A rustic Cedar retreat from the stresses of the world

Unplug ! After spending a few days here we discovered that it truly was as if one “dropped off the face of the earth”. Returning after a weekend spent simply watching the river, we quickly discovered time here changes if you allow yourself to sit with the flow of the Skykomish passing through you. A cabin retreat like this needed a special name. Many of the place names in the Pacific Northwest are a mishmash of French, English, and the ‘locals’. Drawing upon the spoken word of these diverse speakers, a language that came to be known as “Chinook Jargon” was developed so the European trappers could talk with the indigenous peoples who lived here. “Sky ko mish (for example) translates to “Up River People”. The words ‘Deh Cho’ meant “Much Moving Water”. And that phrase came to refer to a ‘crazy’ it was felt that such a person had fallen into a wild river and was ‘lost to us”. Given that we came to know that when you visit the little cabin that sits next to the river you will come to feel that you have literally ‘fallen off the face of the world’, Deh Cho would be the perfect fit for us. But it is more than that . . . the cabin surrounded by tall pines and giant ferns . . . tucked away and secluded . . . feels like a little slice of heaven on earth. The locals didn’t really have a concept of ‘heaven’ but in Chinook Jargon “Saghalie” literally translates as “above”. So adding the word Saghalie to Deh Cho . . . the name given to us is . . . “You have fallen off the face of the earth and into Paradise”. We are proud to share this with you and it is our hope that you will discover "saghalie deh cho" if you spend a few days here. Relaxing from the day to day worries of your hectic life. Rejuvenating your spirit. Retreating to a place where it is quiet enough to hear the voice that speaks inside you. And leaving you . . . Renewed.

The cabin is a one bedroom 400 square foot cedar cabin surrounded by about 400 square feet of decking. A small kitchen, shower, toilet, wood stove, hot tub and river access make it a comfortable spot to put your feet up. Nearby hiking trails, water falls, and mountain lakes are within reach. The nearby town of Index hosts premiere white water river rafting and vertical rock climbs. Just down the road in Gold Bar you will find restaurants, grocers, antique stores and gold panning. In the winter Mt Stevens gives snow boarders and skiers downhill slopes. Would be remiss not to mention, this is Sasquatch country. Knock on a tree and see if you can get a knock back.

Super great place to spend some time

  • 5 of 5

This river cabin is simply lovely. It's comfortable and warm and tastefully decorated. The bed is comfy and the views are unbeatable. Birds and chipmunks are your friends and there's a hammock under the trees for napping. Mornings in the hot tub with mimosas and a strong cup of french press was a favorite. Thank you for sharing your home. We had a wonderful time.

Cute cabin on the river

This is a nice little cabin right on the river. The hot tub was great. We enjoyed watching the birds and chipmunk that hung around the deck.

Cosy cabin with amazing views!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is compact—ideal for two—and cosy with the fireplace providing fantastic atmosphere on chilly mornings and nights. The view from the deck is absolutely stunning: the river running by and trees stretching up into the mountains. And if it's cold or even a bit rainy, the hot tub is an ideal spot to appreciate it all. Definitely recommended!

Great view, did not expect to have to drive our trash back with us

  • 3 of 5

It started off as a 5 star review. We loved the cabin and the gorgeous view. The hot-tub was great and overall the deck is amazing. Then we took off 1 star for not having trash pick up. I understand it's a remote location, but wish there was more notice about this -- we would not have chosen the place if we knew this. With a 5 month old and a dog, it was not fun driving 2+ hours back to Seattle with dirty diapers, beer bottles, and banana peels. By the time we got home, it lost another star.

By all means, I recommend this place IF you are prepared to drive back with your trash. We just weren't prepare for such an ending to our relaxing long weekend, and sadly that's what we will remember most about our stay - the stinky ride home.

Owner's Response: So sorry that you didn't understand the ins and outs of the cabin. We always send along an extensive FAQ prior to coming out and the policy regarding taking what you bring . . . out . . . is covered in that email. And yup - the fact that just like hiking and camping in the woods, you have to take a bit of responsibility for clean up. That said, there is always an exception to every 'rule'. For example we had a guest fly in from Texas, rent a car, and then head back to the airport. Given that we were more than happy to provide him with the extra hospitality as it would have obviously been difficult for him to find a dumpster. So it really comes down to ... communication. Had we known before you left - that it would have been an imposition - we would have worked something out. So for future guests . . . we provide both email and text for you to make any special requests known.

Hard to leave!

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect place to spend a few quiet days before school starts! It is so incredibly relaxing, amazing views, cozy accomodations and really everything you need to recharge. We hope to make visiting here a yearly event. It was very difficult to leave. Highly recommended for those seeking nature, quiet and comfort!

Cozy cabin perfect for 2 and so happy we could bring our dogs

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful and relaxing stay. This place had everything we wanted. We had a hot tub, fire place, hammocks, our companion pups and a river right in our back yard. The cabin was cozy and the cedar wood smells great. We hiked many of the beautiful surrounding trails and highly recommend hiking to Dorothy lake. We can't wait to visit again, maybe when the river isn't so low and we can float and swim. 5 stars!!!

From the Owner

In the late nineties, we were looking for a place where we might escape the go go go life-pace of Seattle, a retreat where time slows and the creative muse can sit with you. This spot on a curve of the south fork of the Skykomish river was presented to us and we took it.

From the Owner

Remote yet close, intimate but expansive, a break away from the barrage of the internet and technology but connected with the heart of nature without sacrificing comfort. The cabin is a Pan Abode cedar, which can be an aromatic delight.
