About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Casita Encanto (Spanish for enchanted little house) is located in San Diego, California, near the Gaslamp District in Downtown San Diego. Casita Encanto is a charming, luxury, one bedroom, fully furnished cottaget, just 7 miles from downtown San Diego in a unique, eclectic, semi-rural neighborhood. We are zoned agricultural with a 1/2 acre minimum lot requirement. Because of the zoning laws, there are no apartment buildings - just one house on each 1/2 acre. As a result, you feel like you are in the country, even though we're just a few miles away from the city. It is very quiet and peaceful here. You will not find any trendy restaurants in this neighborhood, but there are countless of them just a few miles away. We have been in this neighborhood for 24 years and absolutely love it. It is the best kept secret in all of San Diego - as far as I'm concerned.

When you step off the porch of the Casita, you are in the most beautiful, fragrant shade garden. Relax on your private redwood deck and enjoy the pleasure of watching hummingbirds and butterflies play. Smell the extraordinary perfume of the trumpet trees and night blooming jasmine. You can catch the morning sun on the upper deck or the middle deck. Sit and relax in the blue alcove and you will feel like you've been transported to some tropical jungle. Wander into the back yard or down into the fruit orchard and pick some ripe, organically grown fruit. Because we are located in a subtropical environment, our gardens and plants are beautiful year round. We also have great nighttime views. Imagine how wonderful it would be to get away from the cold and snow and spend some time here in warm, sunny San Diego. Have a romantic getaway or bring the kids. We can accommodate up to 4 people. Come stay for a few days, a week or a month.

Downtown San Diego is a vibrant, energetic area with many fine restaurants, live music venues and broadway theater. We are very close to Coronado Island and the Silver Strand Beach, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Petco Park, the Convention Center, Seaport Village, San Diego Harbor, the Embarcadero, Old Town, Mission Hills, and much more.

Keywords: Charming one bedroom cottage near the Gaslamp area of San Diego; great night time views; sleeps up to 6; 125 nt/$700 week/$2500 month.

About Deborah Giraud

My husband Jerry and I bought our house in 1992. We built a granny flat for my mother-in-law. She lived there until just recently when we moved her into a board and care at the age of 96. We have remodeled the granny flat and it is now Casita Encanto. We have a beautiful, unique piece of property close to downtown San Diego and thought that we would like to share this wonderful place with people from all over the world.

What makes this cottage unique

Casita Encanto is extremely comfortable. The furniture is comfortable. The beds are comfortable. The towels are absorbant and soft. The colors are soothing. The entertainment system is state-of-the-art. The best part is the beauty of the gardens, the quiet of the neighborhood, and the feeling that you have been transported into a tropical hideaway. We are less than 10 minutes away from the Gaslamp District which has countless 4 and 5 star restaurants, live theater and great music venues. We are also close to Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, Old Town, Petco Park, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, Coronado Island, to name just a few of great San Diego tourist areas.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I wanted to recommend an enjoyable vacation stay at Casita Encanto which is a small cottage fully contained and fully equipped that is located in the hills about 7 miles east from downtown San Diego near Fwy 94. The bed is wonderful and it gave me great slumber and the grounds are lush and tropical. I recommend Casita Encanto highly to those who love to try new adventures and who love life. The host and hostess are tremendous people and very cordial. Sure beats a motel or hotel.

Casita Enchanto - San Diego, CA Lemon Grove area

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Casita Enchanto, Deborah & Jerry were excellent hosts and made us feel very welcome. The casita is attached to their home but completely separated by a divider wall. It has a lovely deck area and the yard will be amazing when spring/summer arrives.

We visited in mid January and hit the week of rain that deluged San Diego for about 6 days. Deborah supplied us with a couple of umbrellas, not usually required in San Diego is what everyone told us. We were confined to the casita for 3 of our days because of heavy rains and flash floods, but managed to watch some TV which has many channels to choose from. We also used their hot tub on several of the evenings and it is first class. The yard has several separate areas to enjoy the outdoors when weather permits and all are surrounded by plentiful plants and flowers. The whole back yard has shaded areas for those days you want to get out of the sun, or bright sunny areas when you want to enjoy the usual sunny weather. The deck is completely covered so you can sit out in either rain or shine.

Our only negative comment would be that the bed is in need of replacement as the mattress was not good for either myself or my wife. The bedroom itself is small but has a vanity and closet that allows for your clothes to be hung or placed away during your stay.

The kitchen has a stove, fridge, and all utensils you require to cook a complete meal. You also have a BBQ on one of the decks that you can use.

The private label honey she supplied was excellent and a very nice touch. We arrived without any coffee for the next morning and Deborah kindly supplied us enough to get us through the evening and morning coffee requirements.

All in all a very nice place and we will definitely rebook when we come to San Diego. The casita is well maintained and quite central to many of the areas you will want to visit.

Owner's Response: Dear Dave and Regina: Thank you for your lovely review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay with us. I'm very sorry to hear about the bed not being comfortable. I will make sure I change the mattress immediately. I'm sorry you didn't mention it to me while you were here, as I would have taken care of it right away. Sincerely deborah and jerry

Place and location great.

Comfortable place with beautiful grounds. Located in a nice quiet area. Just a hop away from MLK highway going into San Diego. Deborah was helpful and informative. Really nice getaway for a couple visiting San Diego to see the Red Sox beat the Padres. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Cozy Casita with Beautiful Gardens

  • 5 of 5

What a perfectly located cottage! My husband and our small dog really enjoyed this property that was clean, quiet and stocked with everything needed. It is 15 minutes away from Coronado and all the sights and attractions of San Diego. Deborah and Jerry were wonderful hosts as well as their pet dogs, Osso and Moe who greeted us and interacted well with our dog. We will definitely be back and recommend this lovely Casita.

Thank you for an unforgettable vacation!

Wonderful wedding retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I checked out many different places for our stay in San Diego from the 1st of July to the 6th of July. We were coming down to get married which we did on the 4th. I interviewed many different homeowners and looked at what seemed 100s of properties until I came across this gem.

The gardens the deck adequate living space seemed perfect and I was right. The property owners while right next door seemed like they weren't there at all and it was extremely private and wonderful.

The kitchen was well-stocked and we even had my entire wedding party over for a barbecue and a fire out on the deck. I can't say enough about the beautiful garden that is absolutely what sold me on the property from the very beginning and I wasn't disappointed. Waking up in the mornings to the beautiful birds singing and all of that Lush plant life was like being in a tropical garden. You won't be disappointed. I even left my wedding bouquet in the refrigerator when I left and Deborah was kind enough to box it up and send it to me.

I really liked her, she had a no-nonsense attitude and was very nice and accommodating. The entire place was clean comfortable and absolutely perfect. :-)

Excellent

What can one say about the beautiful Casita Encanta - it has beautiful gardens, well equipped house which was spotlessly clean. A barbq to cook on when u have finished for the day and you just want to chill. A two very pleasant dogs. The owners are extremely helpful & are always on hand to answer any questions you have or to draw u a map if you want to go somewhere different.

Definitely to be recommended.

My husband and I - and our two little dogs - spent the month of February at Deborah and Jerry's lovely guest house and felt very comfortable and welcome. The casita sits in the middle of a beautiful, peaceful garden. It was a very relaxing place to return to after the hustle and bustle of sightseeing in San Diego. The casita is modest, but was the right size for us. We did a lot of cooking, mainly just eating lunches out. The kitchen is modest, but with the gas cook top, toaster oven and gas grill on the deck, we had all we needed to prepare meals. Jerry and Deborah were great hosts, always ready to offer whatever we needed to enjoy our stay. Their dogs Osso and Moe were great hosts as well. There is so much to see and do in San Diego, but at times we were tempted to just sit on the deck and enjoy the lovely, fragrant flowers and plants surrounding us.
