The Garden Apartment was expertly renovated by an award winning designer, and features a large bedroom and an exceptional vintage bathroom, wood floors, decorative fireplace in the living room, lighting fixtures on dimmers, two ceiling fans and original wood details. It has a color video intercom to the front door of the building. The windows north and south provide refreshing cross-ventilation. There is a 2 unit wall mounted air conditioner/heater in the apartment (bedroom and living room). It is heated by original radiators in the winter. Free WiFi.
The apartment is quite private with a separate outside entrance with its own outside light. There is an interior hall rack for bags and coats. Lending umbrellas are available for when it rains.
The living room looks south with two windows south through a beautiful tree to the quiet street life below. Internal wood shutters provide privacy. The living room is furnished with a sofabed, a side table, a 46' wall-mount LED flat screen TV, a dining table and 4 chairs. It has a radio iPod loaded with an iPod with a Harlem Hideaway jazz/blues play list. The shelving unit contains a library of interesting and unique books. The original 120 year old drawer cabinet separates the kitchen from the dining/living room area. There is plenty of room in the drawers to use it as a dresser if the living room as used as additional sleeping area. There is a 3 speed fan in with a dimmer light in the living room area and a dining table with 4 chairs and an adjustable dimmer light above the dining room table.
Opening onto the living room you will find the open kitchen equipped with a deep sink with rinsing spout, a garbage disposal, a modern 4 burner gas stove with oven, a double door refrigerator with bottom freezer and an icemaker, a built-in microwave/fan, toaster, a knife set, a dishwasher (with detergent) and all necessary cookware and utensils as well as a coffee maker, coffee and tea. The surfaces are high end stone/conglomerate. There are plenty of plugs and under counter lighting. There is a slide-out garbage/ recycle cabinet. The cabinets are all wood finished and backsplashes 100 year old subway tile.
The all white full bathroom has a vintage claw foot bathtub with shower fixture, shampoo and body soap, towels, extra toilet paper, a built-in cabinet, vintage sink, hair dryer, outlets, and a vintage art deco lit medicine cabinet with hairspray. It also has an exhaust fan. The wainscoting is clear glass subway tiles. The floor is all original 120 year old original tiles. There is even a dimmer for the retro light fixture. All fixtures are chrome.
The hall to the bedroom has a closet stocked with cleaning items.
The large bedroom facing north to the beautiful private patio of the brownstone has a walk-n closet with a washer/dryer and a full length mirror on the door. The bedroom has sliding screened glass doors with a view of a very quiet, peaceful deck area. There are sheer curtains for privacy as well as an electric bar gate which lowers and raises at the touch of a button. The bedroom is furnished with a queen size bed with adjustable individual reading lights, a radio/iPod player with jazz/blues playlist on iPod, a bedside table and a vintage chest of drawers. Above the bedroom door is a transom to allow airflow while the door is shut. Since the bedroom faces the back, it is furthest away from any street noise.
The private outside plank terrace is perfect for casual dining, cocktails or coffee. There is a charming adjustable striped extension wall awning for your use as well, in case of rain. Beyond the private terrace is a beautiful backyard area paved in cobblestones with secured benches and attractive plantings. Huge birch trees shade the area as well as provide privacy. A barbeque is also available for outdoor cooking.

Ultimate attention to detail!
Dennis' lovely upper brownstone home is the best in which we have stayed in New York. Details such as fresh flowers and lit candles on our arrival were so welcoming. This garden flat was beyond the expectations created from the photos. I would recommend to all and would rebook.

Great property - you will not be disappointed!
We stayed here late August with our teenage daughter. Dennis was away on our arrival date but arranged for Ron to meet us. His enthusiasm for Harlem/New York could not be matched!
Having previously stayed in NY hotels it was great to enjoy the space this apartment offered. The air con & room fans were more than welcome. Kitchen was well equipped with tea & coffee supplied.
Beds were of the highest quality and the garden a delight.
As others have mentioned, ideally placed for subway access and make sure you pay a visit to the Apollo Theatre!

Plenty of amenities including wifi, TV, A/C, room fans, music set up the ought the home, washer/dryer, etc.! Truely a way feel at home while on vacation. I would highly recommend and plan to stay here again! Great place!
We (3 retired Canadians - a couple and single woman) spent 8 nights at the Harlem Hideaway. The first 3 nights we were in the Garden Suite and the rest of the time in the Parlor Suite.
Dennis is an excellent host and both units are very comfortable, functional and beautifully designed. While they have all the modern conveniences, the historic character of the building has been well preserved. Dennis was very responsive to our questions and quickly took care of anything we mentioned. He also stocks the units with many essentials (coffee, tea, laundry soap) which we really appreciate when we are travelling.
The location was also great - a short walk to the subway in an interesting and welcoming neighbourhood. We felt comfortable everywhere at all times of day. We were also able to take the M60 public bus from La Guardia to within walking distance of the apartment. Groceries, ATMs and restaurants were close by. It's an easy walk to Central Park and many of the museums along 5th Avenue. While we were out and about lots - locally we enjoyed Harlem Shakes (great salads), Amy Ruth's and Happy Hour at Sexy Taco. We also took in the Studio Museum of Harlem on 125th Street.
The Garden Suite was large and deluxe with a lovely private outside patio where we enjoyed breakfasts. The Parlor Suite is smaller but still had more than everything we needed.
If you are retired like us, you can get Senior Discounted Metro passes from the staff person in the booth at the 116th Station. The cards are also available at other stations that have a staffed booth. For $2.75 (the price of 1 ride) you get a Metro Card that is good for 2 rides - so it's half price. But, you can only buy the cards 1 at a time. So, when we were in a station with a person in the booth we also purchased an extra card.

Like Being on a Movie Set! Fantastic!
First of all, DO NOT STAY HERE!! The reason? I don't want it booked up as this is by FAR our favorite place we've ever stayed...NYC or otherwise. We WANT it to be available for future trips, so just scroll along and ignore this listing. :-)
Obviously, the above comment was said in jest...as this is a FANTASTIC place to stay in NYC. The block, as I mention in the title, is like a set from an NYC based TV show or movie. The apartment is wonderfully designed and furnished, and simply beautiful. It is on the ground floor with your own entrance from the street, but it is also airy and bright.
Every detail has been considered, from all lighting that is on a dimmer to the Ipod set up in the apartment with 72 hours of jazz and blues...all of which work to really set the mood of being in an authentic Harlem spot. The apartment is well-appointed, with great appliances, beds, and linens and beautifully decorated. The place is also spotless. We cooked our own breakfast every day, and there is plenty to make you feel at home during the times you aren't out exploring the city.
The location is great for everything Harlem AND NYC has to offer. You are blocks from the Subway, and a 10-15 minute ride to Times Square and 30 mins max all the way to the tip of Manhattan and the Staten Island Ferry. You are a quick walk from Central Park. And this was our first time to Harlem but WOW! The neighborhood is so friendly and there are so many options for eating, hanging out, and feeling like an "authentic" New Yorker.
Equally as important is the comfort, hospitality, and resource that the owner Dennis is for your trip. Dennis is available for helpful tips on the neighborhood and the city, and makes you feel so welcomed into his Hideaway. We have found our spot for every future stay in NYC...and I'm certain after staying at the Harlem Hideaway you will too. Just don't book the week I want it!

This is our second year at the Hideaway and once again, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The property has become our "home" in NYC and we plan to re-book for next year--Privacy, convenience, proximity to all NYC has to offer and a great place to come "home" to after the theater, dinner out, the Museums or what-ever. Activity and Interests
Harlem Hideaway is on West 119th Street in Harlem, New York City. Marcus Garvey Park is just over a block away, with a public swimming pool, and the famed Central Park is only 9 blocks south of this rental. There is a grocery store and laundromat within 2 blocks, and the nearby Lenox Avenue offers a variety of restaurants and convenience stores. Also on Lenox Avenue, you will find Harlem Shake and the Red Rooster Restaurant, staples of Harlem. The West 125th Street shopping corridor includes Apolloo Theater, Studio Museum of Harlem and major stores, such as H & M and Marshall’s, and on Frederick Douglass Avenue you will find restaurant row.
Public transportation is convenient with the 2/3 subway station just over 3 blocks away, offering both express and local train service. The A/B/C line is also nearby, about 4 blocks away.

“The quiet friendly tree-lined street, proximity to express subway- only 4 stops to Times Square, closeness to neighborhood coffee shop and historic park, as well as the 125 St. corridor and Central Park. I actually love sitting on the front stoop while having a coffee or a glass of wine. I love seeing the relaxed street life going by, and being a part of it. Since my block is dominated by private brownstones, rather than apartment buildings, it has a friendlier, small town feeling than most other neighborhoods.”
