Great summer getaway

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Bell's Cottage July 15th-22nd and had a fantastic time. The house was plenty big enough for all of us. We had 9 people staying for the week and 3 extra people that came up for just a few of the days. We also had our dog.

The kitchen had plenty of stuff to use for making breakfast, lunches and dinner. It was very well equipped. The toaster oven was a little on the old side, but did the job okay.

There were plenty of towels and linens as well.

We loved the location of the house. It was quiet and private and there was hardly any traffic on the road in front of the house.

You do have to walk down o few sets of stairs to reach the dock, but it wasn't anything too bad. We did not discover the ladder for the dock until our last day at the house, so that was a bummer! Make sure you find it right away if you stay!

The dock is narrow, so there is not a lot of room to sit down by the water. That it the only reason I did not give this place 5 stars. It would have been great to have some sandy area or a bigger dock. However, two chairs fit at the end of the dock and the kids did sit along the edge.

A previous review mentioned the smell in the basement. There was a bit of a musty smell, but it wasn't too bad if we kept the dehumidifier running. The beds in the basement are not ideal, but we did find a mattress topper in one of the upstairs bedroom closets that we put on the pull out couch. That helped. We also found a blow up mattress upstairs that was used in place of the twin bed in the basement. The twin mattress was not comfortable at all.

The kids in our group hung out in the basement quite a bit and were not too bothered by the smell. It would be great if a screen door was on the basement door, so it could get some air without letting bugs inside.

We sat on the deck every night and morning. Beautiful views.

The water was clear and clean and surprisingly on the warm side.

We brought kayaks plus there were a few kayaks there to use. We also rented some SUP.

We drove into Traverse City one afternoon. It's a quick drive. We also checked out the sleeping Bear sand dunes.

Overall, it was a great place to stay. We were never 'bored' or wishing we were somewhere else. We would definitely come back!

The first floor is very nice

  • 3 of 5

I'd like to give it a 3.5 but since I just can't give it a 4, then 3 it is. The major issue is offering the lower level--read, "basement"--as a sleeping area. It is extremely musty and mildewy smelling. Anyone with allergies, asthma, or even a cold can't possibly sleep there. Leaving the door and window open didn't help. It needs a dehumidifier running 24/7. The sofa sleeper down there was downright scary. One of our party had brought an inflatable mattress with her, and she opted to sleep on that on the floor upstairs rather than stay down there. She paid the same as the rest of us, and that's not fair. The half-bath was clean and cute, but you don't stay in there very long, right? The downstairs shower had spiders in it. Hard to know if that was part of the shower being in the basement, or a sloppy cleaning crew. We didn't use that shower, so we don't know if they would have come back.

That said, the main floor was quite nice. The three bedrooms were fairly clean (altho one of the twin bedspreads needed washing, and we found a pair of men's undies left behind in one of the drawers, eewwwww. Um, you pay for a cleaning crew???!!) and roomy enough. There's plenty of closet space.

There's plenty of eating space in both the kitchen and the dining area, and both have a lovely view of the lake. The deck off the kitchen is wonderful. The kitchen is satisfactorily equipped. The coffee maker is seriously slow to brew and the toaster oven is on its' last legs, but they did work. We had more than enough pots & pans to make dinners for six, and they even have a blender and a salad-spinner.

It's clear this is a home and it has a welcoming, not-a-plastic-condo feel. Someone appears to be a very accomplished woodworker, and their pieces are part of the furnishings.

If you can comfortably fit into 1 Queen, 1 Double, and 2 Twins, or some of your party don't mind mattresses on the first floor, then Bell's Cottage is a good choice. Just don't plan to sleep in the basement.
