About the property

A winter haven for snowboarders, skiers, hikers, river rats - Anyone actually.

Unplug ! After spending a few days here we discovered that it truly was as if one “dropped off the face of the earth”.

Returning after a weekend spent simply watching the river, we quickly discovered time here changes if you allow yourself to sit with the flow of the Skykomish passing through you. A cabin retreat like this needed a special name. Many of the place names in the Pacific Northwest are a mishmash of French, English, and the ‘locals’. Drawing upon the spoken word of these diverse speakers, a language that came to be known as “Chinook Jargon” was developed so the European trappers could talk with the indigenous peoples who lived here. “Sky ko mish (for example) translates to “Up River People”. The words ‘Deh Cho’ meant “Much Moving Water”. And that phrase came to refer to a ‘crazy’ person, as it was felt that such a person had fallen into a wild river and was ‘lost to us”.

Given that we came to know that when you visit the little cabin that sits next to the river you will come to feel that you have literally ‘fallen off the face of the world’, Deh Cho would be the perfect fit for us. But it is more than that . . . the cabin surrounded by tall pines and giant ferns . . . tucked away and secluded . . . feels like a little slice of heaven on earth. The locals didn’t really have a concept of ‘heaven’ but in Chinook Jargon “Saghalie” literally translates as “above”. So adding the word 'Saghalie' to 'Deh Cho' . . . the name given to us translates as: . . . “You have fallen off the face of the earth and into Paradise”.

We are proud to share this with you and it is our hope that you will discover "saghalie deh cho" if you spend a few days here. Relaxing from the day to day worries of your hectic life. Rejuvenating your spirit. Retreating to a place where it is quiet enough to hear the voice that speaks inside you. And leaving you . . . Renewed.

The cabin is a one bedroom 400 square foot cedar cabin surrounded by about 400 square feet of decking. A small kitchen, shower, toilet, wood stove, hot tub and river access make it a comfortable spot to put your feet up. In the winter Mt Stevens gives snowboarders and skiers downhill slopes just a holler up the road. Nearby hiking trails turn into snowshoe and cross country ski routes to waterfalls, and mountain lakes. The nearby town of Index hosts premiere whitewater river rafting and vertical rock climbs. Down Highway 2 in Gold Bar, you will find restaurants, grocers, antique stores and gold panning. We would be remiss not to mention, this is Sasquatch country. Knock on a tree and see if you can get a knock back.

Please note our rates are based on a minimum two-night stay - double occupancy. If you have a special need please contact us and we will endeavor to do our best to suit your circumstance.

About Liam Cole and Heidi Heimarck

We live in nearby Everett, Washington. Both are writers who purchased the cabin as a retreat where anyone can connect with their individual muse. We both manage Artspace Everett Lofts, residental housing for artists located above The Schack Arts Center in the downtown core. Everett is located a little under an hour away. Close enough for us to be available to you should you need anything not provided there for you.

Liam Cole and Heidi Heimarck purchased this campground in 2001

Why Liam Cole and Heidi Heimarck chose Index

In the late nineties, we were looking for a place where we might escape the go go go life-pace of Seattle, a retreat where time slows and the creative muse can sit with you. This spot on a curve of the south fork of the Skykomish river was presented to us and we took it. We found the serenity of the place, the abundance of ferns and cedars, the flow of the river and the occasional eagle flyby to be a welcome relief and retreat from the everyday.

What makes this campground unique

Remote yet close, intimate but expansive, a break away from the barrage of the internet and technology but connected with the heart of nature without sacrificing comfort. The cabin is a Pan Abode cedar, which can be an aromatic delight. Birds of all stripes flock to the feeder on the deck. Even a weekend with the sound of rain falling on the roof is as relaxing as a day in the sun in the hammock.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Cozy, comfy cabin

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is totally worth it. Very cozy, right on the river, and lots of nice additional touches by the owners made it very welcoming. Strongly recommend.

Most romantic weekend

  • 5 of 5

Where to even start with our weekend getaway. The cabin is everything you can ask for in location and uniqueness that really give off a lot personality and home like feel. I got the feeling I was staying in a log cabin home which I'd had in my family for years. The scenery is breathtaking. There are large jagged cliffs on the other side of the river which are visible from the cabin, not to mention the river being less than 45 feet from the cabin deck. The hot tub was glorious, especially when you get to share it with a close friend or significant other like I was able to. It was an incredible escape that made me feel like the outside world just didn't exist (other than the incredible scenery).

Liam and Heidi are hands down, the best owners I've ever interacted with when renting a property for a getaway. We had to deal with a freak wind/snow storm that came through and knocked out our power. Luckily they had more than enough accommodations to help with this and were in contact with us throughout the entire time with updates on the surrounding areas that were affected on the outage. We could not have asked for a better experience given the circumstances. We are for sure coming back again!

Just right!

  • 4 of 5

We loved this cabin for its intimacy and "just right" feel... not too rustic, not too fancy! Our hosts were perfect in their communications and meeting our needs! We look forward to a return visit!

Peaceful location, gorgeous view of the river-

  • 5 of 5

We had a tranquil and relaxing visit. The appliances and the hot tub were all clean and in good working condition. The cabin was nice and cozy for 2 people and it would be perfect for a solo traveler seeking some solitude.
