About the property

4 Bedrooms + Office/5th bedroom, 4 Full Baths (Sleeps 8 to 10+)

Casa Buendía is where modern architecture meets the rain forest above Costa Rica´s beautiful South Pacific coast. If you are looking for a contemporary home-base from which to explore and enjoy Costa Rica´s most amazing natural assets, look no further!

Spectacular coastal and mountain views abound in this 5,000 sq ft 4 bedroom luxury hideaway, which includes a large office with private bath (converting to a 5th bedroom if needed). Swimming pool, Jacuzzi, and Palapa-covered terraces beautifully contrast the clean modernistic lines of the house. The main floor surrounds a small inner garden courtyard and fountain. Large, bright fully appointed kitchen has granite counters, gas stove, and wet-bar. Adjacent dining and living rooms boast double-height vaulted ceiling, accessed from a gallery-styled passage and stunning vestibule entrance.

Sleeping Quarters on Top Floor w/ Best Views!: On the upper floor, an elevated walkway separates the swank, private master bedroom from another VIP guest suite, along with two more bedrooms, each with balconies and breathtaking views. A giant 3-car garage, laundry room and storage area comprise the lower floor below.

Uncommon Combination of Nature and Luxury: Casa Buendía is located on 2..5 acres (1 hectare) of forested land, bordered by a mountain stream on the westernmost limit, accessible via a private footpath. Toucans, howler and white faced monkeys are common attractions. Just to the south lies Ballena National Marine Park and Corcovado National Park, while Manuel Antonio National Park is a short drive away to the North. Surfing, sport-fishing, diving, hiking, birdwatching, mountain biking, horseback riding, sea and river kayaking and rafting, are just some of the activities offered in the area. Spa treatment, maid service and gourmet food preparation are available on request.

About Estrella Barrantes & Vince Ruddy

We are an American-Costa Rican couple married for over 20 years. We are world travelers and active outdoor action sports afficionados. We bought land in Dominical after falling in love with the place during surf trip getaways, back in 1998. Ten years later, we decided to build our dream house and share it with family, friends, and guests!

Estrella Barrantes & Vince Ruddy purchased this villa in 2009

Why Estrella Barrantes & Vince Ruddy chose Puntarenas

We are in Dominical because it offers so much to so many kinds of adventurers! We have been to Asia, Africa, the Middle East, a throughout North, Central, and South America, and we have yet to find a place that is so natural, wild, scenic, and fun. Amazing surf and lush forest waterfalls drew us in. Eventually, we discovered other options, including kayaking in the Savegre river, exploring Corcovado National Park (one of the most bio-diverse locations on the planet). It is far enough from the big cities and overbuilt tourist traps, but still close enough to make for a 2.5 hour drive on the new highway from San Jose.

Guestbook comments from the owner

(transcribed from Casa Buendia guestbook): The house is spectacular! Loved the vegetation, views and tropical rainforest. Recommend Guapil beach, kids loved to boogie and play soccer there. Juan and Glenda were super friendly and made our stay more pleasant-- loved feeling so pampered and well taken care of. Will definitely enjoy coming back to this fabulous retreat

Amazing house, view and location

  • 4 of 5

The house is truly amazing with a grand view of the pacific. Estrella, Luis and the caretaking couple was all very kindly and helpfull. Our only issues related to the kitchen. Usually I would expect a luxury house such as this having a better kitchen (no dishwasher, stuck drawers, dull knives, old cooking equipment etc.)

Other than that it is highly recommendable for a large family, group of friends or alike

Owner's Response: Based on this helpful feedback, we have asked our caretaker to sharpen all kitchen knives. We will also review all other kitchen equipment and make upgrades in the near future. Really appreciate this feedback! As for installing a dishwasher, most guests (including the owners when we stay) do not mind hand washing, given the rain forest location and availability of housekeeping help. However, we may revisit our present "eco-friendly" approach, if we receive dishwasher requests from other guests going forward.

This house is absolutely spectacular! We were 8 people. 4 adults and 3 twenty something year-olds and a teen. Plenty of room for everyone.the view in the morning is amazing and un forgettable. We were in the pool every morning by 6 am. We arranged to have breakfast every morning. Amazing every morning. The home care takers will do absolutely anything for you and they are a delight! If renting a car, a four wheel drive is highly recommend!! We would totally book here again! We will highly recommend to everyone!!!

Really nice house and grounds, would stay there again no question.

  • 4 of 5

The house is really nice and fits 10 comfortably. The pool is amazing and we spent a lot of time in it, especially at night. The pool was warm naturally from the sun and has the most amazing view of the ocean. One thing we were expecting is a heated hot tub judging off the photos, and there is a hot tub with jets and stuff on the side of the pool, but it is no warmer than the actual pool. The house keepers Lenny and Sandra are awesome and really nice people, they stay on site at the house while you are staying in the basement and gives it a safer feeling. (not that we ever felt unsafe) The drive up the hill to the house is kinda long and bumpy but we felt like it was worth it for the view. Overall we loved the vacation and would totally go back again.

Absolutely stunning house and view.

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at the Casa Buiendia . The views were to die for. The house was amazing. The way the wildlife was around you on all sides of the house. No matter what balcony you were on there was something to see. The pool was great over looking one of the most beautiful views you'll find anywhere. Lenny and Sandra were a big help. You could interact with them as little or as much as you wanted. They even cooked us dinner one night. She would do your laundry if you wanted which believe me was great. Who wants to do laundry when your on vacation. If your looking to rent a house in Costa Rica and you love seeing wildlife like Toucans, humming birds, monkeys and a whole lot more, then this is the place. It sits halfway up a mountain that you will find a 4x4 is very useful. Has a little bar that is just down the the road that is a great place to go eat and has live entertainment. It's close to both Dominical Beach and Uvita for shopping or site seeing or eating. We actually cooked at the house a lot as it has everything you need in the well equipped kitchen. The whole house does not have air conditioning but the bedrooms do, so it is quite comfortable at night and during the day the pool keeps you cool. It's perfect. Again thank you Luis, Lenny and Sandra for a most pleasant stay. Hope to come back next year.

Exactly as advertised!

  • 5 of 5

We had three generations (six in total) of our family enjoy Buendia for eight days in January. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. The house is beautiful, with a comfortable layout that allowed us to be together when we wanted and allowed us time alone if that was our desire.

We lounged by the pool, cooked meals in the kitchen and on the gas grill, played backgammon, and read, all in one of the most beautiful setting imaginable. One of the real treats was when a tribe of Howler Monkeys went right past the house, two with babies in tow on their backs providing us with a couple of hours of entertainment.

While there was a TV, we did not turn it on once. From the wonderful trips that Sonia Leon scheduled for us from the Uvita information center to the gorgeous environs we were in, there was not need to turn this on.

The husband and wife team that stayed on the property were helpful. With the benefit of GoogleTranslate, we never had an issue communicating.

We went zip-lining, on a evening nature hike, snorkled at Cano Island, kayaked the mangroves, and had a stellar visit to Corcovado. All well done trips with expert guides. For dinner, our visit to Ylang Ylang was a highlight. Expensive, but wonderful.
