Guestbook comments from the owner
Our stay was enjoyable. The house and property were great.
There were a few hiccups, but I think you knew about both. It really didn't bother us or our feelings about the place. The only recommendation we would suggest for future visitors is, a heads up about the roads to the house. We would definitely get an all wheel/ four wheel drive vehicle for this time of year (rainy/low season) and for this location. Maybe people just presume this but we didn't know and it was a challenge as far as the driving conditions. Other than that we enjoyed the place. It was an awsome location and we would definitely stay there again.
Cheers and we hope you have had a nice holiday season.

Fantastic long-term home away from home
My husband and I stayed here for three months (May, June, July) upon first moving to Costa Rica, and what a fantastic start to our journey! The house is exactly as described. We were very impressed when we pulled up to the property and when we first walked in to the house. The property is in great condition and well taken care of. Both the owner and the property manager were super-responsive to any questions or issues that we had and gave us lots of useful advice about the area. The kitchen is well appointed and spacious, and we always had everything that we needed for cooking. If you have a family or a group, there is plenty of space and seating for everyone. The pool is fantastic. We swam in it almost every day! The property itself is great, as it sits up on a bit of a plateau, so you have stunning views of both the valley and the jungle, and we spent most mornings on the upstairs patio enjoying the view while we drank our coffee. You'll hear howler monkeys in the distance almost every single morning, and we saw both howler monkeys and white-faced capuchin a few times in the trees right next to the house! The house is quiet and very private. All in all, an excellent stay. Highly recommend.
I would just say amen to all the other five star reviews on this property.
It's a wonderful house in the middle of a wonderful place. I know the wild charm of Costa Rica is not for everyone, and for that I'm thankful, those of us who love it often wish we could keep it all to ourselves. I get up with the monkeys every morning and spend hours reading and writing, we would swim in the pool afternoon, eat dinner on the balcony, and do it all over again the next day.
Breathe in the rain forest
If your picture of paradise is a five-mile span of mountains and valley from the top of a hill, you will love this house. My wife and I come here every year. Although the house is big enough to accommodate guests in two ensuite wings, the hosts have their own pentouse with huge balcony to luxuriate on. There are many places to curl up by yourself with a book -- a gazebo by the pool, the lower shaded deck, or the upstairs balcony. You see a 360-degree view instead of neighbours from the large hilltop property. Air conditioning is available buyt we find we never need it, thanks to the mountain breezes. Your alarm clock in the morning is the cry of toucans from the nearby trees, or the growl of howler monkeys from the valley below. There is no ocean view but who needs it: The mountain view is ever-changing and much more interesting.
Ojochal, a charming town popular with expats, is a walk away. A favourite of ours is a walk to the Pancito, a nice French bakery, for breakfast. Ojochal has perhaps the finest variety of restaurants per capita in Costa Rica. Some offer pick-up so you can bring them back and relax at home. Several fabulouse beaches are short 10-minute drives away. Go in the early morning and you find yourself alone.
It's easy to fit in here. The people are nice. And Casa de Tropicale has a great landlord who plays straight and honours any commitments. You won't find a better deal in this area -- one of the many reasons folks like us keep coming back.
Now, take a sip of that margarita, let the salt on the rim sweeten your taste buds, finger a fresh-caught shrimp into your mouth, lean back and feel the evening breeze on the balcony cool your body, and watch the dying of the day's light flicker slowly across the mountain range. Why would you want to be anywhere else?
Amazing (from our 9 year old)
We stayed here at the end of June into July. I am hesitant to share our experience with anyone because we do not want it to become spoiled. His house is on the crest of a hill that is surrounded by more mountains. The entire property was private and clean. The property was abundant with flora and fauna. Everyday was a new experience. We were far away from the really busy areas of Costa Rica(WE WERE HAPPY ABOUT THAT). On the other hand, we were close enough to places that we could go on day trip after day trip and only be in the car for an hour or less each way. This place is great for a family with small children. We loved the pool, the upstairs porch/deck, grill, showers (outside and in), proximity to many beaches, the long gravel road leading up to our house (that I ran on everyday) where we saw wildlife every day, food, the friendly children. We traveled here during the World Cup and loved the spirit of the Costa Ricans. We felt very safe. We shifted away from our east coast mentality and enjoyed Pura Vida from the moment we stepped onto this property. Thanks Jerry! We will be back (if you will have us!). Noelle, Steve, Miles & Laila.
Spacious, private and Great Ojochal Location!
My husband and I have travelled extensively through Costa Rica since the early '90's. We discovered Ojochal 4 years ago and have returned every winter to escape the cold in Canada. We always rent on "Finca Maranon" where this house is located due to the beauty of the location and the proximity to the beautiful, practically deserted beaches nearby. This house is also located close to many fabulous restaurants which rival anything I've tried in North America. The house is absolutely gorgeous. There are 3 bedrooms in total-- 2 bedrooms, each with en suite on the ground level--perfect for 2 couples or a family. But the crowning jewel is the newly constructed master suite upstairs with en suite and private, spacious deck overlooking the jungle. The bedroom has huge windows on 3 sides taking in the most stunning mountain and jungle views --not in my wildest dreams could I have asked for a more perfect space to greet the morning or fall into a restful slumber at night. The pool is lovely, and the gazebo, set across the lawn, offers glorious mountain views and privacy away from others, should you need it. On a final note, I am a walker and enjoyed an early morning walk into the village of Ojochal daily. What a beautiful road leading down from the house--ferns dripping down the side embankments, delphinium blue morpho butterflies flitting by and the most amazing birdsong!! It doesn't get closer to paradise than this!!! We will return!!!
A little piece of heaven in the mountains!
My family and I stayed here for one month over the holidays. This house is very spacious and has a great outdoor sitting area where we spent most of our time. The gazebo at the back is nice for view the monkey's (visited us daily in Dec). It got quite a bit warmer in Jan., and we did not see them as much then. The pool was great for cooling off, as well the bedrooms offered A/C. This spot is very private and although not within comfortable walking distance to restaurants it was about a 5 minute drive down. Jenell was a huge help in recommending local beaches and restaurants. She was always available via email if we had any problems. The wifi signal is a bit weak, but sufficient.
The beaches nearby were stunning! Our favorite was Ventanas with the caves and great swimming for the kids. We also loved the restaurant Villa Leonor which offered delicious food and access to the beach with your meal (rather than the park entrance fee). We did our food shopping in Uvita (about 10-15 minute drive), but there was a small mini-super in Ojochal. If you are looking for peace and quite (other than the Toucans and howlers), and an amazing view to wake up to each morning this house is the one! A great value!
