About Laurel Kelly Young
I'm second generation for this cottage. My three boys are all grown and spread across the country. For now I will rent. I am a steward of this property for the next generation--and yes, the water really is that blue.
Laurel Kelly Young purchased this Cabin in 1945
Why Laurel Kelly Young chose Newaygo
My boys have many happy memories of frog hunting, turtle hunting, knee boarding, wake boarding, water skiing, sailing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, sleeping under the stars in the boat, bonfires, smores, roasted hot dogs, throwing the ball for the dog, bike riding, ice cream cones at Fergusons, floating down the Muskegon River, Going to the High Rollaway, Decorated boat parade on the 4th of July. Boat races and trophies to win! Lakefest in early august.
What makes this Cabin unique
Because the water is so clear it is a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.

This log cabin cottage is cozy and comfortable with an expansive Eastern view of the sunrise on the lake from up on the hill or out on the nice long walk out dock.
Beautiful Lake and Close to GR
We enjoyed our stay at this cottage especially the lake and close proximity to Grand Rapids. However, the interior of the cottage is very outdated. The furniture could be updated and more comfortable, but the interior is clean. The utility room and garage are very cluttered with stuff and the landscaping appears to have been ignored. We feel the pictures do not reflect the outdatedness or the ignored exterior. Though our stay was enjoyable and our weather was perfect allowing us to be outside all the time, we probably will not rent this property again.
I try to be clear that this is a vintage cottage. This is the cottage your grandparents had when you were a kid and you have fond memories of sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows, fishing off the dock, canoeing and looking for turtles in the swamp, trying to catch the bullfrogs that croak at night, the tree frogs and cicadas singing, the loons on the lake, the owls hooting and the whippoorwills calling. Playing board games on rainy days. Making the best-tasting hand-crank ice cream. Oh, and swimming. It's not a crises when your kids come inside with wet bathing suits and sandy feet. I allow dogs because I love dogs and we always had dogs up there. My dad built the place with his own two hands (and the help of his younger brothers) before he went off to the Korean conflict. I, too, agree that his workshop needs work. I don't know what to say about the landscaping. I have a weekly lawn service come in and mow, etc. I agree that if you are looking for dry wall, carpet, central air, high-end furniture, and granite counter tops, then this is not the rental for you. This rental is more about providing your children and grandchildren with memories of a time gone by.
Cozy Cottage Great stay.
We really enjoyed our stay, The grandkids put the Kayaks and paddle boat to good uses. The dock was great to park our Bass Boat. The Lake is the cleanest Lake, by far.
Looking forward to another stay. The only down, was the grill ran out of propane and we had to run into Newaygo for a refill. "no Biggy"
Picturesque & perfectly situated place to stay
We had a great week at Laurel's cottage. The lake is gorgeous and also shallow enough for children to paddle in. We did have some issues finding certain things, like cutlery, but Laurel was quick to answer any questions (and yes, the cutlery was actually there). The cabin is very comfortable; the bedrooms are as described and also have built-in robes and drawers. The living room is spacious and the kitchen has all the equipment you could possibly need. The only issue was the area (cupboard) under the sink: it was very messy and not a pretty sight - it looks liker the cleaners overlook(ed) this area.
Overall, though, the cabin is very good value-for-money and in a prime location - we would certainly stay again and would even pay more money were the bathroom (or at least the shower) modernised.
Thanks for a great stay, Laurel!
Great place for a young family!
This cabin on Bills Lake was the perfect fit for our daughter, son in law, and three young grandsons. The cabin is very small, and quite rustic, but it accommodated all of our needs. It has a big picture window in the living room with a beautiful view through some tall trees of the lake. Our grandsons were thrilled with their bunk beds, complete with individual reading lights. The other two rooms had comfortable queen beds. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. Most of our time was spent outdoors. There is a lot of seating, three picnic tables, and a large fire pit. Bills Lake is clean, clear, warm, and has lots of shallow water suitable for young children. Our grandsons loved going out in the rowboat and kayaks that were provided. We were grateful to the owner, Laurel, for allowing our grand puppy Lucy to come. She had a ball. She is quite the swimmer, and delighted in swimming after the boys when they were out on the boats. This rental property offers a great value, and we would recommend it for a fun family lake vacation.
Great place to stay
We had an enjoyable week at this cottage. The cottage is well equipped with everything that Laurel has on the website. The lake is very nice, shallow for kids. Laurel did a great job answering any questions we had and making our stay very enjoyable. Queen beds were very comfortable.
