Creek House: A Zen Retreat in the Napa and Sonoma Wine Country

Property Details

Updated: Oct 26, 2016
Welcome to Creek House, a private, serene vacation retreat.

Welcome to Creek House, a private, serene vacation retreat in the Sonoma County hills. Reconnect with what matters most in this secluded, Craftsman-style home. Owner designed and custom-built in 2011 to exacting standards by local contractor and master craftsman John Tagliaferri of St. Helena, California, Creek House is spacious, warm and welcoming. Set in the oxbow of a seasonal creek and surrounded by acres of unspoiled woods, the secluded, tranquil setting is completely private. The house and water-wise landscaping are designed to feel as if they were part of the natural environment. Well-placed windows, clear glass doors and a wrap-around porch bring the outside in. A beautiful drive through wooded hills brings you to world-class wineries, great shopping, and restaurants to please every palate, all just minutes away.

Creek House boasts custom cabinetry and woodwork throughout the house. The stained concrete floors keep the home cool in Summer. Radiant heating embedded in the floors make for warm toes and a cozy temperature in Fall and Winter. There is a wood-burning fireplace for extra cold nights. The 1450 square foot interior is remarkably spacious. The 27 foot pitched enhances the feeling of openness and space. The comfortably furnished wrap around porch adds 1250 square feet of living space. The home has many large windows and glass doors that bring the outside in. Each window frames a different view of the creek, and the surrounding woods filled with oaks and maples with their seasonal change creating beautiful views. The seasonal creek runs November through May on average, depending on rainfall. It is not uncommon to see squirrels, deer, raven, hawks, rabbits, wild turkey, owls, bats, numerous songbirds, and a bobcat or a racoon on occasion.

The well-designed kitchen is equipped with a six-burner gas range, two ovens (one standard, one convection), a built-in microwave, dishwasher and large refrigerator, freezer an ice maker. The cabinets are stocked with dish and glassware, as well as basic cooking ingredients like oils and spices. The usual appliances are available for your use (toaster, coffee press, coffee grinder, and tea kettle for heating water, etc.) The concrete topped island is great for meal prep, serving or even eating. Stools are available as well, and the kitchen opens onto the Great Room, so the cook doesn't have to be away from the rest of the guests.

Creek House was “green engineered” with conservation in mind. A deep well provides delicious water that that is double filtered with potassium (versus salt). Waste water is pumped under pressure 250 feet up the hill and is distributed underground around trees and low growing plants. In the summer months, the trees and extended roof soffits keep the house cool. The floor cools in the summer afternoon, and generally the house interior is 10 - 15 degrees cooler than the courtyard. In winter, the low sun provides direct sunlight by late morning. Ground mounted solar panels hidden on the hill above the house provide electricity.

About the Owner

I designed and built my big little house on this land because it was surrounded by the most beautiful natural landscape and its proximity to the seasonal creek. I like being close to the ground and a feeling of the outside in. I designed a GREEN home, that would have the least impact on the environment, is solar powered, heated with water circulating in polished concrete warmed floors. Living here brings out the best in me everyday, and there is nothing better than sharing the experience with our guests, friends and family.

The Creek House is a wonderful vacation destination. My stay there couldn't have been more perfect. The house and grounds are gorgeously maintained and the accommodations are lovely. The entire experience was exquisitely serene while only 15 minutes from wonderful restaurants and wineries in St. Helena. I will definitely be back.

Everything about this home is inviting and so well thought out. We enjoyed every minute of our 4-night stay. We cancelled three dinner reservations and a brunch reservation just to have more time to spend at the house. We loved the fresh vegetables and eggs, and the well-equipped kitchen, but mostly we just let ourselves "be" in the moment to fully appreciate the tranquil surroundings. I would not hesitate to recommend this property even to the pickiest of travelers. .

Great place! Really relaxing and peaceful. Beautiful setting in the mountain. It was clean and very nicely decorated. Close to Napa and Sonoma and only 90 minutes from San Francisco. We would not hesitate recommending Creek House to others and if we come back to the area, we will be seeing if it is available. Thanks Patricia for being friendly and making your wonderful home available to us.

Retreat Paradise (the best we have ever experienced)

  • 5 of 5

With every attention to detail exceptionally executed, Creekhouse is the most relaxing place we have ever experienced.

From the comfort of the King-Sized bed to the gourmet kitchen, to the fresh supply of eggs provided each day by the 'ladies' (four gorgeous hens), to the incredible the amazingly peaceful energy throughout, this property provides food for the soul and nurture to the spirit.

We were 'warned' by the owner to grab our groceries BEFORE we arrived at the property, because once there, we would likely not want to leave. This was a great piece of insight. The property was so lovely that we remained for our entire Napa stay- no winery tours or restaurants. We did not want to lose a moment of experience at Creekhouse! While the property is within easy driving distance of all Napa has to offer, our car didn't move until it was time to head to the airport.

If you, particularly as a couple, are looking for an experience to replenish your soul, enrapture your spirit, and recharge your 'batteries', I do not know of a finer place.

A Gem of a Place in Northern California Wine Region

  • 5 of 5

As others have commented, the pictures on-line are wonderful, but wait until you actually see it in person. This place is even more beautiful in person. It has everything as advertised and more.

It is a very secluded home set back in a wooded area off the main road. There is a wonderful creek literally along the west side of the house. If you need a tranquil vacation, this is the place. Santa Rosa and St. Helena are equal distance from the house if you activities. The home is equipped with everything you could possibly need. Surrounding the house are wrap around decks and seating areas. There are 4 hens on the premises that do lay eggs every day (they are quite a lot of fun to watch and walk around the huge yard area)

Patricia was wonderful and always available, when needed. We will stay here again in a heart beat.

Lovely Retreat

I had a good stay at this lovely home. It was a nice getaway after a long days work up in Lake County. I enjoyed the peaceful sound of the creek and all the nice little touches that made it a nice Zen like experience. I would definitely recommend to a friend/family member.

Amazing Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Everything about the Creek House was amazing. Patricia was incredibly helpful and easy to get in touch with. The house itself was beautiful and it is apparent a lot of though went into the design. The property is a great size, and it is impossible not to find a favorite spot to relax. The house is secluded, but still pretty close to a lot of fun towns to explore. Given the opportunity, I would stay here on every trip up to Napa Valley!

From the Owner

Listen to what a recent guest had to say: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This unique and charming house is nestled in a canyon near a small creek and is peaceful, quiet, and Zen-fully decorated. The grounds and, especially the backyard, were excellent. Our city-Sheltie saw her first deer and got a much-needed taste of life in the country to great delight. The kitchen was a dream to cook in and the living areas warm and inviting. We enjoyed fresh picked vegetables and herbs from the carefully tended organic garden, making every meal even more special. We enjoyed taking naps in the sleeping nook and on the wrap-around porch to the sounds of the fountains and birds. Finally, the soaking tub made a nice end of day treat. There is an excellent fresh market (Oliver's) about 20 minutes away and the house is convenient to the wine country, although we could barely tear ourselves away from the house. Thank you so much Patricia for sharing your wonderful home with us, every aspect of your cozy house led us to feel at peace. Will definitely be back! July 2015

Another guest wrote: Review #13288933 Relax and unwind ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Breathtaking. Every step we took upon arrival revealed yet one more element to revel in. I am a lover of nature and privacy, and this house offers indoor-outdoor living at its finest. The pictures do not capture the detail that was afforded the design of this home. The covered decking wraps around the house and gives an indoor functionality with a dining table and multiple seating areas, complete with overhead fans and heaters, allowing comfortable outdoor enjoyment in any weather. Past the covered decking are more tables and chairs as well as an outdoor fire pit and a chaise lounge. I cannot begin to chronicle the landscaping which blends into the natural environment. I sat outside on the decking and out on rear yard chaise lounge, listening to - nothing but the wind in the trees and the water fountains gently washing my troubles away. Inside you never really leave the outside. Large windows give a sense of being outdoors, and because the deck is covered, you can open most of the windows all the way without worrying about the elements. You have a view of the beautiful outdoors from just about everywhere in the house. The house itself is something straight out of Sunset Magazine - every detail thoughtfully considered to bring a sense of calm and beauty. The house is spotless, and the heated concrete floors are such a treat! Who knew such a small thing could be so amazing! The downstairs bathroom has a large soaking tub which affords a few of the rear yard. Light a candle and take it all in.Wine tasting is very nearby. For food, we cooked all our dinners, and the kitchen had everything we needed. Chefs will be completely at home here. The upstairs bedroom is in a loft like arrangement which adds to the openness of the house. The upstairs bathroom is large and again, offers those lovely heated floors! With lots of windows so that you never lose touch with the beauty that surrounds you.
