4 Bedroom 1 Bath Has Exceptional Lake View and 5 Minute Walk To Lake Michigan
About James Piers
Jim and Dee Dee have spent the majority of their lives in the Holland and West Michigan area. Dee Dee taught in the Holland Community Schools for many years prior to her recent retirement. Jim has just retired after his 42 years as a professor at Hope College. While their adult children are no longer living in West Michigan, they have spent their young lives in this community and consider the lake and this historic area their roots and visit as often as possible. Through their extensive travel, Jim and Dee Dee have come to realize that this historic resort area is extraordinary and a wonderful little piece of paradise.
James Piers purchased this Cottage in 1984
Why James Piers chose Ottawa Beach
Both Dee Dee and Jim grew up spending many of their summers at the Holland State Park beaches. Each time they entered or left the State Park, they noticed the group of historic cottages perched on the bluff, overlooking Lake Macatawa. Those cottages were part of their childhood memories and experiences. So, it was no surprise that when one of the eight cottages became available, they jumped at the opportunity to acquire it.
What makes this Cottage unique
As you walk into the cottage, you will immediately relax and realize you are now on vacation. The pace has slowed and it is time for sitting on the front porch and beginning that book you have been wanting to read. Or maybe, you want to take a short walk to the beach to soak up the sun's rays, splash in the water, take a stroll, fish on the pier, or simply view, paint or take a picture of the iconic Holland Harbor Lighthouse. You may want to take a bike ride along our bike paths to nearby marinas, the city of Holland, Port Sheldon or even Grand Haven (a 20 mile bike ride away). Maybe a climb up the Mount Pisgah dune steps followed by an ice cream cone at the General Store, a hot dog at Dune Dog's or a hamburger and drink at Ottawa Beach Inn will pique your interest? All of these are within a five minute walk. If you are willing to drive five minutes, the Itty Bitty Bar or DeBoer''s Bakery are also favorites for locals. For you history buffs, imagine being transported back to the 1890's. From your porch, you would have looked over the Holland Harbor, seen a large hotel, Hotel Ottawa, below you. Steamers full of summer guests were filling the Harbor on their way to the Hotel Ottawa and other resort hotels on the bay. Trains of hotel guests also were arriving from Grand Rapids and areas east. Learn more about this resort history by taking a leisurely walk down the newly erected boardwalk in front of the cottage. You will encounter several interpretive kiosks including pictures and text outlining the unique history of this resort community, the Ottawa Hotel, Mt. Pisgah, the Pump House and the State Park. Also take an opportunity during the day and in the evening to walk through the historical cottage association, noting the 1890's cottage architecture and the friendliness and charm of the neighborhood. But however you wish to enjoy the area, you will realize you have found a unique and wonderful spot loaded with history, current activities and relaxation.

The porch and the views enjoyed there were the highlight of our experience.
Quaint charming. Very clean but could use a little paint inside. Perfect location to lake
Lovingly maintained historic cottage with excellent views and location!
Our family had a wonderful stay at this property! It is very well represented in the photos and description. The owner has lovingly restored and maintained the late 1800's charm. Cottage is very clean and basic amenities are provided. Linens, plenty of bath towels, coffee maker, etc. We spent tons of time enjoying the screened front porch with views of the lake and boats. Wonderful! We loved this cottage for its location!!! The General Store is just steps away. So is the boardwalk. We utilized the historic cottage neighborhood walkways to go to the beach. That was a treat! No busy traffic and much fewer people. There were a couple of fawns and deer and some other wildlife that were along the way. If you are interested in history it is worth investigating the interesting background of these cottages and Ottawa beach. Check-in process was easy and the owner was readily available from time of reservation to check-out. We look forward to another stay at this lovely property!
Wonderful sister trip
Very quaint cozy cottage with magnificent views of the harbor! Within walking distance to the beach, general sore and Mt. Pisgah! Jim was an excellent host and very accommodating to our needs! I look forward to coming back again with my four sisters!
Perfect in every way!
Incredible view of Lake Macatawa. Great neighbors.
First Time Holland Renters
This was the first time my family and I decided to rent a cottage in Holland for the week.
The location of the cottage, on the northern bluff overlooking Lake Macatawa and walking distance to Lake Michigan, is very convenient. One can walk to the beach, the General Store, nearby restaurants, and to a boating dock down the road for kayaking or paddle boarding. The bike trail passes in front of the cottage if you want to bike around the area.
The cottage itself is very clean and stocked with almost everything you will need. The decor and look of the 1890's-built house adds to the feel of "going back to a simpler more relaxed time". The view from the screened-in porch is perfect for morning coffee.
Jim (the landlord) is only two doors down and always available if we had any questions or needed anything. I would definitely stay here again and may consider this the start of an annual tradition.
