Steps From the Sand Charming Beach Front Cottage Located on Makaha Surfing Beach

Property Details

Updated: Oct 20, 2016
Cottage, Studio + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

The front yard is steps away from one of the world’s most beautiful sandy beaches. There is great snorkeling, swimming, boogie boarding right in front of the cottage, depending on the swell, of coarse. Surfers can paddle out to the break from the front yard. This is also a perfect place to relax and just enjoy the ocean views. Besides other great views there are SPECTACULAR sunsets just about every evening. There are also early morning “full moon sets”, and occasional rainbows out over the ocean. (Makaha is on the dry side of the island). Watch dolphins, sea turtles and spouting whales from the front yard. This is truly a gorgeous one-of-a kind place!

The cottage is clean with off white tile throughout. There are two queen beds; one in the main studio and another in a screened porch sitting/sleeping room. Visitors can hear the ocean lapping on the sand from both rooms. A bathroom with a shower/bath tub connects the rooms from a patio. The street-side patio is very private and screened in. There are tables and chairs on both patios as well as in the main studio. There is also a gas barbeque on the ocean side patio. Both patios are covered.

The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes and pans. There is a large refrigerator with an ice maker, a two burner gas stove, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, blender, coffee grinder and maker.

Located one hours drive from Honolulu/Waikiki/North Shore, Makaha is close enough for day trips, but far enough away to enjoy a more natural, peaceful and casual Hawaii far away from the typical tourist hustle and bustle.

Makaha is known as the jewel of the Leeward Coast. A visitor can enjoy an authentic island style vacation. Makaha is famous for it’s winter surfing and was home to one of the early big wave surfing contests; the Makaha International Surfing Contest that was started the early 50s. Because of the 'winter' north swell the beach sand shifts dramatically from one end of the beach to the other. During the months of September/October to May /June (this varies depending on the direction of the swell) there is a large sand beach in front of the house. During the summer months visitors have to walk down toward the point several lots for the sand beach.

There are also diving caves, turtles, dolphins, whales and spectacular sunsets. There is a golf course minutes away as well as the harbor where a visitor can take dolphin and whale watch excursions, and deep sea fishing charters are also available. Centuries ago Makaha Valley was home to a group of Hawaiians (and their ancestors the menehune) who lived solely from farming and fishing. There is a ceremonial lava rock structure (He'iau) that has been restored by the Bishop Museum and is interesting to visit. Other amenities are the majestic Wai'anae Mountains

It is an uncrowded area and usually always has a lovely breeze coming down the valley.

Keywords: Located on one of the world's most beautiful beaches (Makaha Beach), a visitor is able to relax and enjoy ocean sounds, waves and great ocean views. There are amazing sunsets that can be seen from the front patio and lawn as they are steps away from the pristine sandy beach and clear blue ocean. One of the best buys in Hawaii for ocean front stays

About the Owner

I am a retired high school teacher and textile artist (Hawaiian Wearable Art). My youth was spent surfing at Makaha in the mid-50s. I lived in the cottage for many years and taught at the local high school (Wai'anae). After retiring I dyed and printed silk and had a small workshop and boutique where I made and sold my clothing, sarongs, hats, and other creations. I have since moved to Honolulu where I live and have a rescue station and home for homeless cats. In case you are allergic to cats/dogs there are no animals in the cottage. A major part of the money I receive for cottage rentals goes to feeding and taking care of and daily feeding of 50 cats and dogs in need of food and shelter. In addition to the cats I take care of here I also daily feed four stations of feral cats and one station for two dogs. I still visit Makaha occasionally to swim and garden. The cottage is adjacent/attached to our family home where my sister Gloria lives and is the site manager. She is a quiet solitary person and is centered on the opposite side of the cottage. She will help out in an emergency, but not bother or invade anyone's privacy.

A paradise....In paradise

If you are looking for a 5 star hotel with all bells and whistles this is not your location..... If you are like us and wanted a quiet more private location on the sand this IS your spot. We loved this little cottage that was just like "home". It was nice having doors going.... and coming to and from our pretty much private beach for a meal or whatever we needed....We were able to drive a hour to skydive, horseback riding, swim with dolphins and return for our peaceful time away from the hustle and bustle on the pretty much private beach in our front yard....... We are SO thankful to have found this little gem and will be back to enjoy it again.....

private beach cottage

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a wonderful time at this cottage. As other reviews will state, this place is not for the caviar-eating, everything-has-to-be-perfect type of tourist. There are bugs, but the cute little geckos help keep their numbers down. No AC, but the fan works very well. The cottage is private, clean, and mostly quiet. Saturday night was filled with booming bass vehicles driving up and down the street. On the other hand, this place is NOT the rat race of Honolulu, and we were very thankful for that. Vicky is very easy to work with, and Gloria & Sean are friendly neighbors. The beach is amazing! The surf can sometimes be a little rough for amateur swimmers, but it's clean, quiet, and it's fun watching the surfers. The place has a very personal feel to it, allowing the renter to explore the history of the house and the family who lived here. Nice BBQ. No oven, but gas stove top & microwave. Next time we visit Oahu, I'll certainly check this place for availability.

So relaxing!

  • 4 of 5

We had such a peaceful relaxing time in this little bungalow on the beach. Listening to the waves crash, watching the sunset from the patio with a fruit and rum drink we blended ourselves. Snorkeling out to a top snorkeling destination that you can reach from the beach.

We ended up mostly staying in, cooking our meals, just really relaxing. There is a nice state park 6 miles up the road with lovely hiking and whale spotting. There are always turtles out front riding the waves.

Need to know--the surf and current are often very strong and at times the beach was posted for no swimming. There is no oven. There is a washing machine and a line to hang clothes. The ants will immediately find any crumb of food you leave behind. This became war for my husband! You share the yard with the main house but there are privacy barriers. The place has a camp feel about it, but we enjoyed the casualness of it. One star lost for the bugs and certain things that were a bit ramshackle (one screen door that was barely operable for example).

We would definitely return!

Owner's Response: I am taking that screen down because there is no need to use it with the screened in patio. aloha vicky

Cottage on the Beach

  • 4 of 5

Pros: backyard is the beach, cozy setting inside, nicely decorated, beautiful views, bbq access, backyard lights, hose to rinse off sand, washer was nice to have, you can hear the ocean from the bedroom but can also hear road noise, basic kitchen essentials (no oven but propane camp stove provided).

Cons: no AC (we visited in September and it was very very humid, almost unbearable to sleep at night), location is secluded but in a very poor town with limited access to variety of restaurants and things to do, an hour away from north shore, waikiki, etc. bad traffic to get back to the cottage at all times of the day from our experience, I also accidentally stepped on a cockroach in the middle of the night, which was startling.

Overall, this place is definitely for people that are looking to stay local during their vacation. We recommend going off summer season because of the humidity and lack of AC. Otherwise, the cottage itself, the beach, and views are worth it.

Quiet Country Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This cottage in Makaha is absolutely perfect if you want to get away from the rat race of Waikiki and Honolulu. My husband and I enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning! We nicknamed it our "love shack" where we had quiet dinners, watched gorgeous sunsets and took long morning walks on the beach. The cottage is not fancy, but it has all the amenities that you need and is very clean, comfortable, and private. We spent most of our time on the ocean view patio. The ocean is just steps away and the sound of the surf is your constant companion. Vicky is easy to work with and answered all of our questions, provided us with directions, was responsive to emails and phone calls. I highly recommend this property!

From the Owner

My mother bought this property in 1956. After surfing for a few years in Waikiki she went out to Makaha to surf and visit a friend who she met surfing at Waikiki. There was a for sale sign on the property nexr door. She took one look at the ocean and another look at the valley and said, 'this has to be mine.' She lived a wonderful long life there until her 99th year. She was an amazing athlete and artist. She spent the last part of her life writing Haiku Poetry. She can be seen on UTube-Betty Winstedt. There is currently a book in progress about her life.
