A little more rustic than expected
Location is beautiful and right on Monastery Bay, but for the cost, the place could be upgraded a bit. The unit was clean but the patio has old dirty furniture on it and the walls of the unit are mostly plywood which makes the place a bit dark and gloomy. The curtains are also dated and worn. Felt more like a cabin than a cottage. One bathroom is super tiny and has a gate latch instead of a door handle for closure. For close to $400 a night (and a 5 night minimum) and a $200 cleaning fee, we could have stayed at Carmel Valley Ranch and had a significantly more luxurious experience. The beach is nice, but on a public trail off of hwy 1 so anyone can drive to it. The WiFi is satellite so slower than dial up.
Lovely location but the cottage needs some work
Overall our stay at the cottage was very nice. Lovely location with easy access to the beach. Our only complaint was that inside the cottage a little work is needed and some of the furniture and rugs should be replaced. In the hallway toward the living room and kitchen two floorboards need to be replaced. They are loose and every time you walk over them you can hear them give out a loud yelp. The rugs in the hallways are pretty cheap and dirty and should be replaced. The dishwasher door needs to be tightened and new curtains with sturdy hanging rods would also help. One nice feature is having a washing machine and dryer in one of the bathrooms but there was no soap, which we were happy to provide. But, again, overall we enjoyed our stay.
A very special place in a private setting. We look forward to a return visit.
Sea Otter Cottage Review
The cottage was clean and had private access from the patio to the beach with beautiful views. The common grass area had enough space between the two other cottages.
We were very disappointed to see a note posted in our online agreement and also in large letters in the entry way stating there would be a very substantial charge for any pet hair found on the furniture or beds. We brought our two dogs with us. This note made us feel uncomfortable to the point that we booked a pet friendly hotel in Carmel Valley for the last 3 days of our 7 day visit.
The two bedrooms were of adequate size.I The bedroom we used did not have much drawer space. The 2nd bedroom did not have any night stands.
It was our opinion that the living room and kitchen were smaller than they looked in the pictures, with a short ceiling on the family room side.
The main bathroom was tight with a washer and dryer next to the sink and shower.
The second bathroom has a tiny sink and toilet with barely enough room for one person to turn around. The bathroom situation made it work for three people but we do not see how this rental could accommodate more than three.
There is a fenced in outside dog kennel . We would not reccomend this rental to per owners with pets that are used to living inside with their family.
Thank you for the review. We certainly will address the lack of nightstands in the 2nd bedroom. It is a twin room that usually has a nightstand in the middle of the two beds. When we convert it to a king, the room becomes smaller.
The cottages are small, the size of each is listed, so guests may review prior to booking.
We do have a strict pet policy, we do not allow dogs on the furniture. We understand that our properties are not for all pet owners.
I have visited this area twice in the last 15 years. We stayed once in Carmel and once in the Highlands, but this stay was by far the most relaxing and beautiful. The proximity to Point Lobos, the uncrowded beach access and the mesmerizing sound of the waves provided everything we were looking for - We also enjoyed the historical aspect of the locale and enjoyed learning about Alexander MacMillan Allan’s purchase and development of the property. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A home to live in my memory
Unforgettable! Stunningly beautiful and historic. All amenities thoughtfully provide. Wiid and enormous expanse of beach in front of us, and a lovely yard with wildflowers and gigantic trees. This is the stuff of dreams. Simply first rate!-Barb and Fred Volkmann
