From the sweeping heights of the Santa Barbara foothills, this newly-remodeled mid-century modern home commands breathtaking views of the city and the sea beyond. Its sleek architecture and distinctive craftsmanship, combined with the use of natural materials in the open, uncluttered interiors, have created a serene environment bathed in natural light. An outdoor cascading waterfall welcomes you to the main level Great Room/Living Room where rich teak walls, walnut floors and seamless glass walls combine to create a warm glow throughout the entire home.
The mood of the Living Room is set by the inviting leather sectional sofa and retro gas fireplace where flames flicker above smooth grey stones. For fun, 3D glasses have been provided to accompany the 60" flat screen HDTV for movie-night viewing. Another striking feature of this home are the Nana sliding glass doors that fold completely open to create a seamless flow from the living spaces out to expansive wrap-around decks of tropical Ipe wood.
Enjoy meal preparation in the smart kitchen equipped with state-of-the-art Dacor appliances. With honed black granite counters, teak walls and cabinets and stainless steel accents, your culinary choices are unlimited. Diners perched at the breakfast bar that seats 3 can share the cook's efforts or join in conversations in the Living Room. Or, more formally, a lovely illusion of indoor-outdoor dining is experienced at the nearby glass dining table poised before the Nana doors.
The guest bedrooms are located on the main floor. With a wall of glass, the west bedroom faces the shady hillside with sounds echoing from the entry fountain. A custom queen-size platform bed is built-into a wall of local sandstone that literally melds into the garden. The east bedroom with queen-size bed offers glass doors to the wrap around deck and a full bath with walk-in shower.
If work responsibilities beckon during your stay, the office is a calm space that holds a contemporary desk overlooking views of the grassy hillside and the rock-lined seasonal creek just outside.
Descend the glass-lined stairway to the lower-level Master Suite. Continuing in minimalist style, the bedroom is peaceful and spacious with a platform King-size bed, sitting area and private balcony with sweeping coastal views.
The Master Bath provides an elegant spa experience from the large soaking tub to the scenic views from the glass shower. Ultimately, however, the crowning touch is the full-size Finlandia Sauna where the effects of the most stress filled day or the aching muscles from the most energetic activities will melt away.
A bonus room off the Master Bedroom balcony has been converted to an awesome home gym with a club-style spinning bike, weights, ball, bands and yoga mats. There is no athletic club in town with this spectacular view! Swing open the Nana doors and enjoy cool breezes while you ride.

We had first explored staying at the Executive Escape two years ago, and when a last minute Summer trip this year was planned, we were ecstatic to discover the house was available. The long-delayed trips here exceeded our expectations and the house provided a wonderfully aesthetic respite, with enough space for ourselves and our two grown children to relax, cook, and enjoy the beautiful views. Our five days in Santa Barbara also gave us a chance to explore the area, from wine country to the beaches. Thank you to the gods of serendipity for making this stay possible!

Awesome contemporary house!
My husband and I enjoyed our week at this stunning contemporary house. I would have given it 5 stars but there was a small drawback. On the weekend, our grown kids and their significant others joined us. The downstairs master bedroom area is wonderful but there is no way to close it off from the rest of the house. If people are in the living room upstairs, the sound carries directly into the master bedroom.
On the plus side, the high end kitchen appliances and the grill were a great bonus since we love to cook. The doors to the deck unfold fully to give the feeling of being outside while enjoying the comfort of the inside and the fantastic Santa Barbara weather was lovely. We had a steady viewing of hummingbirds in the tree just off the deck. (We had to close things up a couple of times because of a visiting unseen but clearly close by skunk.) The orange tree by the garage provided a nice treat a couple of mornings.
Architectural gem on a steep hillside
The highlight of our stay was the beauty and finely crafted elegance of the house itself--a recently renovated mid-century. On a steep hillside, there are fabulous views towards the Mission, Seminary, ocean and Channel Islands. The kitchen was well equipped (important for us since we cook all our own meals when traveling). It was a delightful place to entertain our daughter and son-in-law for an evening meal. The sauna was the best we've ever experienced (that's a huge compliment coming from my husband a Swede). The main problem for us with this property (and the reason we will not stay here again even though we come to Santa Barbara annually) was the number of steps from the street or up from the garbage to the master bedroom level (below the main floor), when carrying heavy luggage (20 steps). The steps were also an issue when carrying my portable, plein air easel and art supplies up from the garage level daily (32 steps from garage to study-used-as-studio--on the top floor.
This property is a luxurious experience in modern architectural living. The views are amazing from the many decks. The beds are very comfortable and all furniture, appliances, dishware and cookware were of high quality. We loved the great expanses of glass and use of wood throughout. We highly recommend this property.
Beautifully designed home with a few nits
The house was gorgeous, and the view was beyond compare. Also, its location in Santa Barbara was perfect. Access to shops, restaurants, beach, parks and markets was perfect. Outside of the bustle, but within easy reach.
Nits: There was no privacy for the master bedroom suite. If the tv was on in the living room, it was noisy in the master bedroom. outdoor seating was mediocre. Pillows were soiled or torn. lounge chairs were useless for actual adults. This needs immediate attention.
