A perfect vacation cottage on the bay

  • 5 of 5

This has been a great vacation week in Lubec. Mudge's Bluff allowed us to make daily excursions to lighthouses, parks, and hiking trails. We filled our cameras with pictures of the breathtaking beauty of the DownEast portion of Maine and the Campobello Island portion of Canada. We loved the access to 4 lighthouses and to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. At the end of the day, or during "rest days" we were refreshed in the fresh, clean and renovated spaces of the house/cottage.

The large kitchen and living room windows treat tenants to panoramic views of Johnson's Bay. The Bay offers a visual of the dramatic tide shifts, birds, boats, and rocky terrain of Maine. But they are all trumped by the beautiful sunsets.

The house was neat and clean inside and we felt welcomed immediately. Decorated in a modern styling with whimsical pops of color and artwork, the cottage offers a split level floor plan (perfect for parents upstairs, kids downstairs or a pair of vacationing couples). The upstairs dining/living area is open and adaptable to family table games, reading, eating, or just hanging out together. Another smaller living area is available for a separate gathering downstairs. We loved the flexibility!

Jody (the property manager) suggested Mudge's Bluff as an alternative to another area rental to match the size of our party better. (Great advice!) She was a great help and addressed our needs/requests quickly and cheerfully. She was a true assistant and total asset to our family in this whole vacation experience. Thanks!

We will easily recommend Mudge's Bluff to anyone asking us about rentals in this area. We found it to be a 5* experience and stay in Lubec.

Wonderful stay in Lubec!

  • 5 of 5

Mudge’s Bluff is an ideal place to stay when vacationing in Lubec, close to the bridge to Campobello Island, West and East Quoddy Lighthouses, and a short drive to Cutler. The interior is quite spacious and recently remodeled. It worked very well for us (two couples staying for a week in July), with the two bedroom/two full bathroom set-up on two floors with a comfortable living room and large dining room on the main level (The lower level is also expansive with walk-out patio from the master bedroom, several beds in the main space, and a television seating area.) We quickly learned that Uncle Kippy’s, the restaurant right across the street, was a great option for dinner or ice cream with a walk-up window for take-out back to Mudge’s Bluff for gorgeous sunset bay views. (It is also amazing to witness, from the bay windows in the kitchen and living room, the remarkable tide shifts in Johnson’s Bay!) We left at the end of the week with a special place in our heart for Lubec and northern Maine and know where to stay upon our return.

A true gem in cosy Lubec!

  • 4 of 5

As Jody might warn you: wait till you get in the house to fully appreciate how awesome it is.

My family and I travel quite often, and Mudge’s Bluff is by far, one of the nicest cottages we’ve rented.

The view from both up and downstairs is breathtaking; no matter the weather you’ll be able to enjoy an amazing view from in or outside.

The cottage is quite spacious and well equipped, from outdoor furniture to everything you could need in a kitchen, and plenty of towels in the two huge bathrooms, everything has been well thought and you will quickly feel like at home.

The lay out allow for big parties to still enjoy some privacy, or hang out in the family room, dining room cosy living room or the patio.

If you stay there, do not miss a visit to Monica’s, her chocolates are delicious, Cohill is also a good restaurant, but avoid the Inn and Restaurant on the Wharf’s breakfast, way too expensive for what you get.

Lubec is home to the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, at the easternmost point of land in the contiguous U.S. The Down East area showcases nature at her finest. Whales, eagles, osprey, moose, and bear inhabit the region. During migration season, whales pass close enough to be seen from shore! Local whale and puffin tours provide the opportunity to observe nature up close and personal. Beach roses, wild iris, and beach peas line the pristine shoreline. The area is host to three state parks, two international parks, a national wildlife refuge, and several nature preserves, all of which offer a variety of well maintained hiking trails. The area is rich in history—the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought in nearby Machiasport. Maine's own 'Cannery Row' lined the waterfronts of Lubec and Eastport with sardine canning factories. You'll find it all here—rich history, spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife, and friendly people. You won't find pollution, crowds, or traffic jams.
