed.
PS - the owners are truly generous people. They love their property and make certain their guests feel welcomed. Their pride in the property show.
Best Place for a Montana Wedding Any Time of Year
The 1915 Barn was the venue site for our May wedding and we couldn't have asked for a better place. The barn was clean and inviting and had everything we needed. Kristi and Dean were wonderful to work with, keeping in close contact and always available to answer any questions and help us out. The barn has wonderful indoor and outdoor space for any time of year, with great views of the surrounding mountains and big sky country. An extra bonus is the option of renting the space out for guests/family/bridal party to stay at for the weekend of the wedding. We will definitely be renting this space again in the future for family gatherings!
Best Wedding Venue!
The 1915 Barn met and exceeded our expectation for a wedding venue. The space comfortably held multiple guests for 3 days, including
our rehearsal dinner, wedding ceremony and wedding reception. Looking in any direction, you are able to see breath taking views of the multiple mountain ranges that Bozeman has to offer. Dean and Kristi's effort and care to make our stay unforgettable was the personal touch that made our decision to stay at the Barn an easy one. The 10 plus years that they spent working on the Barn can be seen in the beauty of every detail from the bedrooms to the hayloft to the 1 mile path around the property. If I could I would live in the 1915 Barn!
Fantastic Rustic Montana Experience
The property was absolutely perfect and the owners clearly took great care with their attention to every detail. The barn has rustic Montana charm with all of the modern day amenities. The owners were a joy to work with and provided a first rate experience. This is an ideal location for a company party, family reunion or a "staycation-cation". Conveniently located to beautiful trails and downtown Bozeman it is a great location. We can't wait to come back!!
From the Owner
“When we were looking for a house with acreage, we found this property: a great outdoor space, but still relatively close to town. Instead of having a view with city lights, we found a place with a view of starlight. This is a place where you can see fox and deer and eagles; you can cross country ski or take a walk, picnic in a meadow surrounded by mountain ranges, or fish in Hyalite Creek. There are many fine places to sit and chat or take out a drawing pad and record what you see. There are many ways to enjoy the 1915 Barn and its surroundings. You will find your own.”

From the Owner
“When you walk into the barn you will enjoy the original 11-foot ceilings made of darkened antique wood. The warm colors used on the walls accent the antique furniture and handmade vintage barn-wood bed frames. The carefully chosen drawings, photos, and maps are decorative and informative. An end of the 14 foot by 60 foot living/TV/game room is a garage door that is a giant 'window' to the world. The kitchen has 20 stoneware place settings and a table space for each. A modern kitchen and laundry will allow you to do things you do at home. The entire barn has a sound system, an intercom and WiFi. We subscribe to DirecTV with over a hundred channels. Each bedroom has a personal sound system- just plug in your mp3, iPod, or computer. Each bedroom also has a shower/toilet/sink and a sitting area. The beds have Hilton brand mattresses and headboards that are handmade from antique barn wood. The hay loft has great acoustics and a sound system. There also is a basketball rim and a hardwood floor in the hay loft. The rounded exposed rafters let you feel the shape of the roof. From the attached deck you can see the 10,000 ft. Spanish Peaks, the Tobacco Root Mountains, Gooch Hill and the Horseshoe HIlls. In the yard and surrounding pasture you will find part of the barn's log wall, horseshoe pits, part of the old corral, a log house, a creamery, old farm implements and a tractor. At the corner of the property is Hyalite Creek. It is a great place to collect your thoughts, catch a fish or just sit and listen to nature. Come find your special place at the 1915 Barn.
