Overview

About the property

A winter haven for snowboarders, skiers, hikers and river rats.

Unplug ! After spending a few days here we discovered that it truly was as if one “dropped off the face of the earth”. Returning after a weekend spent simply watching the river, we quickly discovered time here changes if you allow yourself to sit with the flow of the Skykomish passing through you. A cabin retreat like this needed a special name. Many of the place names in the Pacific Northwest are a mishmash of French, English, and the ‘locals’. Drawing upon the spoken word of these diverse speakers, a language that came to be known as “Chinook Jargon” was developed so the European trappers could talk with the indigenous peoples who lived here. “Sky ko mish (for example) translates to “Up River People”. The words ‘Deh Cho’ meant “Much Moving Water”. And that phrase came to refer to a ‘crazy’ person.as it was felt that such a person had fallen into a wild river and was ‘lost to us”. Given that we came to know that when you visit the little cabin that sits next to the river you will come to feel that you have literally ‘fallen off the face of the world’, Deh Cho would be the perfect fit for us. But it is more than that . . . the cabin surrounded by tall pines and giant ferns . . . tucked away and secluded . . . feels like a little slice of heaven on earth. The locals didn’t really have a concept of ‘heaven’ but in Chinook Jargon “Saghalie” literally translates as “above”. So adding the word Saghalie to Deh Cho . . . the name given to us is . . . “You have fallen off the face of the earth and into Paradise”. We are proud to share this with you and it is our hope that you will discover "saghalie deh cho" if you spend a few days here. Relaxing from the day to day worries of your hectic life. Rejuvenating your spirit. Retreating to a place where it is quiet enough to hear the voice that speaks inside you. And leaving you . . . Renewed.

The cabin is a one bedroom 400 square foot cedar cabin surrounded by about 400 square feet of decking. A small kitchen, shower, toilet, wood stove, hot tub and river access make it a comfortable spot to put your feet up. In the winter Mt Stevens gives snowboarders and skiers downhill slopes just a hollar up the road. Nearby hiking trails turn into snowshoe and cross country sky routes to water falls, and mountain lakes. The nearby town of Index hosts premiere white water river rafting and vertical rock climbs. Down Hiway 2 in Gold Bar, you will find restaurants, grocers, antique stores and gold panning. We would be remiss not to mention, this is Sasquatch country. Knock on a tree and see if you can get a knock back.

About Liam Cole and Heidi Heimarck

We live in nearby Everett, Washington. Both are writers who purchased the cabin as a retreat where anyone can connect with their individual muse. We both manage Artspace Everett Lofts, residental housing for artists located above The Schack Arts Center in the downtown core. Everett is located a little under an hour away. Close enough for us to be available to you should you need anything not provided there for you.

Liam Cole and Heidi Heimarck purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Liam Cole and Heidi Heimarck chose Central Cascade Mountains

In the late nineties, we were looking for a place where we might escape the go go go life-pace of Seattle, a retreat where time slows and the creative muse can sit with you. This spot on a curve of the south fork of the Skykomish river was presented to us and we took it. We found the serenity of the place, the abundance of ferns and cedars, the flow of the river and the occasional eagle flyby to be a welcome relief and retreat from the everyday.

What makes this cabin unique

Remote yet close, intimate but expansive, a break away from the barrage of the internet and technology but connected with the heart of nature without sacrificing comfort. The cabin is a Pan Abode cedar, which can be an aromatic delight. Birds of all stripes flock to the feeder on the deck. Even a weekend with the sound of rain falling on the roof is as relaxing as a day in the sun in the hammock.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A perfect relaxing escape from the city. Sitting on the deck and watch the river flow - perfection. Puppy enjoyed all the new sights and smells as well We actually caught him watching the river! Can't wait to come back!!

Peaceful location, gorgeous view of the river-

  • 5 of 5

We had a tranquil and relaxing visit. The appliances and the hot tub were all clean and in good working condition. The cabin was nice and cozy for 2 people and it would be perfect for a solo traveler seeking some solitude.

Super relaxing stay!

  • 5 of 5

Loved our time at your place! Great location on the river, was a little worried when we saw other homes so close but didn't see or hear anyone the whole time and the second you get in the house you feel like you're miles away from anyone. Hot tub was perfect. Great communication and check in instructions. Loved having a pet friendly place to stay and appreciated the gates on the deck to keep them in! Thanks for sharing your place!

Beautiful, Peaceful, and Totally Worth it!

  • 5 of 5

We were celebrating our 4th anniversary here and it was the best choice we could've made. It was peaceful and beautifully decorated. Everything was as pictured and more. Walking down to the river from the back deck was a wonderful experience. Walking down to Canyon Falls was also a big part of our adventure. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will be back for more peace and quiet from the everyday hustle/bustle of the city. Thanks so much for sharing this place with us!

Most relaxing place ever.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed Tuesday night thru Thursday night August 8-10th. Tuesday and Wednesday we didn't see any people. If you want fancy this isn't your place. If you want the basics with a huge awesome deck overlooking the river and the most relaxing off the beaten path place to get away from it all this is the place to be. On that great deck is a grill and a hot tub to relax to the sounds of the river and the birds. There is a huge bird feeder that you can watch the Blue Jays eat from right there. This place is all about getting away and doing nothing. Nice little kitchen and the bed is super comfortable. The owners are the best and will give you ideas of things to do around the area or you can just sit and watch the river go by. Everyone needs to experience this place at least once. We will be coming back to stay when there is snow.

Perfect!!

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the best Washington cabins that we have stayed in!! Perfect size for two people to unwind and reconnect after a long work week. Just being a short drive up Hwy 2 and located on the river you feel hours from any city. Defiantly on the list of cabins to return too, next time in the winter!! (30 minutes from Stevens Pass and waterfall is pretty cool!)
