An enthusiastic New York and Harlem resident, always ready to give the inside scoop and recommendations on Harlem or NYC. Very involved in the neighborhood. Designer and partner of Harlem Shake, the popular local restaurant. A product, landscape and interior designer with numerous awards and items in national museums. In fact, the building has also been published in several magazines and appeared in films. A world traveller, as I flew for Pan Am for over 7 years.
Dennis Decker purchased this apartment in 2000
This building is typical of the historic neighborhood. I was impressed that it still retained so much of its original form and material. However, I was very impressed by the atmosphere of the block, with friendly, open and involved neighbors.
The quiet friendly tree-lined street, proximity to express subway- only 4 stops to Times Square, closeness to neighborhood coffee shop and historic park, as well as the 125 St. corridor and Central Park.
I actually love sitting on the front stoop while having a coffee or a glass of wine. I love seeing the relaxed street life going by, and being a part of it. Since my block is dominated by private brownstones, rather than apartment buildings, it has a friendlier, small town feeling than most other neighborhoods.
This was our second stay with Denis and like the first time we had a wonderful time everyone knows New York is a fabulous city, but only some know what great accomodation Harlem Hideaway has to offer it is without fault and Denis's hospitality is second to none. We hope to return soon, thanks again we will surely recommend to our friends.
Dennis is a terrific host. The Garden unit is spacious, well-appointed and extremely comfortable. I would highly recommend staying in this unit. We had a terrific time in Harlem and around NYC.
The place was lovely, even better than it appeared in the photos published. We had very quiet nights and a lovely, quite sophisticated neighborhood. It was a great place to return after a hectic sight seeing-museum going-walking around day. Felt like home.
The subway is just around the corner and in 15 minutes you are downtown. There are good grocery shopping places around.
Dennis was more than helpful, and arranged things for us to stay when the airport was closed and we didn't have where to go.
We would surely return to Harlem Hideaway Apartment, it was extremely comfortable. Even the neighbor was so kind!

Have been to NYC many times. Had always wanted to stay in a brownstone apartment that reflected a perfect balance of modernization, and vintage character. We found it with Harlem Hideaway. We stayed in the garden apartment. This building was constructed in 1895 (think I got the year right, if not, then close). Original hardwood floors, original fireplace, footed bathtub with a rainfall shower head, cool vintage sink and mirror. The bedroom has a patio with a cover and is privately fenced, and then opens out into a common patio area. There is a large walk in closet that also houses a washer/dryer. The sofa opens out to make a queen bed, however we did not need it as it was just us two. The neighborhood is very quiet, and we felt very safe at the apartment, and walking to and from the subway (3blocks away). Dennis met us upon our arrival (he owns the building, and lives there as well). He was very informative and accommodating. This was by far the best experience we have had staying in NYC. It is a bit of a ways from the main tourists attractions, but if you buy a metro card (30$ for 7 days, for unlimited rides), stay on the #2 or #3 train, it is extremely fast getting to the main attractions. Definately faster than using a car or taxi on the top side, even if you are staying in midtown.
We have found the place to stay now each time we visit the great NYC.
Loved the brownstone ! It was close to the subway and we were able to travel to and from the city in very little time. In no time we were so comfortable we referred to it as " going home " each evening. Dennis' hospitality is not to be matched and such a wealth of information.
