5BR Hilltop wine country home w pool and spectacular views near Alba and Barolo

Property Details

Updated: Oct 23, 2016
Perfect home base for exploring NW Italy or just hanging by the pool w wine

The Alba International White Truffle Festival is coming soon (Oct 8 - Nov 27) and the entire region is abuzz with anticipation. As far as "enogastronomic" and road cycling destinations go, this area cannot be beat at this time of year. All of the local restaurants are offering seasonal specials, many of them with locally sourced truffles, both black and white. As a base from which to explore the area, I have a restored but still rustic country home on a hilltop surrounded by vineyards of the Langhe Roero and Asti areas, with views to the alps. Ideal for families and groups up to 12 people. Five bedrooms, 4+ baths, large family room / kitchen with fireplace. Outdoor cooking, dining and entertaining areas with barbecue and pizza oven, swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, fruit trees, herb garden, 4 car carport, solar panels. A real home, not a hotel-style rental property. Short drive to Alba, Barolo, Barbaresco, Canale, Asti. When not rented this remains my home, so care and respect are necessary ingredients. Additional pictures available on request.

Custom tours, catering services, bicycle or Vespa rentals, wine tastings and much more can be organized on request.

About the Owner

I have been a resident in Piedmont since 1988 and have always enjoyed sharing the beauty of this place with friends and visitors. Food and wine have become my passions and also a great way to meet new people. I have a 'short list' of favorite local wine producers and restaurants but I still feel like I am a beginner, a kid in a candy shop. I am happy to make introductions and suggestions.

My three girls are now grown up have left the nest for far and wide. I want to keep the house, but don't need to live in it full time. It is a place that deserves to be shared and loved. This house has been home for all of us and has grown with us, restored and improved bit by bit over these 18 years (with many more improvement projects in the hopper). We are travelers and the house reflects that, with lots of objects and details that are very personal (and sometimes quirky) and tell stories. There are lots of books to read and browse, including guide books of the area. I can be around during rentals or not, depending on the preference of renters. I enjoy meeting people and am happy to share my knowledge of and appreciation for this area. I am also happy to participate in local tours, shopping, cooking, wine tasting, singing, ping pong games and other good times. I hope that guests will contribute ideas, thoughts, reflections, advice and suggestions for improvement in benefit for future guests.

The name "il mestolo", literally a ladle, is intended to suggest the stirring, mixing and tasting of various ingredients put together. We have had seminars, parties, reunions, retreats, concerts - of all kinds and have enjoyed them all. Every opportunity to learn is a gift. Every new person we meet presents an opportunity to learn. I look forward to meeting you.

Fabulous location and great hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a stay in the wine country that would allow us to both visit some of the "should not be missed" sites like Turino and the lakes and still allow a more leisurely approach to the wine towns of Roero and the Langhe; this was the venue! You will need a car and a willingness to do some driving but we felt the location was ideal. Mart was a great host; he shared his views on both the region and the wines willingly but encouraged us to set our own agenda. His home is rustic and beautiful. Sitting out by the pool and watching the sun go down over the vineyards with a glass of Nebbiolo in hand is a wonderful experience. We are already dying to go back!

Owner's Response: It was an absolute pleasure to have you all here! The peak of harvest time is unfortunately not the best time for visits with the local winemakers, but the season is indeed beautiful, the markets are lively and the wine is always great. I am glad that you enjoyed it and I look forward to staying in touch.

Outstanding property, as described and more

  • 5 of 5

This large, ambling farmhouse far exceeded our expectations as a site for our family gathering. Views from this property are superb, fine pool, large, well-stocked kitchen, country roads for long walks, San Damiano has good shopping, a fine bike shop for rentals (Cicli Giorgio), and at least a couple of decent restaurants (ask Mart for tips). Further afield is Barolo and Barbaresco, with Roero right next door. This is a very personal rental experience. The family was helpful at every turn. The Pizza oven is first rate, big enough for 2-3 pizzas at once, given some skill with the peel. Plenty of firewood available (firewood gathering seems to be an important part of the local culture). I would love to visit again, having the chance to sample what this area (and house) has to offer.

Great location, atop a hill with views in all directions. A fabulous pool, lots of space, and a host who definitely "goes the extra mile" for his guests. Thanks, Mart, for a wonderful stay. Roger, Carol, Melissa, Yann, Xavier, Emilie, and Alexandre.

Great place & area

  • 4 of 5

We rented the house for two weeks for a family of 10. As Mart states, expect a real home and not a resort type cottage. For us it was great, the vistas, playing around with the pizza oven, midnight swims. Recommend. The area is, in our opinion, underrated. It's scenic, pure (instead of tourist trampled) and an abundance of places to eat and visit. And I wouldn't know where to begin to describe the discoveries of great wineries.

Owner's Response: Dear Guests - thanks for your comments. It was a pleasure meeting you all and I hope to see you again next year! Thanks for keeping the basil and mint trimmed back. They are still thriving, as are the cherry tomatos. The scorching heat wave while you were here has finally ended. A good rain last night and the garden is happy. Enjoy the rest of the summer. Hope to see you again next year.

Beautiful house in the most charming location!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have spent the last four summers in this wonderful house with the most beautiful view you could ever imagine –the best summers of our lives!

Situated on the top of a hillside you feel the tranquility and find your inner peace. The church bells in the small borgatas nearby ring once in a while – they can’t seem to agree what time it is, which is very characteristic for atmosphere there.. time is of no importance.

With the children in the huge pool, the smell from the pizza oven in outdoor kitchen, and the local wine in your glass, life doesn’t get much better!

The house is charming and spacious and embraces its rural history and architecture.

You feel away from everything but at the same time San Damiano with its charming medieval center is only 5 minutes away in car. Here you find various small cafes and shops plus outdoor markets twice a week.

A 20 minute drive takes you to Asti or Alba and Barolo for shopping, wine and good restaurants.-it’s all just around the corner!

Owner's Response: Stine - You summed it up better than I ever could, thanks. It's nice to know that the family will have lasting memories of time spent here at il mestolo and that these memories will bring joy. Big dog Baloo misses you all (and Bimba) and sends his regards. I hope that your plans will bring you back this way soon. All the best. Mart

Piece of Paradise in Piemonte!!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful house holds the memories of some of our very, best vacations ever! Super place for adults and kids alike! The pool is perfect size for swimming (and learning to swim) - The house is nearly magic, with rooms matching any taste, beautiful old details and art work from around the world. The view from the pool-side, the friendliness of inhabitants in San Damiano (the absolutely fantastic "you-have-to-go-at-least-once-every-day" Italian ice-cream place!) and the endless wineyards, not to mention the Wine. Lots of lots of destinations for day-trips (shopping, hiking, dipping, wine tasting etc etc). Its a have to see place! Can only recommend!

Owner's Response: Thora - Thanks so much for the generous words. The house misses you all! I hope to see you back here soon. There will be a few changes for this season: some painting and cleaning, and the garden has matured a bit more. I expect a somewhat reduced apricot harvest this year, but they might be ripe earlier in the season. The cherries are coming ripe now. Early July should be a good time for figs and maybe plums. I also planted a new peach tree which will bear fruit this year as well as a 'micro vegetable plot' with cherry tomatoes, pepperoncini and strawberries (the red plot). The lavender by the pool is lush and the grass lawns are cool. The mint patch is providing plenty for both mint teas (brewed with sunlight instead of boiling water - it comes out so smooth) and for cooking. The basil should be plentiful by mid-June and the other herbs are all doing well. Please give my best to the extended family!

From the Owner

When you see it you will know. When I first saw it in 1997 it was just a country house on a hill, in need of a lot of work, but what a location!! (What were those 3 important things? Location, location and location?) Now I think the house and garden area are nearly up to the level of the views. Some of the house is still "in the rough", but that's one of the fun things about being here - you can imagine the next set of improvements. Most people who have spent time here use words like 'magical' to describe it. Very good energy. There are multiple 'outdoor rooms', different gathering places for different times of the day or for different sub-groups of your party. In the summer the pool is an obvious point of convergence but the indoor spaces are also special and accommodating. The spaces lend themselves to groups and sharing.

Ideal location to use as a base for groups or multi-family vacations. On site entertainment as well as day trips, mountains, sea - everything is reachable and then you can come 'home' and relax. The area is rich in great food and wine experiences. The vineyards of the Langhe/Roero/Monferrato area were recently awarded UNESCO Cultural Heritage status. White truffles (Alba hosts the International White Truffle Fair each year in October), artisinal cheeses (nearby Bra hosts "Cheese", a semi-annual event), mushrooms in late summer - early winter, farm fresh vegetables at daily markets - the list is infinite. No wonder that the "Slow Food" movement was started here (in Bra) and that the University of Gastronomic Sciences is nearby (Pollenzo). Piedmont (Piemonte) is the hidden gem of Italy, relatively undiscovered by the mass tourism industry but very rich in natural, cultural, historic sites and events. Summer festivals in the various towns showcase local specialties and music. Great music festivals are nearby (Monforte Jazz in July, "Collisioni" in the town of Barolo, also in July). Torino, less than 1 hour away, is a city worth spending some time in with a great music scene and night life as well as museums, history, shopping, chocolate ...
