About Peter Mainguy & Heather Carle
I am currently the General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton Millenia in Singapore and have been in the hospitality industry for 30 years throughout Europe, Africa, Middle East/Gulf and now Asia. I consider Maine home and will eventually stay there once my career ends. I have two other properties in Liberty Maine as I love the topography, people, fresh air, simplicity, wilderness with key infrastructure at your doorstep along with the incredible charm of the coastal area between Bar Harbor and Camden.
Peter Mainguy & Heather Carle purchased this House in 1993
Why Peter Mainguy & Heather Carle chose Ellsworth
I went to Husson University in Bangor Maine. Having grown up in Europe, I had never seen such pristine wilderness within reach of major infrastructure at an affordable price. I fell in love with the idea of owning a camp on the water immediately and call it home as I travelled the world. I finally found this place on Branch that ticked off all the boxes and over the years, built it from its simple seasonal beginnings into my idea of what a lakeside camp should look, feel like and offer. I wanted a place that was easy to access, close to everything, offer great swimming from the shore yet be able to pull up in a sailboat with a keel, stunning water views, be close to the waters edge, and to top it all off, feel like I was in a very isolated area.
What makes this House unique
Again, besides the incredible location just off route 1, lake centered, the lot is surrounded by the best homes on the lake, just on the cusp of a small bay overlooking a little private public island. The small beach is ideal for swimming off of and the dive tower offering kids and adults alike hours of entertainment. Mornings are exceptionally tranquil with picturesque sunsets in the evenings. The moments of roasting some marsh-mellows over an open fire at the lakes edge while sipping some wine or enjoying a beer will forever be etched in your memory. I have pulled in Salmon, trout and bass off my dock in the early mornings but mostly enjoy the swimming and snorkeling just off the property. I love boating to the 2 public beaches. One is right across the lake from the property next to a public boat launch and the other at the Southern tip under a bridge next to the dam. There are a few small islands in the Northern end. What I call a benefit is the fact of many unmarked rocks throughout the lake fun to explore and a nightmare for non lake dwellers keeping public boating significantly down. Branch Lake is essentially a giant well with its deepest point of 124 feet!

away from it all, ideal family get away
This is our second time staying here and we love it! Would come here every year but it fills up so fast. Peter and Heather continue to invest in the property which is great to see; new bathrooms and furniture since our last visit in 2014. Great place if you like a more relaxed low-key trip. plenty to do in the water, high dive a definite plus. Rented jet ski's which were a huge hit - Branch Lake is much more relaxed about the water sports then most other lakes in Maine which made it super fun for the kids when riding the skis.
Absolutely Beautiful and Peaceful!!
This is a beautiful place. There is plenty of room for everybody both inside and out. Very impressed how attentive the owners are even with the small stuff. I loved hearing the loons and the water is so clear. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a quite, spacious place to vacation. If you forget anything, Ellsworth has it all. Bar Harbor is close by too but for us, we just did not want to leave this beautiful lakefront property.
Great family fun!
This is the place to take a vacation for a large family group. Older family members can swim in the deeper water, young ones can play in the dirt and shallow water. My 11 yo loved fishing late afternoons. There were also boats for kayaking.
The owners offer many options to make staying there very comfortable and pleasant, I would recommend this property easily.
Wonderful lake property
The lake is great, the house inviting. Dock, kitchen, bathrooms, beds, towels, kayaks, Adirondack chairs, all top quality. Stairs are steep; jet skis are infrequent but annoying. We enjoyed eating dinner on the deck, swimming to the island, watching sunsets from the dock, making s’mores at the fire pit, playing charades in the living room, making memories...
Perfect place to stay for the holidays!
This lake house was perfect to celebrate Christmas with my family! We were 11 people in the house, 7 adults and 5 young children and there was plenty of space for everyone. It has everything you need for a vacation. It has incredible views of the lake. Heather, the owner was very responsive and easy to communicate with. We really enjoyed our stay!
Couldn't have been happier with our stay at Heather and Peter's place. The house is in a great location on Branch Lake and the sand beach, hammock, swimming dock and diving platform made it hard to go inside. The house seems like it has been completely renovated in the past few years and included everything we could have asked for in a vacation rental. Heather was a pleasure to work with and made getting in and out a breeze. Overall a 10 out of 10.
There are many must see sites along the coast from Acadia National Park, climb the 'Bee Hive' Fort Knox in Bucksport, dining in Camden but something exciting nearby is climbing the Fire Tower on Bald Mountain 31.2 miles from the camp. Drive North on 1A towards Bangor a few miles and take the road on your right clued Winkumpaugh, after a few miles take a right onto Happytown Road which leads onto Bald Mountain Road. Very shortly thereafter is a road to your right as the road bends called Johnsons Road. The path is a hundred or so yards down the road. Its possible for the very brave to drive up the path as its pure rock face, but very steep. If your brakes fail on decent...... The Fire Tower offers stunning views and is abandoned but safe/sturdy.
For those of you wanting to rent a motorized boat, there is lake delivery & pickup from downeastboatrentals and owner is Robert Marshal and can be reached on 207-565 2087 or 207-460 6898.
