About Staci Helman-Smith

Welcome to our home away from home, Big Bear Lodge!

We are farmers from northeast Indiana who found our favorite retreat in the mountains of Tennessee more than 25 years ago. Since then, we have been vacationing here each year with our children and later, our grandchildren too. After years of renting, we decided to find a cabin of our own, to be able to add our own personal touches, and make it 'ours' when we gather for holidays.

Each room was decorated and named by different members of our family. Our master bedroom is the Suite Retreat. Each of our three children decorated their rooms - The Bear Cave, Moose Den and Majestic Hideaway. The entire family decorated the John Deere room, a nod to our livelihood, and the M&M room is for our grandchildren.

We hope that you enjoy the cabin as much as we do!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Just wanted to tell you and your folks that we had a wonderful time last week. The cabin is just great and so well outfitted! It worked for my family beautifully--the 3 couples all had their own space, my granddaughters enjoyed the bunk room, my bachelor son did well in the John Deere room, and the family voted me into the upstairs suite--way too big for me but, heck, a little luxury now and again is OK!

We all took a night to make dinner with one reserved to eat all the leftovers. I decided I'd take everyone out on our last night to avoid my cooking assignment and we had a great time at the Crystelle Creek Restaurant keeping the singer busy with our requests. I lost track of how many times my younger granddaughter added to the singer's tip jar! My one son elected to do Pizza on his night and we had been kidding him about him having to go out and finding a takeout miles and miles away! And lo and behold you clued him into a resource for DELIVERY! . We could not believe a driver would head up into those hills! We're lucky at home if a driver will go more than a mile on the straight!

This trip had an element of deja vu for me. More years ago than I care to admit, my husband and I took our 3 oldest kids to the Smokey Mountains areas of NC and TN and I always thought it would be great to return--and we never did. Sooooooo, when I decided to take the whole family on a week's vacation (we've never had this much time all together since my oldest got married 20 years ago!) it seemed like an option--if we could get everyone with a week available at the same time. Well, it worked out just great and we saw and did so much--Dollywood and Rafting and Zip lining and Forbidden Cavern. We rented a boat for a day on Douglas Lake. We hiked and explored and checked out many of the arts and crafts locations, found some great barbecue. We saw wildlife and enjoyed playing games and just sitting on the rockers watching a downpour or two and the sun breaking through the "smoke" in the mornings. We found Pigeon Forge a bit too commercialized to our liking, but Gatlinburg was just about right! Now there's talk of having to do something like this again...

Oh, and lest I forget, the speed with which the A/C problem was corrected was remarkable!

Thanks for helping us have a memorable experience!

Perfect place for a family retreat

  • 5 of 5

There were eight adults and four children in our family and we enjoyed every inch of this lovely cabin. Having two large gathering places allowed us all enough space to watch sports and Hallmark movies at the same time. The hot tub was a hit and having a bathroom for every bedroom was appreciated. The televisions were perfect and I can't think of one thing I would change. We were close enough to town to be able to see the aquarium and the outlet shopping. We also saw some of the recent fire devastation. Our hearts go out to those affected. Thank you for sharing this property and Merry Christmas.

Half a Century Birthday Celebration 10-6-2016 to 10-10-2016

  • 5 of 5

What an Awesome weekend we had!! We had a group of 10 girls, all either nurses or physicians celebrating 2 friends 50th birthday. The house was perfect for our group with everyone having plenty of room to sleep and the 6 bathrooms always a plus!! The mornings started with our coffee on the deck overlooking the mountains. It was so peaceful! Exactly what we needed. I was so pleased with how well equipped the kitchen was with pots, pans, utensils, dishes etc. I have stayed in multiple cabins in this area and I must say, this one was the best equipped for cooking!!

The beds were all very comfortable. The house was very clean. I loved that the table could seat all of us for our breakfast and even more room with the barstools!

Great location close to both Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. We had an amazing experience at Climb Works! We also went horseback riding at stables not far from the cabin.

The owner was excellent to work with!! We had originally booked a house in Florida and the reservation got cancelled by the owner. I was slightly hesitant to rebook afraid of this happening again. Stacey was so friendly and made me feel at ease!! Very easy to work with. She always answered my emails within 24 hours and gave clear instructions and directions.

We all had do much fun that the girls all want me to start planning another adventure. If we decide to come back to Tennessee, I will definitely stay at this cabin again!!

Wonderful Family Vacation 2016

  • 4 of 5

This is a beautiful cabin with a very nice view. Enjoyed our morning coffee on the porch. Beautiful Master Suite, but one of the other bedrooms and bath is very small. It would be best to plan on this one for the kids. Kitchen was well equipped, but could use more dish towels and a few pans could be replaced. It was, certainly, adequate for our needs.

The management was wonderful and responded very quickly and efficiently to our every need.

Would, definitely, recommend this cabin for a large family vacation. There were 14 of us and we were very comfortable.

Our family had a wonderful time in this beautiful lodge

  • 5 of 5

Staci, We were so very happy with Big Bear Lodge and only have a couple things we think could maybe be improved on. One issue is the hot tub we've owned hot tubs in the past and we thought the water was really cloudy and didn't look all that clean. The children really enjoyed it but the adults were hesitant to go in. The location of the lodge is excellent with the privacy.....14 of us and we're pretty loud.....but we didn't have to worry about the noise level. We enjoyed so many events in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge - ziplining, white water rafting, dollywood, dollywood splash country, atv's, go carts, putt putt golf, the Escape game, mountain coaster, ski lifts, shopping and the smoky mountain trails. We ate dinner at the lodge (seating for everyone and two grills to cook on that worked perfectly) every day except the last and that was our favorite time together. We enjoyed chatting about the different things each had done throughout the day and sharing our experiences with each other was awesome. We did eat out on our last night there at the Alamo Steak House in Pigeon Forge and it was excellent....a great way to end a perfect vacation!

We arrived on Father's Day and it just so happened the Cleveland CAVS were playing in the final game and they WON the Championship. I have to say this was the highlight of the trip and it was great it took place on our first day together - this was a first family vacation with all my kids and grandchildren present and a memory that will certainly last forever. The tears of joy are something to remember but impossible to relate. My 12 year old grandson made the comment he was so happy to witness this event at the age of 12. I can tell you it was also great at to witness it at the age of 66 with my family with me! We were hoping to watch the game in HD but, believe me, this game was unbelievable and the excitement made us unaware of not having HD!!

We arrived in separate vehicles (4 total) and the parking was never an issue....easy in and out. The lodge was equipped with everything we needed in the kitchen and the bedrooms were all great and very was great with everyone having their own showers.

Customer service is excellent and I also thank you for the quick refund of our damage deposit, I received it in less than a week of being home.

We would certainly consider staying here again if we can put another family vacation together!! Thanks from all of us for the memories :) Sally Skidmore

This cabin is amazing! It was plenty big enough for our group of 15!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful trip to the Smoky's, which was made even better by Big Bear Lodge! We had a group of 15, 9 adults and 6 kids ranging in age from 3-14, and we still had plenty of room! The older kids really enjoyed the hot tub and pool table, and the littles enjoyed the toys they found in the kids bedroom!

As a power-wheelchair user, I'm always kinda skeptical when a property is listed as accessible, but this place exceeded my expectations! The accessible bedroom has plenty of space and the bathroom was fully accessible! The doors and hallway were large enough for me to get through and turn in! It was a little difficult for me to make the turn into the front door due to the stairs, but that was no problem since there were two more ways that I could enter without any difficulty!

It wasn't a problem, but a suggestion for improvement would be to have some "kid friendly" dishes and cups. We reminded the kids to be careful with the plates and glasses, but it was a little difficult for the little ones to carry their plates due to the weight. Like I said, it wasn't a problem, just something we noticed.

Overall, our stay was awesome and the only thing that could have made it better was more time to spend there! I would definitely recommend this place to any big families, families with kids, and individuals with disabilities! Take it from a wheelchair user, this place is accessible! Thank you so much Staci, it was a pleasure working with you!
